Sharon Stone's ignorant ass remark about karma and China got me thinking about karma, and then about other beliefs and superstitions.

I believe in karma, but I wouldn't apply it the way Stone did.

As a kid I was kinda neurotic and phobic, I had lots of superstitions and rituals associated with them designed to protect me.

Nowadays, its mostly hooey to me - I don't have the insecurity issues compelling me to that kind of imagination and powerlessness. But, with the exception of being an asshole such as Stone, I generally don't judge others for what they believe in, I respect people for having beliefs.

What's your reality in terms of this superstitious type stuff - do share it might be interesting.

I'm not Superstitious in any way at all. I believe in what I see and what can be proved in repeatable experiments.

Saying you respect others for having beliefs is so PC it makes me sick... I cannot respect people for having some beliefs. Some believe that they need to bomb buildings for their beliefs and some believe they need their babies to go through an exorcism if they get sick.

I really think it is time we stopped accepting religious beliefs the way we do. If I met someone who insisted that the Earth did not exist before 1953, I would have to ridicule and argue with that person instead of respecting them. Why do we hear this chick talk about Karma and not automatically dismiss her as a delusional idiot? Actually, I think a good amount of people still did lol...

I said with the exception of being an asshole. I could add the exception of being a twisted fuck, such as the scenarios you described, but that wasn't what I was thinking about at all - so maybe I'm guilty of being narrow in opening this discussion. The most elaborate I was thinking was people having weird fixations. Like black cats crossing a path, broken mirrors, ladders, whatever. No one in their right mind condones or supports people believing in murder and mayhem. The context I was using the term beliefs was not such, but I used a piss poor & drastic example. My bad

Not really, you didn't do anything, I was just in a funky mood apparently. nervous.gif

I still don't believe in knocking on wood, black cats, ladders, mirrors, or 4 leaf clovers. I will however admit that my day is better when started with a big bowl of lucky charms tongue.gif

I'm not really superstitious at all, to be honest. I wouldn't knock others for it though, it can be interesting in a rather quirky way.

I am not superstitious at all. I own a black cat. smile.gif I think it's crazy living life like that. I used to work with a woman who was so superstitious. If someone whistled she would freak out because it meant that you were whistling your money out the door and since we were at work, it wasn't good. She wouldn't even put her hand bag on the floor because of something that had to do with money. My handbag is on the floor in work every single day and I'm paying my bills just fine. nod.gif I just don't get it.

I guess it would be crazy for me to believe that things happen for a reason? heynow.gif I do believe that. innocent.gif

Tina, the black cat proves how idiotic superstitions are. In England, black cats are considered lucky. In the USA they are considered unlucky. Who's right? And if you are an American in England and a black cat crosses your path, is that lucky or unlucky?

I agree. This is the second black cat I've owned. I've had one for 15 years. I've had a combination of good luck and bad luck in all that time. I would definately not blame my bad luck on my cat!! no.gif

I'd blame it on gas prices.

people escape into superstition because they cannot deal with reality.

True -- good insight. It's very common in a lot of psychiatric disorders.

Superstition - the old name for Obsessive Compulsive Disorder. lol.gif

Eeeee - it's just like here in England a few years ago when the rebranded Marathon bars and called them Snickers.

So, I said I wasn't superstitious. I still believe that I'm not but supposed if you bury a statue of St. Joseph upside down, outside of your house, it will help your house sell. My house has been up for sale for almost 6 months and it's pretty much driving me crazy because I want to get out of here. I broke down and buried a statue today. sad.gif If the house sells, I still don't think it will make me a believer but I figured it's worth a shot to try it out. I guess we'll see... innocent.gif

Apropos of mention tonite, there is a lot of superstition among hockey fans (sports fans altogether, no doubt). Its well known that many players adhere to certain ones too, particularly during playoffs. Some people are damn serious about it - different things they believe will jinx or bless the outcome. The Wings are mighty blessed innocent.gif
