Do you not think that that's a valid response? I'll download this next album, and if I like it I'll buy it but I'm certainly not going to go to the store to purchase it blindly. If it's crap I certainly won't be following the band any more- they've already used up all their chances in my book, and it's purely for sentimental reasons that I still follow them at all.

I didn't buy SFBM either..

On ArtistDirect.com, V and Songs from Black Mountain are higher rated than TDTH, BOP, with Secret Samahdi being the lowest rated of the band's catalogue. An album's quality is always subjective.

Unfortunately I am with Alex on this one. Fans of live would look up and look into buying their new records if they felt their existing and new material was actually worth purchasing. And it seems as though most fans share similar sentiment as Alex regarding previous albums. It is very evident they have lost most of their old fans and have not gained many new ones (despite how much Nick cries about poor marketing and promotion).

I'll still go see them when they play at local venues to hear them play 'older' stuff but I certainly won't pay for new albums that are 'crappy'.

Crap albums or not, LiVE is the one band I have and will travel there and back again to see for my love of their "old" brilliance. Old=pre BoP

I've learned to appreciate both Live's old & new stuff. Yes the sound and feeling have changed, but I will always welcome it, especially with this amazing band! Every album is unique. I've always had to take a few weeks to really get the feeling and understand a new album. They're my favorite band by a long shot, but their music seldomly blows me away the first time around.
Personally, I would definitely appreciate another BOP/SFBM sounding album!

Welcome to the forum, BlackMountain. Though I share your ability to appreciate every album, I wouldn't be too pleased with another BoP/SFBM sounding album. I'd probably still buy it, listen to it and love it in its own way, but I really want some rock from guys, this time.

I don't want to get in to this debate again- it was thrashed on the board a couple of years ago- but I maintain that music, whilst subjective, also includes a number of objective elements. I honestly don't see how anyone could claim that SFBM is a better album objectively than SS.

Individuals enjoyment of something, in this case an album, and whether the object in question is objectively good are seperate. You can enjoy SFBM all you want- you might be able to relate to it, you might find something to connect with or be challenged by, but in terms of it being objectively good... it's an entirely different thing. It definitely has it's merits, which I won't deny (but I myself don't find these nearly enough to make me want to listen to it.)

Yeah, nothing wrong with enjoying the newer albums. I enjoy them sometimes too. But they are pure shit.

Who the hell cares what ratings are on artist direct .. have you seen some of the ratings things get on imdb.com for example? Hell on some sites Live would get thrashed in ratings polls against even artists like Britney Spears ... it doesn't say anything about the quality of those albums at all (which is terrible).

IMDB is from an internet vote of anyone, artistdirect.com is rated from an actual reviewer who gets paid to write his opinion.

So because they get paid their opinions are somehow more valid? I would have thought opening it up to the masses would get a wider range of votes in which Live would get slaughtered in polls .. having a smaller group of pretenious wankers who get paid to write reviews is a much smaller group to choose from. Sure the masses include a bigger amount of idiots, but still. Seriously, the way you come up with things like "well a reputable person thinks this about Live" is supposed to make people go "whoa wait, if someone who is paid for their opinions thinks SFMB is a better album than Secret Samahdi then it must be!".

Well. Here come some thoughts from my side at last...

I have been detesting every single bash of the band on its FANSITE. It is pure bullshit. If you do not like the band - leave it to the others I guess... Anyway, I know that people are inclined to sound like they are brilliant analyzers sometimes. I have hardly seen it over here. And this is what makes things even worse. I do not detest criticism. I think that in its stronger forms (represented for example by Herzelied aka Pokey) it really brings a sense of a positive and constructive discussion... Other than that... "It's shit", :It makes me through up".... Uh, come on fellas.... It is 2008, eh? Not 1995, 97 or even 99. Have you ever thought that what worked in the 90s, will never work again? All the grunge and post-grunge...It just is OVER. I know some bands still make efforts. They sound great. But they are not as popular as, say, 10 years ago...

Back to LIVE. Have you ever seen a band that made a poppy record NOT TO BECOME popular with it? Huh? Me not. I do not feel it is a strong marketing finding or smth... Why don't you let people get BUSY with THEIR BUSINESS? It is pretty much disappointing that some fans prefer not to progress with the band, and, moreover, NOT FEEL IT. If you are depressed or want to let your anger out - hit TC or SS - noone is against it! I doubt that all the guys who say I HATE SFBM never felt like putting it on on the beach or smth... When Ed was saying they were releasing smth what FANS want... He meant it for the fans who FEEL him I guess. And I proudly consider myself one of those.

Open your eyes dammit. Open your souls. Whatever the next album brings, there is still a majority of fans who will accept it and drool over it whether it even be punk or techno. If they are doing it and they feel like doing it (meaning LIVE) - LET THEM FUCKING DO IT and if you do not enjoy it - than it is not that important to get into a virtual fight aboard with bashing the new material.

Anyway I do not know what I posted it for... Maybe I respect DanGum so much for so long that I decided to let it all out.. Dunno. I just know I will enjoy the new album and I can not wait for it.

Keep the faith.

The problem is I don't think it's a matter of "what worked then can't work now" and so on ... if it works for a band then just go for it ... people may say it's living in the past for Live to make another record in the same tone as TC or SS but that's what worked for Live it's when they sounded at their best. I'd rather see people criticise them over doing the "same old, same old" if it's still sounds awesome than people citicising them for writing absolute garbage like now. Some bands can reinvent themselves and some bands can't .. I don't think Live can, what they were in the mid 90s was just a band at it's best so why not run with it. But yeah, anyways.
You say you know bands who make efforts to keep their great sound and aren't as popular as they once were ... well, that's the case with most bands over time, even Live .. it's just a shame they're not less popular now but still making great music for those who want to listen as opposed to being less popular because they're devolving as a band.
