Night of Nights is fantastic. It's a gem -- Too bad they pretended like it didn't exist in all concerts post-release. I am glad it made the record, however.

On the SFBM thing, I gotta say that I really did love this song when it first surfaced known only as "Love Shines"

- the album title with added parentheses really did nothing for me (we all knew what the song was about ed you did not have to tell us) and as an example of why I loved it pre-sfbm release and only liked it post sfbm release can be found here where ed just sings 'love shines' in key whereas on SFBM final mix he jumps up to falsetto on every second..."shines" very frustrating.

I know Love Shines is still not "LIVE's Best work" but personally as with a lot of SFBM I found the innocence and joy charming and tried to get behind it but there just seemed to be a falseness about it and an over-production that prevented the earnestness (?) from seeping through.

Show is another good example - potentially a good rock song ruined imho by its production.

Having said all of that I do enjoy 'All I Need' 'Night of Nights' 'WDWGFH' and 'The River' a little bit so i guess there is SFBM appreciation....if I look deeply for it - sad that it caused such friction amongst the boys and us though... victory.gif

Good things to say about SFBM... umm... it's a kind of sweet record in it's own context. Good songs from it are Show, Night of Nights, possibly Sofia and... that's about it from me.

I really enjoyed that old clip of Love Shines but wow, Adam's backup vocals were wretched.

I like:
The River
Love Shines
Mystery
Show
Wings
Sofia
Night of Nights

I think 7 good POP songs on one cd, isn't to bad. But they never be as good as the songs from TC or SS or the best songs from TDTH.....but I like listen to them.

Agreed. It's the only halfway decent song on the album. I have NON and Show on my Ipod. They are the only 2 songs post TDTH that are on it.

I only like Show because I told Ed to put the word nectar in a song and he did thumbsup.gif

Yeah, I think SFBM is a decent enough pop record. But as far as songs that tickle my tastes, I still maintain my previous choices detailed in an earlier post.

Popping around and found an Amazon.com customer's review of Songs From the Toilet. Love the last line.

1.0 out of 5 stars Uninspired, June 21, 2006
By Fred (Chicago, IL USA) - See all my reviews

This review is from: Songs from Black Mountain (Audio CD)
Even the most ardent fans of Live must admit that this is possibly the most lame effort the band has made in their entire career. Every artist/band has missteps in their career, and here it is in all its shining non-glory. The problem, though, is that releasing your most boring album at a time when your popularity is already pretty much in the cellar is career suicide. This is a time when a band should sound refreshed, re-energized and ready to play. Unfortunately, "Songs From Black Mountain" may be an indication that the boys just don't have it anymore. All the songs drone on with mediocrity, a lack of melodic hook and missing the raw energy that we've grown accustomed to hearing on every Live album. It sounds as though they've taken the unreleased studio throwaways from previous albums and lumped them together on this disc. This is truly a shame, as I have loved these guys since the beginning.

If you want a lesson on how to do it right, you need to turn to Pearl Jam. After a couple of mediocre, career-threatening albums, they came roaring back with a a re-invigorated and truly inspired effort. The public loves a comeback, and these guys did it right. They ended up debuting at #1 on iTunes and #2 on the Billboard charts. Their first single shot to #1 on modern rock radio. I was so excited to hear that both Pearl Jam and Live had new releases this year, only to be blown away by one and disappointed by the other.

Someone argued that Ed Kowalczyk's having a daughter may have dragged them down somewhat. Guess what? Lots of rock bands have families and still know how to write great songs. It's not Ed's daughter that is the problem here...it's Ed!

The actual CD design was nice, and I liked the sepia tones on the album cover even if there was a half naked man bathing on it
