Are we really debating one line in a video? Awesome, I love internet forums.

It is clear the clip was edited all to shit, and I don't know why a clearly mis-spoken line made it in there. To find out someone would have to ask the gent that made the video who is not even in the band. I agree with Pokey that the guys were probably just sitting around drinking some beers and talking about what they were doing. Not a thing wrong with that!

None of the guys in the band seem to have the best grasp of the English language, hell there were grammar errors all through both of Chad's statements. I don't really consider it to be a problem, if I could choose between playing rock n roll for a living and understanding grammar I would choose rock n roll too.

I understand what you mean... HOWEVER. it is a saying in the USA.

When someone says "I cant afford it" someone may reply "you can't not afford, to afford it"
Meaning you better find away to afford it because it will cost you more to not afford it than to find away to afford it.

The term is not meant to be stripped down and taken word for word and if it is a double negative or a dangling participle or a noun or a verb or preposition etc.
Its just a term or saying we use in business here in the USA.

For a basic definition. "WE WON'T SUCK, BECAUSE WE CARE TOO MUCH AND HAVE BUSTED OUR ASSES TO MAKE THIS THE RIGHT WAY"

I wont get into how screwed up the American English Language is or how certain slangs were created. That is another story for another time.

I know the phrase, but I still think it was misused in this case. I can understand when someone says they can't afford to go to college or learn to drive and someone say you can't afford not to. But applying it to sucking in your chosen career is nonsensical and made Kevin Martin sound like an idiot.

It did, but not any more so than some of the things CD and CG have written on Twitter and on blogs. See my above post for my opinion on that. smile.gif

Edited: CG updated his status seemingly in response to this argument, but now I'm even more confused.

Again, can't believe we are really debating this???

Nobody in business can afford to suck. Why do something if your going to suck?

It amazes me how people are so hell bent to find something wrong that they want to pick apart one comment of a video blog.

The 5 members of that band are making one hell of an album and have gone out and got some of the best people in the industry to ensure this is a succesful debut.

More importantly they are all good people who actually give a damn and care about the fans.

They are not the type of guys that will try to sell you coffee, but they are the guys that may buy you a cup of coffee or buy you a beer!

QUOTE(The Thrill @ Dec 6 2009, 7:22 am) *

Why was Mental Jewelry, Throwing Copper and Secret Samadhi so successful? That was one team, working as a cohesive unit and for the same cause!

Without a doubt in my mind this album is multi platinum material.
If your a rock fan, this album will be on your all time favorites list.

Nice overall post. It was clearly heartfelt. Just a few points of contention on my end.

The reason that Secret Samahdi went Double Platinum was because it followed Throwing Copper . The album was a huge letdown for the masses. While tt was great that the band worked together, and many fans seem to enjoy the finished product, the album marked the beginning of the end for the band when it came to commercial success and popularity.

Calling The Gracious Few's album multi-platinum material is insane. Very few albums reach that status in the current climate of music and the band is releasing on their own label. Given the circumstances, it is nearly impossible to reach that feat, and it is ridiculous to even raise expecations to that unattainable level.

Also saying that this album will top our all-time list, is just another example of The Gracious Few overhype. I'm sure the album will rock and be pretty damn good at that, but how can you say it is going to be an all time classic four months before its release? I say let the music speak for itself.

I can say that because I have indeed heard it and the music has spoken for itself!
Nobody is overhyping anything. In order to sell anything these days you need to advertise and market. That is all they are doing and there is nothing wrong with advertising or marketing.

It is not an unattainable level. Susan Boyle...a person who sings OPERA music just sold 701,000 albums in the USA alone in her first week. Worldwide she sold over 2 million.
She is not even singing her own songs they are all covers!
Can you tell me why she sold that many albums?

So dont say those numbers are unattainable.

True, but Susan Boyle is something completely different ... she got a push being on a major TV show with amazing amounts of hype ... not self hype either, it was all from other media sources with huge financial backing.

TGF are hyping themselves on facebook/twitter to fans that already exist from their previous bands. They're not being hyped by media, they're not getting on TV shows .. hell I can gaurantee you Susan Boyle's next album will do bugger all as by that time she'll be old news. You can't compare the two and think that TGF could in any way shape or form sell what she has.

He said "we can't afford not to suck." We all know what he meant, but that's not what he said. I was merely commenting that I'm shocked it wasn't edited out.

Further, I wasn't even one of the ones criticizing that yet you chose to quote my post. I have been a huge TGF supporter from the beginning, glad to have you on the board but be careful who you quote and why.

It is incredibly difficult for a fanbase to embrace what is essentially a new lead singer for their band. While I love Kevin's voice and he has always been gracious after C-Box shows, I can understand why those who are not Candlebox fans would be skeptical. It is natural that everything about him will be picked apart until there is actual music for people to buy into. I don't like it either but I can understand it, so just give it time.

See once again, your assuming.....who is to say that their marketing campaign wont include radio & tv appearances? I bet it will! They haven't even begun to market the band yet. All they are doing is updating their personal sites and the band sites to let fans know what is going on etc. Its way too early to have anything official. They are busy in the studio making an album and wouldnt have time to go and do a tv show or radio appearance. It would be counter productive.

As I said before, Chad Taylor is an amazing business man. He will make sure everything is done in a business like fashion. Just because they are on their own label, dont assume they have any limitations as to what they can and will do for marketing.

I don't think any of us doubt that CT is an amazing business man, or that there are limitations on what they can and can't do.

I just don't think many of us give two fucks if this goes platinum or not, we just want it to be good because the last 3 Live albums were disappointing.

Hootie & the Blowfish scored 15+ platinum, the second album 3+

It's hard to follow any album that hits rediculous multi-platinum status with anything that will exceed it or come close it it.

Hitting multi-platinum today is a different environment than it was in the 90's The digital age has changed all that.

I understood this and know what he meant. he also went on to say that chad sent an email and he knew that was an email from a leader and that is where he wanted to be.

thats is a much different tone from live, where Ed was the lead singer and leader.
kevin practically appointend Chad the leader. did anyone else catch that? to me that speaks volumns of charachter. most singers get big egos and it seems he didnt have one in this video or he would have said im the leader.

in reality it is not a new lead singer for our band. its a new band and from what i heard from the blog and clips it does sound different, but ill reserve further until I hear more. Even if we can get 1 full song...PLEASE if someone from the band is on here. JUST 1 SONG....how about with no lyrics or something.
I must say since I am a fan of both bands I am curious / excited and with anticipation for this album.

I also want to see another live album as well. I dont think you can get enough of good music.
the more the better.

and where is patrick. he is too quiet. love how he says his name that was cute rockin.gif

I agree with this statement. I didnt like songs from black mountain at all. and from what I read it appears this was written entirely by ed, even the music, i just cant understand why nobody in the band would have said what is this crap you wrote thats not us and they should have refused to do it then let us be dissapointed. i wonder how many albums that sold, probably not many.

i know i wont go see ed at all. he may sing the live songs but as we all say live isnt the same band without ed. ed isnt live with out the rest of them either.
his sound alone doesnt do it for me.

If I am the only one that buys the album and it totally rocks me thats all I care about. but i would like to see my fav bands do well and go on tour.

if the band is reading this, please come to Toronto sometime soon! i promise i have never bought eds coffee, we have Tim Hortons here its much better!
