I believe that that was part of the producer fault... or Ed's... but TLA, has a great ear... Green day also work with him and his bro... Green Day's Fault!!! but here we're talking about Jerry Harrison, there's nothing to worrie... lol.gif

The person you and CRH are looking for is the guy who mastered BoP (and Weezer), not the producer or mixer. Overcompression and loss of dynamics can take place in mixing, but with those two albums it is more likely that it came out of the mastering session.

There was a discussion on a Weezer board a few years back about TLA. But the guy is really well known for compressing the hell out of his mixes. Before I had made that post I checked the liner notes for each album, because it made more sense to me that the loss of dynamics occurred during mastering, and it is still likely that they did. However, this article is about TLA and his love for compressors.

I'm still open minded about this though. Weezer's Pinkerton is one of my favorite albums of all time, with tons of feedback and an overall tone that they never repeated and I wish they would/could. That said, TLA did a remix of the song "Pink Triangle" which was amazing.

Chad's reasons for the breakup are BS; a publishing contract dispute that happened half a decade ago finally gets realized. What a croc.

The breakup is great promo. Brings attention to the Ed's solo and TGF which they were planning on doing anyway. They'll break up, take as much time as they want to write new material, and come back saying they have worked things out.

I don't know, if they were going to fabricate something they could have made it a little less ED IS TERRIBLE heavy.

Lets get real Bremag. Chad explained the reasons. You can choose to believe what you want. The fans collective yawn from 2001 on has been well documented. Real die hard fans who followed the music since early 90's may have a different opinion than one who followed them from 1999 on. Not saying that person is you. The fact that we are going to get a Gracey, Dahlheimer & Taylor (with Sean & Kevin on board) vision of where they wanted things to go is exciting to this longtime fan. I have always been very partial to Live's heavier / edgy sound. If I wanted Live to become adult contemporary / sappy, trippy lovey dovey, then I'd to listen to Matchbox20 or Vertical Horizon (remember them)? When I stared hearing Ed's view on every song, I did more than a yawn....!!!

He probably just loves to compress each instrument, if so then he is just like most other mix engineers out there. Modern albums, even in the early 90s, used a ton of compression on each instrument. He compressed the crap out of the instruments on early Live albums, but still retained the dynamics. Compression is generally a good thing since it evens out the dynamics that you don't want.

I'm sure he has changed his mix technique some since then but so much of what he has done has been fantastic that it is hard to imagine him all of a sudden mixing out dynamics in a song. It would be interesting to see his early mixes compared to the later to find out though!

Here is a good NPR article on audio compression in "modern music"

Good article Brian, thanks.

Ah the days of pressing vynil records!!! I used to work for the company which that did this on a daily basis / schedule - and the only place in the US that did. (mid 90's). Now they're all subcontracted to small job shops. I remember we did Live's Secret Samahdi vynil back in the day.

Front page of the news papers in Australia right after the break up were all about Live and their history, even the sports channel halted talk of Football to cover more of Live's break up, thats how great the break up promo was!
