That was on The Tonight Show with Jay Leno. And he didn't say he wrote it last week. I remember he said 'I was in a hotel room writing the lyrics'.. He was just answering a question from Leno and he answered in a way to tell a good story... the way everyone tells stories on those talk shows. If you lost respect for him from that, you're just looking for stuff to rip him apart.

Ah oke, Jay Leno, I saw that one!

I do recall this... whatever he said he did make it seem a lot more recent. The song was about 3 years old at that point and the full band version was slated for TDTH but thrown out because it sounds stupid with full band.

I'd put it at 50/50 if May is the real time. My bet is that he got the music in May and played with it all June until he could fit vocals in it.

I ASKED IF he really said that, and if so then I lost respect. If he didn't then I'm not ripping on him. Do not twist my words.

I don't recall if he gave a specific date, but I do recall him making it seem like it was really recent. I can't find the video online so I can't confirm this, but there was quite a bit of discussion on the boards at that time (not sure which board it would have been or I'd search for the topic, maybe the Illout forums?).

There were quite a few people who felt like Ed was making shit up to capitalize on 9/11, and I never felt too comfortable with it either.

Wasn't Overcome first played during the TC era? I know I've had a bootleg of it for forever but it may not be that old.

Overcome was first played in concert in 1998.

Thanks! I thought that was wrong, I had it on a TC b-sides disc for a long time and I think it warped my memory. Do you remember the Leno interview Dan?

My memory is pretty hazy re: that interview. I can't add much to the discussion except I do remember fans questioning Ed's truthfulness in the interview.

Swami might have a copy of the performance/interview

Right, it was Leno, not Letterman. My bad. And I should have known that since I owned the promo. Sadly, Daniel (and anyone else), I have sold that promo video, so....I can do nothing to retrieve it. I suppose I could ask the buyer if he can put it online for us...

Basically, Ed pretty much stated in plain English that the song was written within the year prior to that night's performance, when in fact it was written prior to July of 1998.

I remember watching this episode the night it aired and remember Ed talking about the song. When he said whatever he said I felt the same way immediately, I was screaming out loud actually "what? that song is atleast two years old, you didnt write that this year!" I remember this because I was thinking of the duet he did with Sheryl Crow for Overcome in either 1999 or 98. Anyway, I was thinking about this later though and thought that maybe he meant he reworked it to where it was just him and the keyboards that year. Even though he made it sound like he just wrote it that could have been what he meant. Its obvious though to us true diehard LIVE fans though about the time period the lyrics were written because it has the same line about women pulling out their hair as We Walk In The Dream has on TDTH. Just my two cents!

Wow! Have I had a rum & coke or two, or is that totally bang-on!?!?! I never picked up the lyrical similarity before. Good catch!!!

For those of you who dismissed WWITD when it came out (as a surprising number did):

"More than these women in the street pullin' out their hair, something more..."
-We Walk in the Dream

"These women in the street, pullin' out their hair; My master's in the yard, giving light to the unaware..."
-Overcome

In fact, even in the lyric booklets, it's "pullin'" and "street" (singular). Damn good sighting. I rank that among the top 10 Live sightings ever. Good job smile.gif
