That guy chose terrible bands for supergroups... What about Emerson, Lake, and Palmer, Boston, Electric Light Orchestra and CSNY? I'd also argue that The Gracious Few is far from a Supergroup. People aged 25-40 know who Live is and no one knows who Candlebox is. Some argue with that, but Last.fm is a really good tell for our generation who has name recognition.

Candlebox - 1.3 million listens
Collective Soul 5.4 Million
Live - 8.6 million listens
Bush 9.1 Million
A Perfect Circle - 34.3 Million listens
Guns n' roses 41.2 Million

So... I would never call TGF a supergroup judging by their popularities. Live is about as popular as Bush uhoh.gif

It is a side project. Live will get back together again in time, calm down everyone. TGF is the result of Ed being tyrannical when it comes to making music... I'd say when they get back together we will see a lot more influence from the other members instead of just Ed.

"That guy"?? Damn dude I've only been posting here for 2 years. bomb.gif

Anyway, I forgot Emerson Lake and Palmer, and didn't realize the other groups you named are "super groups." Give me a break. The terminology "super group" just refers to a band formed out of members of other bands, it isn't a judgment on how popular the bands are. Of course, you rip my choices and then include Boston in your list... I mean I love Boston but come on you are splitting hairs when you dismiss Journey but bring up Boston.

Candlebox' low number of listens is a result of the band breaking up for nearly 10 years before getting back together very recently. Candlebox isn't popular at all right now, but they were back in 1993/94 hence why the pairing makes sense. I've never argued that people know who Candlebox is now, merely that most mid-90's music fans in the US that know Live will know who Candlebox is.

I do agree with your last paragraph though, this is clearly a side project as it doesn't seem at all that Candlebox plans on stopping.

So we are back to discussing popularity and sales again. I'm just gonna wait and let the music speak for itself. Don't care at all who is who and who sold how much. Though it is fun reading all these speculations and feeling the anticipation.

I agree whole heartedly as far as TGF is concerned. I couldn't care less if they only sold 5,000 records as long as I'm one of the 5,000. I only wanted to discuss it to support the fact that there are people that enjoy the music of super groups.

Of course if they only sold 5,000 that would really suck for the guys so I hope it does really well!

Sorry, Journey works but I was trying to supplement your list to follow the same point as you. I'm going by the vinyl I have in front of me... it claims "Boston is a new supergroup" so... yeah?

Interesting. I still say the only missteps in my list were forgetting Emerson Lake and Palmer and putting in the Postal Service. I didn't look at any official sales records but I guess I assumed that by the number of my friends that like them they were doing pretty decently.

Not to make things more complex, but you can make an easy case that the Foo Fighters are a super group. There are members from Nirvana, Sunny Day Real Estate, and the drummer came from somewhere. Whenever bands break up a lot of bands end up becoming super groups depending on what is added in.

So, anyway, I think there are enough "super groups" with lasting success and in my opinion good music to dismiss the claim that super groups make inferior music when compared to their original bands.

One thing that isn't being discussed yet is how much the guys are collaborating on lyrics. I kind of expecting Martin to write all the lyrics and melodies but it is really cool that he isn't because we'll get more of the boys from Live in this one! Like others I didn't want this to sound like the music of Live meets the vox and melodies of Candlebox, and it doesn't sound like it is going to.

Meh, I don't think you know what you're talking about. Besides obviously Maynard's voice/singing (even that is different) musically these two bands are nothing alike. Well maybe a little.. they make music. Two complete different styles in a rock/metal/prog genre. Total different ideas in compositions, presentations, and styles. Tool lite would be something like Rishloo and such.
But will agree this was a revolving door and not such a perfect circle as far as members are considered.

I used to like Tool a lot. Quite like some of APC's stuff too. Maybe I should rephrase that as radio friendly Maynard?

So far it's saying bugger all other than Chad Taylor wanting us to hype something on trust.

I just sent the blue mark red. *evil cackle*

I disapprove of it adding 2 points to his total as surely it should now have a minus in front of it seeing as it was 0 before I did it?
