both Like I Do and Life Marches on were played a good 6 months before BOP came out, but only a couple of times each. The version of Like I Do was a little different, a lot more raw and simple sounding.

before BoP came out, or before it was recorded ??
Because in the first case it isn't very rare: we knew at least 5 songs from SFBM before the album came out, because they played them a lot on concerts. But playing them before they worked on them in the studio is a different story

Before it was recorded I believe ... I mean if it was recorded I don't know why they would play different version of the songs (like I say Like I Do was a lot more simple and Life Marches On had a little different guitar work which I then believe they went and changed a bit in the studio). But who really can tell, maybe ALL the songs from SFBM had been worked on before they even went into the studio .. im sure most bands don't actually write the songs in the studio .. they gotta pay for that studio time so they wouldn't waste it writing songs, they're most likely going to go into the studio with all the songs already written .. it's up to them which ones (if any) they decide to test run at gigs before the album is released/recorded.

The studio version of Like I Do was completely finished and ready to put on the album in January 2003. On February 13, 2003, Ed said the song was recorded "a few months earlier," so probably in October or November 2002, a minimum of six months prior to its release. I don't have the setlists going back that far anymore, but I am almost positive that Like I Do was not played at any shows until early 2003, and when it was, it was the same arrangement that it is now minus all the bullshit effects. Life Marches On and Run Away were the first songs we heard from BOP.

The SFBM songs debuted in concert on August 6, 2005. I had full studio recordings of those songs in June 2005, and they were not that new at the time. It's amazing how long SFBM got delayed. So yeah, when they played them in concert, the songs were more than done.

I don't think any of the BOP songs were played before they were recorded. Life Marches On may be the one exception. They had the songs for V through SFBM pretty much worked out before they got to the studio, but that was not necessarily the case for earlier albums, especially TDTH. Early demos from that album reveal that those songs were initially recorded often in entirely different versions than they appeared on the album. Sun was hardly the same song when it was first recorded -- my how it was neutered. It was probably one of Live's greatest works originally.
But, I digress: I'm pretty sure that no new songs have been formally recorded yet, so if any are played at the upcoming shows, then we'll know they are testing stuff out.

Dont forget though - SFBM was delayed by about 6 months for you guys in the states. I think us Aussies and Euros were able to get SFBM in the November.

I'd be very surprised if there wasnt at least a couple of newies in the upcoming concerts

I have to ask, do you have the original version of Sun you are referring to (before it was neutered)? If so I would love to hear it. Would it be possible to get it from you?

Sun had the potential to be a great song.

you mean the very early (demo) album leaks?

Cause the first time someone was holding an official SFBM album was early april, in Holland, and other European countries followed soon after that, but no way it was november no.gif

there is a Sun - Loop version, and a lill different version on PTTSTS. I think Ex must mean one of those 2 ?

That's not the way I read it, I think he's talking about a totally different version of the song that rocks way more.

I have the original version and it is not the loop version. I'm not sure what PTTSTS is, but I doubt it's that either since I would describe this version as being a lot different from the album version. As far as giving it out, it will get out soon I hope. At least a handful of people here have it. I've asked these people to not release it for the time being, though, since I am using it as a trade piece in a deal to get more very rare tracks.

The very early demo leaks were originally from me and got out about four months after I obtained them thanks to a retard fellow fan (mets). At the time, I believe only Sofia and Show leaked, maybe Mystery too, but the entire album was available. It was finished and ready to go a minimum of 20 months before it was released in the U.S. and 14 months overseas.

It actually rocks way less. It's slower paced in the choruses, very little electric guitar is used and there is a good 2:40 of almost pure acoustic instrumentals before the first chorus appears.

QUOTE(Existentialist @ Feb 27 2008, 2:42 pm) *

It's my understanding that V was already recorded before they played any of its songs in concerts, so I think the last time was indeed before TDTH. However, TDTH was also the last album to be written and recorded with all the band members actually in the studio at the same time, and I've heard the upcoming album will be a return to that method. So perhaps they will go back to testing out material before it's recorded also.

Deep Enough was played regularly in the fall of 2000. A full year before the release.

And it had already been recorded then.
