Thanks for your fascinating input. This is actually one of the more interesting threads here. A very good debate is going on and I love reading it.

I just thought that this was a thread for this exact discussion. That's why it was moved from the EK thread. And I thought that others (maybe even just one other) might learn something or be interested in it - if not today, then maybe a month from now when they find it on here. Better yet, I was hoping to open gotigrz's eyes to some new ideas and perspectives.

But OK, if you don't like us having this discussion in a thread, then I'll bail out on it. No problem. It takes too long to write these long posts anyway.

Wait what? No one forces them to click on this thread and no one is stopping anyone from adding their own opinions. When I read that post I laughed. Asking a thread to be closed cause they're bored or it's not to their liking? HAHAHA , some people I tell ya.

and voodoolady, you do NOT speak for me so don't assume that everyone is getting bored. I haven't even added any of my opinions (cause they pretty much have been stated by others) but that doesn't mean I'm not enjoying reading this and I'm sure there are others. Simply don't click on this thread.

Keep going guys.

Sorry it bores you. If you don't like it, don't read it. This thread has been set aside and devoted to a discussion with gotigrz about religion. If you take the time to read my long posts, I think there is a lot of interesting information in there that people just don't know and just don't think about. I have an interest in setting forth information about this subject that I think many people are not aware of because they don't take the time to really look closely. I think that if you really take time to look deeply at the early development of Christianity and the origins of the texts, the whole religion takes on a different meaning. I think too many people blindly follow the limited path that they are taught without independantly thinking about it, challenging it and seeking to understand it with their own intellect and not just be bound by the one, limited perspective they are taught.

Sorry Fish....wasn't really insulting you....just being my normal sarcastic self! smile.gif

I just find the bible....well...boring...

carry on..

Thought this might at least amuse some people (possibly even gotigrz). There's been a bit of a reshuffle at work and I've had to move desk and I've been moved next to Claire the crazy Jesus Lady. Even Gotigrz would have to admit that this woman is just batshit insane. I'd heard about it but never had much to do with her until now. She's like some weird scotish cripple who's left side of her body doesn't quite function right .. but he's got no learning problems or she's not got bellspasy or anything. Possibly a stroke or something.

Anyways, she's insane .. it's been 2 days and already she's praying for my soul. I'd heard you can't take the lord's name in vain around her ... today I sneezed about 6 times in a row and at the end just said "God!" and she flipped the fuck out. Suddenly in the middle of the office she said a prayer for me. She hits herself in the head constantly when she gets frustrated because she believes it is self punishment for not getting things right "in God's eyes". She sings hymns at work. Her desk is just decorated in Christian symbols of all sorts, print outs of bible passages, crucifixes, jesus pictures, two bibles and rosary beads.

She's driving me insane, I dont even dare start any kind of argument with her. Gotigrz is a beer swilling, foul mouthed, devil worshipping heathen compared to this lady.

i don't see what the problem is pokey... shrug.gif

j/k... yeah, she does sound a little wack. but, i hate that THAT is they type of Christian you have to deal with everyday cause i'm sure she has done nothing but turn you even further away.

it is almost impossible for two or more people to talk about this subject and not offend someone. especially when one is a believer and the other not. but, i believe that a Christian should follow the bible. and the bible says to witness to all, but not to argue or push your beliefs on anyone cause i can't save you... only your faith in Christ can. if someone wants to find Christ... they will. if they don't.... they won't.

it's as simple as that.

everyone on this board knows where i stand on the subject. if anyone would like to discuss the subject with me, i would be more than happy to. but, i will no longer argue my point. that does nothing but make people mad and push people away from the others point of view. this does not mean that i will compromise my viewpoint, either. if my viewpoint is offensive to you than we will have to agree to disagree on that matter. now, if you ask me why my viewpoint is such, then we will discuss. i would even ask you the same.

I think most sane people would realise that she is a step outside the stereotype, she is just something else all together.

Okay, this is gold. Any chance of getting an audio recording next time she prays for you. Please?
Maybe you could have sound recorder running on your desktop all day... just in case...

I can try it with my phone, it might be hard as she talks quite softly and the guy on the other side is quite loud, but its worth a shot. She genuinely is insane though. Maybe I could convince her to sing a hymn.

I used to work for Securicor in one of the offices that dealt with their courier service. We had two of the blokes in from head office for a week once. I don't even know why they were there to be honest. Absolute pair of rampant born again Christians who never shut up about it and weaved biblical things into conversations at every opportunity. They used to really creep me out as they'd walk up behind you silently and watch over your shoulder without saying a word. It's unnerving, especially when you're trying to type in invoices for the customers without making a mistake. My finger slipped on one occasion and I said under my breath "Oh Jesus" and hit the backspace button. He leant towards me and whispered in my ear "Please don't take the name of the lord Jesus in vain". This did my head in as he was seriously invading my personal space, his lips being an inch from my ear and all. Without moving my head I whispered back it didn't matter to me as I didn't believe in Jesus. To which he replied "Yes, but he believes in you" and with that he stalked off to freak someone else out. It was one of the most surreal moments of my working life.

ok, replace "God" with "the bible"... is that better?

any book that states facts about the way the earth is and the way it will always be that was written thousands of years ago and the facts it referred to still hold true to this day most have been written by someone greater than you and i could ever imagine.

Nope, not better.

The bible was written by man. It was early man's way of interpreting the world around him. Nothing more. They made up stories to satisfy answers to their burning questions. It's kind of cute, when you think about it.

Think of it this way - we wrote the constitution back when our Country was founded, right? But those were different times with different societal rules. So, we add amendments where we see fit. The same thing should have been done for the bible.

It was and is a book of fiction written thousand of years ago and should never be used as a way to discriminate against others.

Agreed. No book should be used a justification for torturing and killing either.
