A good portion of society considers excessive vulgarity to be ignorant. Live does have songs with curses, but if you check out the band's greatest hits album, its not laced with vulgarity. I've never heard Ed curse during an interview. You can saw what you want about the guy's views, but he has more class than that.

I'm not saying that I never use vulgarity in private, but doing so in a public interview makes a person sound ignorant.

I actually see where Nick is coming from. I have no problem with cursing...especially when it comes to music...in fact, it can actually enhance the music sometimes. But when someone feels the need to drop a curse every other word in an interview...I'm not offended, nor do I care...but I agree it makes him look stupid. Dropping a F-bomb every other sentence adds nothing to the interview...it just reminds of an 8th-grader trying to act tough.

I'll take Ed's cheese sessions over interviews like that any day...or over the ignorant people on here that use lines like...

QUOTE
I just can't listen when he sings like a gay ass fucking fairy, which is almost all the time nowadays. Great performer my ass.

That line is pure ignorance...it just makes you sound stupid and takes away from any credible point you were trying to make...but whatever

A good portion also don't. I think it's highly naive to deem someone ignorant because they use what you personally deem to be excessive language.

I'm not sure what the greatest hits album has to do with anything, but I'm pretty familiar with Candlebox' catalogue and I am certain there are only 6 curse words on the whole greatest hits (Cover Me, You, and Happy Pills each have two). That isn't exactly an album that is "laced with vulgarity."

Your opinion on cursing, and mine, are just opinions. The point I am trying to make is that you can't criticize this guy without criticizing Live for the same thing.

I am pretty sure we either watched an entirely different interview, or you are just blowing things way out of proportion.

i think that the boys obviously see something in this guy and that his voice will suit the kind of music they are creating, so why not just trust their judgement and see where its going. Maybe the style of music calls for a cursing, alcoholic washed-out junkie, and if so then great

I actually thought that Kevin Martin was a pretty good performer when I saw him in New Hampshire. He is a lot better than most front men out there.

As for their greatest hits, I wasn't aware that only a few songs contain curses. I actually only listened to the songs I was familar with (You, Cover Me, Far Behind, Change), and half of which contained the f-bomb. I personallly think Cover Me and You didn't need any vulgarity and it actually took away from the songs. My favorite Candlebox tune is Miss You off their latest album. Very emotional lyrics and a great song.

That is where the subjectivity comes in, because I think "fuck" is especially appropriate for those songs. Both songs really capitalize on it by picking up the intensity at that point, and the subject matter is certainly enough to bring about someone saying fuck (You is about a junkie that the narrator is trying to help, and Cover Me is a conversation between a person and God). Both songs really build up to the point where profanity is used, which is something Live rarely did (outside of the bridge of Stage).

There is one Candlebox song that is a bit extreme, but it is on the new album and that album isn't really their best in a lot of ways (though a solid effort after being broken up for so long).

Just to show how different we are, I think Miss You is one of the worst Candlebox songs I've ever heard, it reminds me of how old those guys really are. I like that it is about his Dad but I still find it to be incredibly boring outside of the lyrics. Different strokes, as they say.

Kevin said in NH that it is about his brother in Iraq.

Maybe he dedicated it to his brother, but all 3 times I've seen them play it he has said it was about his Dad who stormed the beaches of Normandy and was also a musician. I think his Dad passed sometime around when Candlebox got back together. The lyrics fit that as well.

I just read the lyrics and you're right. I guess it was dedication at the show.

I have never been a fan of hard rock, I've always been a fan of pop music. Just a difference in taste.

Found this:

Martin delves deeper into his well of human experience with the song, "Miss You," inspired by his late father. "My dad was a World War II vet who died four years ago at age 81," he says. "He would call me every June 6th and tell me another story about how he survived Omaha Beach. That song is about how I got to know my Dad through the war stories he told me."

If you read the beginning of the thread, he says it in an interview.

That's cool, where'd you find that?

I like a lot of pop music as well (Black Lab, Butch Walker, etc.) it just has to have something interesting going for it. I think I would enjoy the song more if it were recorded with just an acoustic and vocals. Its the arrangement that bugs me more than the song. Candlebox has some great ballads though, if you haven't heard Sometimes then you should check it out immediately. It is probably one of Kevin's best songs.
