I expected you to rush in and protect your almighty Live. Why do you always base everything on popularity and sales. I don't think you are qualified at ALL to even talk about music.
You act like a 13 year old girl whenever someone says anything negative about Live.

I'm not qualified to speak on the technical side of music at all. I only know what I enjoy and want I do not. Live is obviously working harder on their music and setlists than they have in the past, and I think its a very good thing.

QUOTE(SJN1279 @ Mar 28 2009, 12:22 pm) *

How was the crowd and the venue?

The venue was amazing.. acoustics at HoB are always excellent, but this new one was especially good. The crowd sucked, at least where I was. Either college kids who didn't even know the ones everyone knows at the other shows, or way old farts who couldn't hold their liquor dancing around snapping their fingers pretending to have any idea who LIVE was.

Top was great, Blowin' in the wind was a nice replacement for Walk the Line.. That new Takamine sounds amazing. I'm always happy when they play the Distance. Selling the Drama, All over you, Turn my Head, Run to the Water (wife was happy). Hell they were all great once the first three were over (new ones) and Ed took that fucking scarf off and stopped dancing like he'd done WAY too much exctasy. Wife and I were all WTF at first, but then again all of his new dance moves take a while to grow on us (or they take him a while to do well, not sure which). He brought the bullhorn back from Amsterdam, I could do without it for Lakinis but it's perfect for those lines in White, Discussion.. he even threw in a hard southern accent 'I warned you, I prepared you'.. was funny.

Seriously, after the first three songs were over, it became one of my favorite shows. The guitars were just amazing.. not sure if it was them, or the venue, but it sounded SO good. Every song was a 'guitars UP' mix. I think they have been practicing, as the overall production quality on Hold Me Up was just outstanding. Or I've been listening to the crappy demo for so long I was just easily impressed heh. I was surprised they ended on White, Discussion.. but another show ending with 'Dance with you' might have left a weird feeling.. this setlist was so surprising that I know we'll be anxious to drop a grand on plane tickets and hotel to do it again soon (Texas, maybe?). It's nice not knowing what comes next, or what gem they will pull out of the graveyard.

If you get a chance to catch a show soon, you won't be disappointed.. the boys have been practicing and Hold Me Up is absolutely amazing live.

Ed has sold 20 million albums more than you. I don't think you're qualified to give him advice as a musician.

lol so by that logic any pop diva who has sold more albums than Ed should be giving him advice?

With all due respect, I have to disagree.

Live would never have sold 20 million records with SFBM as a "starter". An experimented musician will tell you songs like "The River", "Love shines" or "Wings" can be written in only an hour of time while just sitting on your bed and playing some random chords with an acoustic guitar.

An experimented singer will tell you Ed really needs to take a few singing courses again (judging by the latest concert bootlegs).

Again, everything I say here is said with all due respect. No offense. But it's what I think.

Really?! I thought Ed sounded great this weekend. I've heard the man sound dreadful over the years, but I felt his voice has been spot on as of late.

Yeah, really : he makes alot of mistakes and he's not the only one.

Listen to the HOB recording of "Top". They played it way too fast!
Ed doesn't even have the time to place his voice during the "you are not the o-o-o-one" parts.

On the other hand, Ed is consistently adding a bunch of useless random notes at the end of each lines during some songs. Listen to the youtube video of "Hold me up" from the first night. Horrible.

I can remember 2 acoustic/solo versions of "Forever" Ed fucked up completely.
The first one popped up on youtube. I think it was the first time he played it live. It sounded like he just discovered it.
The second was only an mp3 and said to be a lullaby version of it. He took it way way way too low for his abilities.

That's the kind of mistakes you wouldn't get if they practised more. Sometimes I don't even feel like they're doing some feedback sessions by listening to themselves.

While I agree with most of what you said, you are way off base on one point. The March 26th recording of Lift me Up is almost perfect from a vocal standpoint. He is off an octave or two on one word the entire song. Where he sings the word "real." Other than that, he is spot on perfect in that tune. I think you need to go back and listen to the master version, then take a listen to that recording again pal.

But yeah, I agree with the rest of what you said. Ed, in my opinion is just trying to get too fancy with his shit. I'd almost call it gay. Whatever it is, he needs to man back up and sing these songs like they were meant to be sung. Sometimes, I'm very VERY embarassed for him.

Not to be picky to my Canadian brother, but an octave (especially two) is a huge interval in music. I think what you're looking for is a semitone or tone.

I haven't heard the recording from the HOB.. would like to. I'm pretty excited that Live is playing such great stuff in this new set.

I thought so too Nick. Well he messed up the lyrics on Blowin in the Wind in AC .....he is human.
I heard him at his worst in Wildwood. He sounded great in NYC, at Starland and HOB. I don't know...maybe some people are waiting for him to walk on water or something. laugh.gif

Here's the link to hear that performance. The audio isn't great but enjoy. You'll see the word I mentioned in there as I referred to octave. Not sure if I made a mistep, but the change in pitch is a high enough frequency I think that it denotes and octave no? You must forgive me, I took vocal lessons a long time ago and it's kinda like going back to school for me, if you know what I mean.

this thread is such a BUZZKILL!! is this where all the football fans come during the off season to monday morning quarterback?

i am still ecstatic that i saw them last week at starland.. they sounded AMAZING.. was ed's voice a little warbly at times? yes.. did it sound unbelievably awesome too!? you betcha!

ed can wear as many scarves as he wants and be off an "octave or two" occasionally sarcasm.gif if they keep bringing that energy back -- i think the new setlist was part of that.. and if that what it takes to get them to play these old favorites we havent heard in eons.. i say, so be it.. i'll take last thursday's starland performances over the past 3 anyday!!
