I always wonder when people say thigns like this... how do you actually know that? eh.gif

Based on everything I've heard that he played on, it just isn't interesting or creative.

Most competent drummers can play a lot of different beats, fills, etc., but what separates the good drummers from the great is if what they play is interesting and well placed.

Great drummers take the song to new places without taking over the song; John Bonham is perhaps the greatest example of this.

It's difficult to explain in typing, but I've been playing professionaly for about 10 years and have heard and produced a lot of drummers. Most of them are good, but few are truly creative.

He isn't the drummer for my favorite band ever, of course! That's always the greatest drummer in the world! smile.gif

I would assume "music people" have ways to categorizing a drummer's level of talent, even if to most people it "seems" like drummers can be easily swapped out. smile.gif

"Music people" are such jackasses. tongue.gif

One of the things that drew me to Live back in the MJ days (when I was learning to play) was Gracey's unique take on syncopation and how the other instruments would sometimes follow him. To me, Ed's bands version of AoY takes a lot of that away.

Not that I would ever want them to try to emulate the song piece by piece mind you, but it does hurt to hear it become more of a generic pop song.

Watching this made me wish that Ed would have just gone acoustic for awhile. I enjoy his acoustic material, and particularly enjoyed the video of him playing piano. A minimalist Ed K album would have been pretty neat I think.

Interesting, I can barely see the drum kit in that video. Are you sure?

I should've clarified I drew this conclusion from watching the 'Grace/All Over You' video in which you can clearly see the drumkit - and I could not make out any perspex or plexiglass in fron of the kit. I have been wrong before though... hehe.gif

I play the drums myself and from what I have heard of this guy - he's just a contemporary sounding rock drummer and his fills and timing are pretty standard imho. I do love the Gracey, he is a drum hero of mine along with neal pert and Scott Phillips of Alter Bridge

--- I guess the Chad just plays too LOUD for Ed's ears and this new guy is so soft and gentle like a bathrobe from a Dallas hotel room.......... omg.gif

I just watched the All over You video. And the youtube comment (no shit eh) of all had it right. I have heard cover bands do better.

After seeing a couple of more videos a couple of observations:

1. There is indeed no plexiglass. Interesting. Either Ed changed his mind or Gracey just played that much louder.

2. TGF is going to own this band in terms of stage presence. It's not even going to be close. Sean and Kevin both go nuts and well, we know about CT.

3. I think Grace would be a stout pop rock song if it wasn't so clearly trying to hit the Daughtry-esque pop/rock genre.

I'll raise my hand as a fellow drummer! I've been playing for ~14 years now... started right after I heard TC in 1996 and never looked back. smile.gif
