While I totally agree that his voice as of the past few years has been on the downfall with his love for falsetto that he can't reach (I think he must sound different in his own mind to what we hear), I do think as of just recently he's gotten a bit better. He doesnt do the falsetto as much, even on a few recordings theres times where he's gone to try it, it failed, so he adjusted how he sings the rest of the song and there is such a difference. But I agree, he's never gonna be like he was, I keep harping on about it, but that Rhode Island Uni 1993 bootleg is probably the best I've heard his voice in concert except maybe a select few songs like the MTV supernatural. But to me the rhode island Susquohanna is about as good as it gets from him ... absolute wow. His voice has obviously changed naturally, theres nothing he can do about that, but he what he can do is know his limits, know what he can't do and focus on the things that he still can because he can still turn it on when needs be. Like you say, Zion is a step in the right direction and if we get more of that then his solo album could be a win.

But like I say, the vocalist for the new band will make or break it ... that dude from candlebox (if it is him) hasn't got a great voice ... it sounds whiney, weak and uninteresting .. if their music is going to rock out as hard as they say his voice might just piss all over that. Hopefully if its him he'll sing differently to adjust to this style, hopefully it's just not him at all... but who knows, we have a grand total of probably less than a minute of demo's of this band to go on so it'd be stupid to judge anything at this stage.

I'm excited for both equally I think, I'm one of those fence sitters that Dan was talking about.

Just have to say that I saw Candlebox in Chicago on Saturday and Kevin Martin's vocals were top notch, especially when they covered Zeppelin (yes he can pull off Robert Plant quite well). Like his voice or not, he is a far more aggressive frontman than Ed has been and really brings the rock vocally. Not a hint of falsetto either.

Candlebox is on tour until the middle of the Fall and he said they would be working on a new album. That could mean nothing or it could mean everything, the guys from Live have more than enough going on as well so I imagine Kevin could be doing this side project and Candlebox stuff as well.

Either way, I'm infinitely more excited about the new CT, CG, and Pat band than I am Ed's solo material. SFBM was basically an Ed solo album and god it was awful. Oooh baby let my lovin' ease your pain bomb.gif

I agree with most of what you said man. Except the Kevin Martin thing. while I don't particularly like his voice, I don't hear anything wrong with it neither.

I 100% disagree that his voice sounds weak. To the contrary, I think his voice is pretty fucking strong and agressive. Ed has had to make the adjustments he has because he lost that ability to be agressive with his voice, especially at the lower end of his vocal range. Listening to Martin, I hear a guy who can still be agressive at that lower range. You know, in certain songs, you look for that raspy edge, that ability to cry out a pertinent part of a song in an agressive scream or belt if you will. Ed can't do that anymore.

When I'm looking for a good rock singer, I'm looking along the lines of an old James Hetfield who can still be agressive with his voice in that raunchy rock-metal style. I rather like Martin, I'm going to go give him a listen again.

What are some of the songs you've listened to? That would make it easier to find the songs that don't have the quality you dislike. Vocals are so subjective that I might point to something I think is awesome and you would say it sounds like Matchbox 20.

I don't know that Kevin has as much of the rough quality that he used to, however I do know he doesn't sing in a falsetto or try to sound like a woman while the band behind him rocks the fuck out. While I'm not a vocal expert, he can sing higher than Ed full voice, so his high notes have a lot of power.

I can link you to a few songs but this one has always been one of my favorites and it showcases his voice well. It's called arrow. His voice rocks and the song is pretty fucking good too.

When this guy wants to sing in that raunchy voice, he can with the best of them. I've always liked Candlebox and this guys voice fucking rocks when he sings a rocking tune like this one.

eh thats ok .. better than the songs I've heard by them so far, but still doesn't grab me. Reminds me of a grungier version of something that should have come from the 80s like GNR or something. Still not a massive fan of his voice, just sounds uninteresting or something .. but still, benefit of the doubt, who knows what it'll sound like with the new band, we'll see!

He may not sing like a woman, but I thought he had a very effiminate stage presence. Running around stage with limp wrists is not a good look for any front man. It was just weird to watch in New Hampshire.
