Kurt Cobain?
Chris Cornell?

hmmmmz

Kurt's vocals weren't that good technically, but LAYNE STALEY! For fuck's sake, how can you say vocalists weren't essential to success? I'm not the biggest Nirvana fan, but the wide appeal of grunge had a lot to do with the vocalists bleeding their heart, soul and lifeblood down you fucking ears. It didn't always take words as some of Staley's screams spoke more eloquently than words. In case you haven't noticed, in one case the band split because the vocalist was irreplaceable and in the other it's taken about 13 years of hiatus to find a replacement and start recording again.

i find it very hard to fathom being as involved with live as i am now if it weren't for the lyrical content or at least the general "story arc" of the music. So its not really the vocals for me but without ed, it would just have been another kickass 90's rock band but it is his introspection and gravitation towards spirituality that has always kept me on board. Personally that is why i like live, the lead singers voice could have sounded like a drowning cat (and it has) and i probably would have still got something out of a lyric like "the greatest of teachers won't hesitate...". So whether or not kevin martin has a great voice doesnt bother me, will his words make me pull over to the side of the road when it first comes on the radio?

I did not mean the level of the singer's and frontman's technical abilities. The question was about them being essential to success. I doubt that the authorof that message ment vocal abilities.

Listened to the recording of 'Everlasting Love' with orchestra different times now over the weeks. I must say it's a good song! I know it is simple. It is poppy. And you can say Ed totally lost the way in creating rock songs (yes I said it much nicer than Gracey did lol.gif ), but you must give Ed credit for the fact that he keeps prooving that he can write amazing melodies, that all breathe aa certain 'hope'and inspiration' for people (dunno how to put it exactly). And here i'm not talking about the lyrics, but the way he sings them and wrote the music in them.
'Forever' and 'Everlasting Love' are some of the examples of that.

Btw, I dunno how the studio recording Ed talked about will turn out, but I think this could be a really good song to release as a single. Maybe nothing new or special to the radio listener, but I just have a feeling it would do very well and would played a lot! At least in Holland. Then again, everything that Live or Ed has touched in the past, turned into gold in the eyes of Dutch radio stations so maybe that doesn't say a lot tongue.gif . But still!!

Ohh, please don't believe Ed in that! wink.gif He said SFBM was simlar to MJ, and BoP to TC.
But who knows, I won't judge before I've heard it!

EDIT:

I read on his Twitter he will stream some music soon. Can't wait!

Ooooh thats interesting can't wait!

Just been listening to his audio bootleg on eddie k live website gee its pretty obvious his voice has improved out of sight in a live setting the last few months. The first few were a bit ordinary but since he was in oz it is soooo much better! Hopefully this is noticeable in the new album!

And neither did I. Grunge was just as much about the frontmen as any other genre of music as in most cases they were instrumental to writing the lyrics and music that made the bands successful.

I am sensing that my post was largely misunderstood. doh.gif Let me explain:

I said vocalists weren't AS essential. They were essential, but not nearly as much as today.

In the mid-90's songs on the radio had interesting things like guitar solos, non-pop song structures, and bands wrote a lot more of their music together. There was generally a lot more happening in the songs than most popular rock songs today.

What I was implying was that back then there other things carrying popular music besides just vocal melodies. A lot of grunge songs didn't have "hooks" or great melodies, but they were still awesome because the music was interesting. Nearly every popular modern rock song I hear is based solely on the melody and lyrics and nothing else.

Melody, vocals, and lyrics were essential, but not as much as they are today. That's all I was saying.

I downloaded the MP4 but it crashes for me around the 0:43 minute mark. Anyone else have this problem? I'd download it again, but rapidshare won't let me yet.

What are you using to play the video? I use VLC and it plays fine.

I've tried pretty much all the players I have including VLC.
Maybe my download got corrupted somehow. The file's the right size though.
I'll give the download another go.

EDIT:
Downloaded it again and still the same thing. Freezes at 0:40. I guess I'm the only one having problems. Strange, because I usually don't have problems playing anything eh.gif

That worked. Thanks a lot Daniel.
Makes me believe that the one on rapidshare is corrupted and not just my download from there.
Strange that no one else has mentioned the problem, if that's the case though.
