It depends on the nature of the project.

For a real raw rock sound the recording is the most important part, and the mixing only serves to balance and enhance clarity in all the instruments, which gives it a more sonic quality.

In most current music the recording doesn't much matter because they are going to completely alter the sound in mixing (which is when you can get autotune, fake drums, etc).

I hope TGF's album is more of the first. smile.gif

Haha, I doubt auto-tune and TGF will ever share a sentence. wink.gif

I'll be preordering a copy as soon as someone tells me where and how. wink.gif Just because I haven't been blown away by the samples doesn't mean jack. I'm still hoping for a real raw rock sound, as you call it, and hell, no matter what it'll be better than 99% of the crap the industry is churning out.

Thanks, OutToDry! That was really interesting.

Would you say mixing is the most important part of the process after the recording? Is that where the sound is really made or broken?

nah the sound is broken in the writing process. Shit covered with gold is still just shit covered in gold.

Sure a good mixed and mastered album with dynamics will be better then turning it all to 11, but shit will be shit.

Haha sorry, I meant that as: Do you want me to tell if they used auto-tune when it comes out? smile.gif

Some people hate knowing that sort of thing. I guess I'm cursed with knowledge, and it makes 95% of contemporary music unlistenable.

And I agree ultimately with OutToDry. If the songs are shit then the album is going to be shit. There are a lot of examples of albums with great writing and shitty recording/mixing/mastering that are still really great. Examples of albums with shitty songs and great production do exist, but they are extremely rare.
