So... if Ed were hocking product on an atheist's platform you wouldn't have nearly the problem with it?

When people get "inspired by Jee-sus" the results are always terrible. It's kinda like saying "I can't think for myself" and I consider it a huge cop out when you are trying to write meaningful music.

Also, Jesus is really overdone... if Ed wrote an album about an inspiration ham & cheese sandwich he had and filled it with a bunch of metaphors about water and male/female relationships I think I would still be excited.

You're describing a caricature that's based off something like the Christian music industry. All that is, in my opinion, is the homogenization of Christianity. Done for the sole purpose of selling product. It's the same principle behind selling Christmas trees or egg nog around Christmas.

But to say that everything that results from someone who is supposedly/allegedly inspired by Jesus is terrible is just a tad short-sighted. C.S. Lewis is considered one of the greater thinkers of the 20th century (atheists on this board can disagree all they want...they can't deny his impact), so I hardly think he was one who didn't think for himself. Doyle Dykes is one of the best finger picking guitarists I've ever heard. Those are just two examples I can think of off the top of my head.

My point? Not everything that is inspired by Christ results in stained glass windows. My other point? Eddie K. is a walking, talking infomercial. He may be inspired by something, but I doubt it's Christ.

Ed has inspired me to slap my hand to my forehead and exclaim "Christ" quite often over the last decade. lol.gif

However on another point, you seem to have your own little caricature of how all us atheists on the board are going on.

Makes me wonder what CT, CG, and PD have been doing to themselves if you've just been slapping your forehead...

Who exactly considers C.S. Lewis to be one of the greatest thinkers of the 20th century? Just because he has sold a ton of books doesn't make him a great religious thinker. He is really just a watered down version of several great theologians, not exactly a trailblazer.

Read some Paul Tillich, Karl Barth, Francis Schaeffer, Rufus Jones, etc. etc. C.S. Lewis couldn't hold a candle to any of those guys.

As for the Live/religion debate, their music has gotten undeniably worse as Ed has become more enthused about Jesus. Take it for what it's worth.

Are you saying he is a great religious thinker or that he thinks C.S. Lewis is a great religious thinker?

C.S. Lewis is a great writer, he is not an influential thinker.

Don't great/influential thinkers have their thoughts written down? How else do you know what they said?

I'm not saying that just because C.S. Lewis had his thoughts written down that he's automatically a great or influential thinker, but you just said that he is a great writer. Why? Because his syntax and punctuation are perfect? I hardly think Lewis is remembered for his syntax and punctuation. cool.gif

You are the one who said he was one of the greatest thinkers of the 20th century, not me.

He is a great writer because he wrote several strong works of fiction that dealt with religious issues. Saying he is a "great thinker" is quite different. I would never say that Stephen King is a great thinker, but he is a great writer.

My complaint stems from the many people who confuse C.S. Lewis with reputable theologians. Part of the reason he comes off as a reputable theologian is that he is a great writer who can dress up shallow thoughts under pleasant, easy to read sentences.

But, don't bother with me, I'm just a stereotypical atheist. innocent.gif

Having read The Lion, The Witch And The Wardrobe, I'm pretty sure a lot of Christian fundamentalists would call C S Lewis a Satan worshipping heathen trying to poison children's minds rather than a great religious thinker.
