If you want the best seats for this show you'll have to join artsquest, which costs 79 dollars. Tickets go on sale to Artquest members on May 19th and the general public May 23rd. Just a heads up!

Anyone know who is closing this show? Hopefully Live. I saw them here a long time ago on the V tour...the lawn is like a million miles from the stage....

Im definitely going. i think im in VIP 5....last time I went it was like 2001 and was on the lawn. you couldnt even really hear because the stage was so far...

Also, I called the musik fest office and they said they weren't sure who was closing the show....I am assuming it is live, because they have closed every show on this mini tour so far....but i will be majorly disappointed if it ends up being CS closing...

The crowd by me was pretty tame in Row NN, but I moved closer to the front towards during Lightning Crashes and the crowd was way better. Beauty of Gray was a nice surprise and White Discussion was off the charts. Ed finally mentioned the CD/DVD coming out in October! Good time to be a fan.

Setlist(band was only supposed to play a hour with no encore but the crowd demanded White, Discussion....it was pretty cool)

1. All Over You
2. Waitress
3. The River
4. The Distance
5. The Dolphins Cry
6. They Stood Up For Love
7. Selling the Drama
8. Walk the Line
9. Turn My Head
10. Beauty of Gray
11. Wings
12. I Alone
13. Heaven
14. Lakini's Juice
15. Lightning Crashes

Encore
16. White, Discussion

This was a good show. I was back in the second set of seats but during CS we moved up to the first section to the right side along the fence (about 15 rows from the stage) and it was hopping up there. The crowd was into it and the band was great! I've never been to Musikfest but it was a cool experience having the whole town shutdown and turned into a street fesival with music, food, and beer. I'm looking forward to seeing what acts they get for next year. Ed said that as long as they keep asking they'll keep playing so hopefully they'll be back again next year.

Musikfest Review: Collective Soul, Live take care of business
By Mark Wogenrich | Of The Morning Call
August 3, 2008

Ed Roland of Collective Soul (left) and Ed Kowalczyk of Live perform Saturday night at Musikfest's RiverPlace. (Emily Robson/Morning Call photos / August 3, 2008)

The concert rules, as established by Homer Simpson at a Bachman-Turner Overdrive show eight years ago, dictate the following: "No talking, no new crap. Taking Care of Business. Now!"

So inviolable are these rules, they should be engraved on every tour bus and tattooed to the small of every groupie's back. We're not interested in the time you drove through the Badlands, nor do we care about the electric lute you got in Amsterdam. Taking Care of Business. Now!

In that spirit, it's a pleasure to present two working bands that understand the rules. Collective Soul and Live played RiverPlace Stage at Musikfest on Saturday night with a keen sense of the fundamentals. They kept the playlists tight, gave their audiences the sing-along hits they craved and dispensed with the yap-yap. Even better, both hit some high marks (with Live reaching a bit further).

The boys from "S--- Towne" (also known as York) have grown up since their pain-centric album Mental Jewelry broke loose in 1991. Live played a good number of its most angst-ridden, agitated songs from the 1990s ("The Beauty of Gray," "Selling the Drama," "I Alone") but none seemed to be a musical exorcism anymore. Lead singer Ed Kowalczyk even smiled often: Who knew he had such nice teeth?

Live opened its 16-song show with a relaxed version of "All Over You" that just seemed more sprightly than before. "The River," the best-known song from the 2006 album Songs from Black Mountain, set up a version of "The Dolphin's Cry" that sizzled but never felt clenched.

Live's whole set went that way. "Selling the Drama," the anthem of 1994's Throwing Copper, felt much less melodramatic -- almost intimate even -- yet maintained the rumble it had 14 years ago. Kowalczyk gave "Turn My Head," a loving, lullaby feel and looked almost gleeful singing "Wings," another song from the most recent album.

The highlight, though, was an unexpected cover of Johnny Cash's "I Walk the Line." Live seems to revere this classic, giving it an eerie, melancholy feel that sounded like a cannonshot. Just a terrific song.

Kowalczyk really has toned down the scary faces, bulging veins and tai chi dance moves that comprised his video youth. Perhaps it was fatherhood. At any rate, letting go of some of that pain suits the band well.

Collective Soul, meanwhile, played professional rock band for 45 minutes: entertaining and solid but without Live's personality. The band knocked out radio hit after radio hit ("Heavy," "December," "Shine," "Gel") while sneaking in a couple songs from the 2007 album Afterwords.

It also indulged in a few moments of cliched rockery (out-of-place AC/DC guitar riffs, playing yourself offstage), but that was OK. Both bands took care of business, and both played by the rules.
