It's great that we finally have Live at the Paradiso - Amsterdam, but it got me remembering a bit of proof I (and some others) uncovered back in 2000 about the proposed Live concert album (called Live). Right around June of 2000 we were hearing from the band that a concert album would be released in the fall. A number of fans and collectors, including myself, discovered that music stores were listing the record as having a release date of November 21, 2000. I went one extra step and actually got one of the local music stores to give me a printout of their full Live inventory on file (things they either had in stock or could order in). The printout is here:

IPB Image

Live - Live was such a definite thing that Radioactive had actually gone as far as assigning the barcode and catalog numbers for both the CD and cassette versions, which made sense chronologically speaking.

The CD would have a catalog number of 088 112 360-2 and a barcode of 0 08811 23602 1.

The cassette would have a catalog number of 088 112 360-4 and a barcode of 0 08811 23604 5.

Sadly, as we all know, this release never made it to store shelves. But, it does get me wondering....if Radioactive had this release planned down to a release date and catalog information, I have to assume that the album was essentially complete. Maybe lacking artwork, mixing, mastering and other such things...but likely this project got to the point of test pressings and office copies being made. We may never know, but it's interesting to ponder.

Yeah, Ed mentioned a planned live album during the interviews from the Secret Show in Belgium. He said it might be a collection of different shows, including their older stuff. I'm assuming this eventually evolved into Radiant Sea.

I've never heard this story, but based on 2000, I think it was just replaced by a new edition of TDTH (2 disc, with 4 live recordings). What was the release date of this 'tour edition of TDTH'?

If my memory serves me correctly, the project was abandoned while Live was working on a new studio album which had a higher priority. This turned into "V". During this time there were early plans for a dvd already but as V was not such a commercial success, it was postponed as well. They've always wanted to produce a high-standard concert recording with video but it was just too expensive.

Hrm, I noticed it was going to cost (at that store anyway) $24.98, and I thought perhaps it may have been a planned 2-disc release. But then, it turns out everything there is ridiculously overpriced.

I think that has to do with the type of the release: In Live's case a casesette and compact disc were planned. Don't know what the third leter mean though eh.gif

Nope. The 2LP is just Secret Samadhi spread onto two vinyls. No bonus tracks. Some versions had white vinyl and came with a poster.

Just a wild guess:
Disc (CD)
Record (LP)
Tape (Music cassette)

Thanks for the info. I doubt it was Radiant Sea ... weren't some of those recorded after 2000?

If it was a concert would it be possible to identify the actual show that was recorded with the information you have?

Very hard to do so, if not impossible. The info I have is simply this printout, plus any archived info from GPLOTR when it was up. On June 28, 2000 Chris Whittenhall of Where Fishes Go mentioned this on his site:

I found out that the album LIVE Live is scheduled to be released on November 21, 2000. This date could change, but I doubt that it will because they almost definitely have all the recordings they need for the album, so it's just a matter of production at this point. For those that don't know, the album will be a collection of many different in-concert recordings from over the years. One or two songs may even be from the band's first performance at New York's CBGB's, when they were just starting out. I can't wait.

This album definitely did not turn into Radiant Sea. Radiant Sea was a cheap and ill-planned cash-grab. At the time Live was being prepared, V was not out yet. Radiant Sea was a compilation of FOL gifts from 2000-2004 if I'm not mistaken. Live was due out before ANY of those releases. I'm tempted to believe that some of the tracks may have come from the Brussels sessions of 2000. Sessions I'd kill my own daughter to be present for.

NOTE: Maybe not due before the RELEASE of the 2000 FOL Gift, it was due out after the PRODUCTION of the gift.

A rarity scale for those interested:

Secret Samadhi double white vinyl: Very common. Fetches between $12 - $20

Secret Samadhi double clear vinyl: Uncommon. Fetches between $20 - $50

Secret Samadhi double black vinyl: Extremely rare. Fetches between $100 - $200
