Been gone for awhile, so this is all news to me. I'm glad I made the decision to see the band a few months back. Got to see Top, Gas Hed, etc. for the first time in 20+ shows. Looks now like that might have been my last time.

An observation: the sudden shake-up of the setlist during the last round of shows may have been the band's way of saying goodbye and thank you to their fans. We had been clamoring for so long for some old gems to be played that, perhaps, the band said fuck it, might as well mix things up a bit for the old fans since new ones won't matter much when we are finished. If that's the case, thanks guys -- you went out on a good note (at least for me).

Also: for years, Ed has seemed to be the only guy in the band genuinely concerned about promoting the band. I remember him going on the Late Late Show a few years back and playing LC by himself right after the band had released Awake. That was before "Eddie K. solo" even existed. That's not to say that Ed is the only person who cares about the band...but perhaps it gives a little insight into what has seemed to split him from the rest of the guys. Ed seems to be the hardest worker of the bunch, or at least the guy most anxious to write songs, play shows, promote the band, etc...whereas the rest of the guys seemed to grow more weary of the "business" aspect of things and thus, possibly, more interested in exploring their music outside of the mainstream, unhinged from the "business" part of it, more just for fun and creativity than for money, glamor, and attention.

That being said, I don't think it's fair to blame anybody in the band more than others...the split seems more a product of different visions for the future than a clash of egos or any sort of dislike for each other.

In the end, I think this will be positive for everyone involved. Ed will have a chance to go out and do what he wants (a solo CD and tour, specifically) without feeling like he has to drag an unwilling band with him. The rest of the guys will get a chance to reconnect with their creative sides and rediscover a love for the process of making and playing music that has slipped the last few years (from Chad T's recent comments, it sounds like this is already happening). The fans will get to see both sides branch out a bit and, from the sound of things, will even get to see all members of the band in concert in their new forms.

And, hopefully, somewhere down the line, the guys will decide that playing together as Live was the best thing that ever happened to them, and will come together once again to joyfully play (and maybe even write) music together. If this temporary split is what's necessary for that to happen, then I'm all for it.

Was he promoting the band, or himself? To each his own I guess.

Live Planning to Take Hiatus By: Chad | Source: Alternative Addiction

Sunday, June 28, 2009

Announced via various band members' twitter pages, Live will be taking a two year hiatus to work on other projects. Several of the band members made it very clear that the break was only temporary.

"Live is not breaking up. We're not boyfriends and girlfriends," joked lead singer Ed Kowalczyk from his twitter page. "[We're just] creatively moving around in different spaces...all good."

Kowalczyk is reportedly working on his first solo album, and has already started a webpage at: www.eddieklive.com

Guitarist Chad Taylor reiterated Kowalczyk's comments on the future of the band from his twitter page stating "there is no break up, just some much needed time to explore new dimensions. We won't do touring or an album for at least 2 years. I need some time for the other projects."

Details have not been released on what the other projects might be, but there are rumors that Taylor and some of his other Live band mates will join Kevin Martin of Candlebox to record a record. While nothing on this side project has been confirmed, Taylor sounds very proud of the new material he's working on.

"I cannot begin to express how excited I am over the new music we are creating. Raw, exciting and passionate!" Taylor exclaimed in a recent twitter post.

Live has four remaining tour dates scheduled before their hiatus, two in Ontario on the 16th and 17th of July, followed by back to back shows in Cleveland and Westbury, New York.

I really hope Ed's solo album is as piss poor as his last three albums. If he fucks up Live to the point that they have to basically kick him out, and then goes and writes a good album, I'm going to have a fucking hemorrhage.

I've mentioned several times already that this break-up or hiatus or whatever you'd call it, is the best for them at the moment, for the sake of their individual pursuit of artistic fulfillment.

With that said, I think many of us feel some anger, precisely because we love this band. We would've wanted them to exit in a blaze of glory. Nobody wants it to end this way.

Can't say I can blame anyone who wants to vent on something / someone.

This is most definitely the end of Live. You don't just get back together after having a new singer come in.

Those Straight out of York users need to pull their heads out of their asses and see the truth. STOP LIVING IN DENIAL. IT IS OVER FOR LIVE
