Did you see the interview he did with Ken and Ed about the incident with the song "Bell"??

I laughed so hard I nearly fell of my chair!

QUOTE(Pokey @ Jan 21 2008, 3:07 am) *

eh yeah for the most part it did change, the content changed too. Listen to a song like Operation Spirit, TBD, Insomia and the... to songs like Mystery and Out to dry ... yes the content is different (but then again its different from Operation Spirit to TBD) .. but they still have that roughness and deeper sounding voice. Even heavier rockers from the later years like Lighthouse have that clean higher sound that he's talking about. Hell even when they perform in concert now, songs like Selling The Drama when done back in the day is radically different now where Ed trys to add way too much falsetto shit to it ... the change certainly happened sometime between SS and TDTH but it seems that the pre TDTH vocals would still come out to play at certain times at gigs after TDTH was released.

Actually, a change in voice like this is very common. The average age for full voice maturity is about 30. It is not uncommon for a man's tessitura to become higher at an older age. I believe Ed has experienced a similar change. The time period would be about right, as well (post-Secret Samadhi).
I also believe that Ed sings more correctly now than on some of those older recordings. I know alot of people prefer the "old" sound to the "new," but that is a matter of subjective opinion. I actually prefer Ed's singing on the newer albums/concerts. However, that may be because of the music training I have. I also think people need to be careful not to confuse techinque with raw emotion.

Sorry my modem was down. You both make good points but I agree with Pokey there was a definite change in vocal expression -

I don't necessarily believe it to be technique, listen to I ALone at the 46664 his voice during the chorus is whiny and annoying not technically brilliant - try that against I alone 95,97,99 theres no comparison it sounds better from a singers perspective too, he just hits the notes better or something (sorry).

He is more masculine and notably deeper. At 46664 Heaven sounded pretty good though, maybe its all the runnin around he does during I alone??? that might be clutching at straws though.

Ed has sung I Alone like shit for years now. I completely agree that he sounds whiny in the chorus...

While both these links are cool, they both are showcasing the new sound of Ed's voice if you listen to AOY before 99 you will no what I mean. It don't matter so much anymore I just thought I may have missed an occasion in the past where someone had actuallly heard why his voice had changed.

But I Alone at 46664 is terrible He just can't make it sound good anymore, he should just slow down and SING it like he used once in while.

Like pretty much every rock frontman I've heard, Ed has his moments where he gets carried away and misses. Sometimes, pretty horribly. The reality is that, overall, Ed has a good falsetto. That's whether you like it, or not. Again, subjective versus objective. I'm really not going to argue the point, because it isn't worth it. I simply responded to the question about his voice in an educated manner

Sorry, but Ed does not have a good falsetto, it’s actually bordering on awful. Listen to a guy like Adam Levine sing in falsetto and then compare it to Ed.
