Although I hate to admit it sometimes, almost every song on V can be on this list. "Transmit Your Love" is absolutely embarrassing: With Live its game seven every single night.

That's just.....oh god.....I think I just threw up in my mouth.

Everybody in now:

"You had to go to Jimmy Buffet wit' yo' dad..."

"Love Shines (A Song For My Daughters About God)" also has to be the worst title Ed has ever come up with.

Nothing wrong with it at all. He's proud of his girls and obviously loves em to death. I think it's cool that he can say to his girls that he made a song just for them.

While I don't care for the title, I think it's completely fucking awesome that he had the balls to do it. Good for him.

Yeah. Worst song title.

The song that makes me cringe beyond cringe is You Are Not Alone. I have listened to that song in its entirety once. And I just can't get past the "So many people die everyday..." somethingsomethingeeelllseee. Yeah. NO.

Also "Where do We go from here?" Is the most common song title ever.

Which is more than I can say. I've been listening to SFBM a lot lately, and it's growing on me (the same way BoP did), but the last 4 songs - Home, All I Need, You Are Not Alone, and Night of Nights- are perhaps the 4 worst songs in Live's catalogue. Yeah, even worse than some of the worst V songs.

Lyric-wise, though, out of those 4.... Home is probably the worst. As Rolling Stone said in their 2-star review:

QUOTE
"Home," the only topical song on the album, is perhaps the most inoffensive anti-war song ever written: It channels a grieving wife actually crying, "Politics aside, what I'd give to have him here tonight."

Night of Nights is one of my favourite songs on SFBM I think. I really want to see Live try and pull it off in concert. YESSS.

If I were Ed's kids (which im not simultaniously 2 little girls) I think when I grew up I'd be embarrassed that this song was for me, along with Home this is just the worst stuff Live has ever done. Infact upon further reflection, most of SFBM is only so bad because it's such a fall from grace rather than just being an album of songs I hate except this one and Home, they're just horrible. The theme and all is good, I understand your sentiments about it being touching he is writing a song for his daughters about god and such ... but what the end result was is trash.

Agree that Deep Enough has lyrics that are largely awful.

Some others:

in a dream i had i was on a stage with queen michael stipe
and elton john bono and springsteen singin hallejuhah, rock and roll is king

My ammunition won't load into my gun

looks like america's dropped her load
she was ready to explode
i could not see her from up here
cuz she was lyin' in the road (I like the melody on this but the last two lines are particularly bad)

Agreed that Home is awful. The above post is slightly harsh on Night of Nights which is possibly the best track on the otherwise awful SFBM.

While I don't think it's great, it's certainly not trash. Having 2 girls myself, I think I'd better understand how his kids might feel. Certainly not embarassed. I think they'd be proud that daddy loved em enough to write a song for them. I think you're very narrow minded in your understanding when it comes to the relationship a father has with his girls. No offense, but I think you have no understanding at all.

I'm with you on how bad SFBM sucks ass, but I think his kids will always cherish this song. Personally, I thought Love Shines was the best song off the album when I first heard it and still think that way. While the lyrics are pretty simple and ear cringing to non parents, anybody who loves their children as much as I do completely understands. I comprehend that song much MUCH differently than you do. Say you understand all you like but until you have children yourself, you'll never come close to understanding the love and the emotions involved. I straight out love this song for what it stands for and think Ed made a great decision in making this song. The song isn't trash at all, sorry.

omg.gif really?

I honestly can't stand it. I give them props for trying something a little different, but to me, it just seems extremely disjointed.

I think I like "Show" the best from SFBM.

maybe people think the song title is stupid for the sub part of it, and maybe it is (much too long), but I agree with Liverocks77 that Love Shines is not that bad. I remember hearing a really crappy live phone recording of LS (the first thing I ever heard of SFBM) and I immediately liked it. It didn't become as cool as I expected it to be when I heard the album, but still, since that time it's still one my favo off SFBM

I can agree with that. I don't have problems with the particular point of the song (though I personally don't like the song itself)... I just think the title is pretty awful. Or rather, the sub-title.... the bluntness of it a little too off-putting. All those critics who dislike Live because they're too 'earnest' and not 'ironic'? This is what they mean.

Still, the line "Think of gentle Jesus" is a lot worse than even the crap that contemporary Christian musicians put out.

Oh I didn't mean embarrassed now .. I'm talking about when they get older. If my Dad had written so many great songs before like Ed has and then the one I get is just .. well THAT .. I dunno, I couldn't help be feel embarrassed. It's a really, really bad song .. like I say the intention is good, but the execution is just painful.
It's not about whether you have children or not ... if I had kids and wanted to write a song for them I would try to actually write a good one, you know.

I hope the kids end up looking to Heaven as the song for them... I would be proud to have that song.

Speaking of Love Shines, I seem to remember an argument on here a while back which arose when one guy said he'd skip the track if his mates were around to hear it. I have to admit that if I was say, driving with mates in the car and Love Shines came on - I'd be reaching for the ipod, even if it meant taking my eyes off the road!
It's not that I'm ashamed of the track - far from it - I get the message loud and clear. But I'd argue there's a time and a place for that sort of thing. It's a personal song and I'd say it's meant to be interacted with on a personal level, rather than in the sort of throw-away conversation you might have in a car with others.

I'd be interested to know what other folk would do in that situation though...stick or skip? wiggle.gif
