I think it's because too many of us remember and know what LIVE is and know that its not just Ed.

Guys, I see your point, but frankly I think you need to stop comparing Ed's solo performances to LIVE. All good things come to an end eventually.

If he is going to fill his set with Live songs then this comparison is going to happen.

If you have any respect for Ed, let him find his way. There's a thing like midlife crisis even for the spiritual rocker. With his mind set on something else, he wouldn't have been much of an asset to LIVE in years to come. The band was destined to go past their sell-by-date. Be grateful they burnt out before they faded away...

You don't think Live faded away? Have you paid attention their record ticket sales for the last 10 years?

His current band may not be the best, but Ed is in no position to hire the best players. Yet. The same way you can't start a top football team from scratch, you can't expect this band to sound anything like LIVE just now.

If you said we should stop comparing Ed's solo work and Live then why did you just do the same thing? Also, this music is not that hard. I have performed with local bands who execute music far more intricate than anything Live did, and especially more challenging than Ed's new pop material. Finding good musicians to play this music is incredibly easy.

And despite the allegations of commercialization, maybe Ed is just sick of all the perfectionism of the past. Maybe he's thinking "I have never done anything all by myself. I need to find out if I can cope."

This makes no sense.

Also please allow me an observation of the past. I am no die-hard fan of LIVE, but I have been following them ever since Throwing Copper. Throughout all those years I have always appreciated the outstanding song-writing. Songs that have mostly been written by Eddie K. I always thought this band was nothing without the singer. He is the life and soul of this band. His songs, his vocals and his charisma are all deadly weapons. Now when I learned he was about to go solo, three thoughts were zigzagging through my mind:
a) Oh no! This brilliant band is no more!
b) But he's still there and this could get very exciting.
c) Oops! The other guys have been stripped of a job! How thoughtless of him...

You don't know how Live's songwriting worked. You also don't really know how bands work and write together at all.

Sorry to be so harsh, but I'm no fan of someone new showing up on here and tell us what we need to be doing. That isn't cool!

Everything seems to be in its place.. They sound well. WELL. They do not sound PERFECT. They are fucking SO FLAT. A nice drumline is played like a drumline, not like the instrument can breathe, the way CG does it.

And Nick, not everyone here who dislikes the new versions of the songs is a musician either. Why do you seem so content to be a "general music fan" when you don't have to be? Open your mind! Try some new stuff! That is what music is about and that's why it makes me sad for you that you experience it in record sales and mass marketing instead of passion.

Ultimately, even though I can pick songs apart note by note and tone by tone and then tell you exactly what I like and don't like, you and I are very similar. There are certain things in music that I love, and things I hate, and they are far from being objective. But, being open to hearing new things is what makes music fun! I am a musician first because I love music and I get a lot of my passion from it.

I guess what I'm saying is, you don't have to "play dumb" anymore man. Why lump yourself in so willingly with the lowest common denominator?? You can be more discerning if you want to be, and you can still like whatever else you like too! I listen to a lot of really simple pop music, but that doesn't make it any less appealing!

Even if you hated it all, you listened to some different stuff and not anything that is going to knock anyone's socks off musically, or kill their ear drums with guitar rock.

Dude I think sometimes it goes beyond opinion, Ed's new band are making an absolute farce of the old Live material. If you have 2 chicken parmigianas, one microwaved meal (Ed) and one quality cooked in a restaurant (Live), you COULD say you think the microwave one is just as good and that it's just opinon, but really ... honestly. it's not.

This is actually a very nice example. If you cook with the microwave, the food only SEEMS to be prepaired and it of course is faster, and much easier to cook, than in a restaurant, where you can get the dish and enjoy every second of it.

If you grew up and remember LIVE from 91-99, this new shit is enough to make you vomit. I'm sorry, but this is flat out disgusting. As if the last 10 years have not been bad enough, this is the absolute worst. Too many of you feel that LIVE is and only was limited to Ed. I'm sorry to burst your bubble, but what made those years, and that music so great was that it was an amazing collaboration between 4 passionate, talented musicians, who were also great friends. What made LIVE so great was their stage show, the stage show that overflowed with passion, and you could tell that all 4 band members were on the same wave length and played off of each other. That was lost over the last 10 years, but that is what made the shows and the music so fucking good. This new representation of LIVE's music is complete bullshit, because there is no passion, and this band of replacements isn't on the same wave length. They're just trying to play along to notes that they didn't pour their own blood, sweat, and tears into. You guys make me sick.

I really hope this analogy makes it down on wiki or something as part of LIVE's history - in like 10 years time, I want someone on these boards to be like, 'Hey, remember the chicken parmigianas argument?' and it becomes LIVE folklore

bought tickets for Live 3rd of September in Holland. I couldn't resist the temptation as it's sooo nearby my hometown. Hope the new band is more used to each other after their American tour tho

Hm. You’re right, I don’t know anything about how LIVE functioned, but I know the difference between orchestration, production and song-writing. And I can read liner notes. It is now your exclusive right to enlighten me as to why they wrote the first three albums together and later EK established himself as their main song-writer, because I can only guess.

I may not know enough about the history of LIVE, but to suggest I know nothing about how bands work at all is buncombe. Every outfit works differently. Some work very democratically, others are subject to dictatorship. It all depends on the characters in the game. I have i.e. witnessed in the flesh the writing process of a major pop band, and I definitely know how they work – it’s scary!

To be in a successful band is like any other job. You tire, you retire. Some people can’t do the same thing forever. If Ed wants to do pop, let him do pop. He definitely knows how to write a good song, that's the main reason why I like him. Orchestration is a bonus.

Excuse me, but this is by far the worst argument I have ever been confronted with. But I will pay you the favour and leave this forum as fast as I came. I just wanted the fans of Live to see some videos I filmed at Ed’s gig in Cologne, that’s why I registered in the first place. Just one last thing: I realized from spending a good couple of days on this forum that it is full of bitterness. A lot of energy is going down the drain for nothing. Your favourite band is no more. You can lament over it for another decade! Or you could simply get over it. Whichever way you go is of course entirely up to you.
