QUOTE(gotigrz @ Mar 22 2010, 11:09 am) *

not sure why that's funny. all i meant was that i'm not too keen on getting through to people that don't feel the way that i do.

but, i think everyone, atheists and believers alike, should read that c s lewis link that ridley provided. it shines an entirely different light on the subject.

I think atheists and believers alike should stop reading and do something to help others around them.

It was funny because you spend most of your time here arguing about Christianity related stuffs. I think everyone associated you with being a pro-Christian debater. So, um, that's why.

problem is that some believers think that helping others means that they need to hear the word of god and see the light and be saved.

and some athiests need to stfu .. god I think one of the worst things I saw not too long ago was some fat neckbeard on youtube who started a video with the words "every time I point out to christians..." and at which point I turned it off. You do get some athiests who go out of their way to have arguments, probably to give themselves some kind of self righteous pat on the back.

But just for the record, I am convinced of God's existence - it's the implications of this for life that I am constantly struggling with.

Sounds like a nice Springer-style concluding thought to me, there sure are. But I just wanna say I don't think gotigrz is one of them. Sure it's got heated at some points but it's a credit to him and everyone in this thread that they've continued to engage in this conversation, and I'm sure he's not the only one to have taken something away from it. Having to think more deeply about why you believe what you believe is always a good thing.

And that's the end of that chapter...

if you followed the link i provided before you'll see how your C.S lewis argument fails, not to mention Martin Luther King Jnr. And that fraud Mother Teresa. Christopher Hitchens has put those arguments in their place.

At the end of the day it really comes down to what works for you and making sure you aren't a fanatic on either side of the spectrum.

edit: in case that first sentence made it sound like i was hating on Martin luther king jnr, i wasnt. He was a true hero way ahead of his time and we owe a lot to his legacy. The point is, christianity had nothing to do with it tongue.gif

Pokey, I think the same can be said for a lot of religious people in general, not just christians. A zealot is a zealot, whatever side they are stood on. And they both thrive on self righteous pats on the back. I personally will only stand my ground rather than instigate an argument on religion. I have every respect for whatever anybody else believes in as long as they don't blather on about why they are right and everybody else is wrong and back it up with 'facts' that fly in the face of common sense and empirical evidence to the contrary that I want to rip them a new one.

Oh I know that, I'm just saying that just because what I believe is closer to the athiest's way of thinking, doesn't mean I don't think a lot of athiests are complete morons.

wambangalang, i followed that link... well, first of all, it's in a british accent, and i'm from the south carolina, usa... so, my ears are hurting. but, his argument holds no more water than any other atheists argument ......because it's the same argument. c s lewis' view of moral law actually takes on the argument of God vs no God in a different perspective.

anyway, one thing i do notice when believers and atheists get in a debate about their beliefs is that believers usually discuss with a calm, rational behavior. and, atheists go in attack mode.... with, personal insults, vulgar language, and just a sense of hostility. i have a theory of why that is, but i'll keep it to myself unless anyone wants to know....

lol the last person to be giving advice about weather to stay or move club is Richo. He's probably only talking from past regrets where as he's forgetting Geelong isnt Richmond. I don't think Jebus is going anywhere. (although if he came to the red and black I wouldnt be complaining tongue.gif ) ... which reminds me, you're gonna kill us on Friday night sad.gif

It might be because you are telling them that they are going to burn in Hell because they don't agree with you. Just a hunch. You may not use "vulgar" language, but that is a far worse attack.

Oh, and I can pull from my own personal experience to disprove what I quoted above and I'm sure many here can as well. However, feel free to make broad generalizations based on what happens at the high school you go to on the buckle of the American Bible belt.

high school???? i'll be 31 in august. and, if i said that i believe you will go to Hell if you don't turn your beliefs to God instead of away from God it is only because that is what God said.... not, me.

your whole life you do things for an end result. if you do this: this happens, if you don't do this: this happens.... rewards and consequences. if there is a God, and if there is a place called Heaven and Hell, and if you will end up in one or the other BASED ON YOUR CHOICES,... don't you think it is only fair that the One who makes the decision on where you will end up should give you fair warning of the consequences of your choices?

the only thing that wouldn't be fair is if there is a Heaven and a Hell for reward or punishment and yet we were never made aware of it.

a parent doesn't punish their child for something they weren't told not to do. a parent will warn their children of the danger and harm and consequences of their child's actions and choices... a good parent, anyway. i believe the same is for God and His children... us.

Nice generalization about atheists based on your own preconceptions and kudos for the ridiculous ethnocentric remarks about British accents - which are a lot nicer to listen to than most.

aahhh... the insightful response i've so been longing for.

and, as for hitchens book putting c s lewis in his place,.... i don't think so.... c s lewis' mere Christianity gives a reasonable response to atheists reason for NOT believing... all you gotta do is read it. and, who else to do such a thing than a former atheists?
