The Gracious Few's sound would not have picked up in 2001. It definitely has a early 80's hair band vibe. The early 2000's were Linkin Park, Limp Biscuit heavy.

Which is exactly why Live released an album with a lot of bad rock/rap on it and subsequently lost many of their fans. They tried to follow the mainstream and look where it got them.

If Live had released an album like this after TDTH they would have at least remained relevant with the fans they had at the time, which weren't nearly as many as Linkin Park/Limp Biscuit level of fan support.

So no, they wouldn't have taken the world by storm but the fan base wouldn't have left either. Seems like it would have been more successful to me.

If Live released a rock album in the vain of Throwing Copper, I agree with you. If Live released an album that sounded like AC/DC light with horrendous vocals, not so much.

There are many old school Live/Candlebox fans who would have really dug an album that reverted back to that old 90's grunge style of music that both bands enjoyed tons of success with. From the samples, that is not what we are getting with The Gracious Few. To me, it is a bit of a bummer.

Get over it. As it stands right now Live is dead. You don't like what you hear from TGF? chances are you won't like the album. And then it's as simple as not listening to it. I don't like anything I heard from da EK so far and haven't gone back to hear any of it again.

You are still lamenting over this whole break, it's easy to see. Stop being so emo and move on.

p.s. 80's hair metal? Sure 70 classic rock but hair metal? come on dude. Ahh nvm I long ago realized your musical knowledge is that of a 9 year old. And spare me the whole music is subjective and the whole it's my opinion stuff. It sure is but it misses the mark.

But you're still A Ok so don't take this as an attack on you, just your musical opinions smile.gif

If Live had kept songs like Vine Street, Don't Wait, Change, etc on TDTH, and released an album like this to follow it up, they'd probably still be very relevant in rock today. Way to go, Ed, you fucker.

At the expense of which tracks on TDTH, might I ask? Genuinley curiuous.

Good to see you round these parts again, not seen a post by you in a while. smile.gif

Totally cool, and you make a lot of good points. My musical knowledge does suck, but I know what I like. Live was and probably always will be my favorite band. The Gracious Few does not resemble Live in any form(from the samples), and it is a bit disappointing to me personally. But I suppose we shall see how it all plays out.

Seriously? The only track that sounds close to AC/DC is Appetite. AC/DC HAS horrendous vocals, making your comment even more a head scratcher.

Live and Candlebox have been my two favorite grunge bands for years and I am fucking pumped after hearing the samples. It is a tantalizing mix of classic rock and grunge. I doubt there is a question whether Candlebox fans will like it as Candlebox has always had more of a classic rock bent than Live. The question is more will Live fans like it.

I think the Live fans who appreciated what CT, CG and PD brought to the band as much as they did Ed's vocals will find a lot to like here.

It will be interesting to see how this does. I've played the samples for several people who don't like either band and they always want to hear more. Not a wide sample base, but the response has been much better than what I expected.

Clearly it would just be a 17 song album. Nothing wrong with that! I was most surprised they took off Deeper. It really fit the vibe of the album, whereas the other tracks didn't.

Were the other songs worthy of being on an album? Hell yeah! That album? Not really. I could easily replace tracks off of V with them though.

let me re-hash this discussion with this track from 2000 summer tour. I was embarrased to hear the contradictory rant on 'fuck with the mainstream' at the beg of IA......and then around this time they were throwing crap into the wall to see if it sticks (ala 'V'). Hearing that was a big wtf? I liked hearing Ed say it but I saw Railo drowning out P/C & C at every show.....something seemed out of kilter from that moment on.

'V' is the only Live record / boot I do not have in my ipod. I simply hate it. It's the biggest sell out, wanna be record. I know they are on record sayin they had fun, but it wasn't well received by the fanbase at all. Deep down I wondered where Live was headed as I know the edgier Live is what made Live great....all the sappier stuff was well........I won't say how I really feel on this topic. Those who have the boots can listen and hear for yourself . Towards the ending years, we hear some edgier flow to the concerts again and I wish it never left. I am glad that Chad, Chad and Pat are charting their own course and listening to their souls. I'll listen to both records but happened to be a little biased towards a certain 'few'.

I think we'll get that coupled with 70's........me thinks this is way better than having only one era or the other.

QUOTE(SJN1279 @ Feb 26 2010, 5:44 am) *

Chad Taylor was credited on Purifier just last year.

As for Kevin Martin having creative lyrics, I can't tell. All I hear is screeching.....

That'd explain why Purifier was actually pretty decent then..

Yeah I can't comment too much on the creativity in the lyrics because with samples like this its hard to judge. I just think his vocal melody and the structure of what he's singing fits Believe 2.0 better than what Ed's did. And I'm guessing that came from Ed having those lyrics pre written, CT having the music pre written and neither one wanting to change for the other so they just slapped words over music without much change in either and it just didn't fit. Interesting note that Fish brought up though .. I do hear Rivertown a little in Believe 1.0.

QUOTE(thefunkyredcaboose @ Feb 26 2010, 8:41 am) *

Vocally, you can even tell Kevin is trying to do different things that he hasn't done before. Obviously he can't change his voice, but his approach seems different on several tracks here. Its hard to ask much more than that from a vocalist. Also keep in mind that he wasn't the sole melody or lyric writer on the album.

I dont think you could expect Kevin to change that much more either, his voice is his voice. Mu gripe isnt so much that he's not doing enough to sound different, but whether I can enjoy his sound at all. I think my answer is yes, in smaller doses.

QUOTE(thefunkyredcaboose @ Feb 26 2010, 12:26 pm) *

Thankyou, thankyou, thankyou ... The fact anyone could describe this as "AC/DC With horrendous vocals" is criminal because Bon Scott/Brian Johnson had/have the worst voices in the entire history of the world. They recently did a 3 gig "home coming" show here and suddenly everyone is a massive AC/DC fan and you cant say a bad word about "Australia's own.." ... god they suck.

I can't get over these samples. The few I was on the fence about I'm now digging and the ones I dug on the first few listens I can't get out of my head.

Other then the drumming, which is definitively Gracey, and Kevin Martin's vocals there's very little in the sound that strikes me as Live or Candlebox. It's got a 70s rock-esque sound, but with a grunge bend, especially with the guitar work in the middle samples. You can hear it in each track how excited everyone was to be on board with this project.

Believe 2.0 is the real highlight, in my opinion. KM's lyrics just fit so much better with the sound then what Ed came up with. If the rest of the track is half as good as the sample then that song could have some legs even on today's fickle (and decidedly rock-less) radio.
