I came across Stuar Davis' website, and he wrote at the start of this new year (2008) what 2007 has brought for him. One of the highlights was for him the following:

QUOTE
Eddie Kowalczyk came in and spent the day recording gorgeous vocals for Miracle. A highlight of my life to working with that Bodhisattva. He's an exemplar for musical agents in the Mystery if there ever was one.

heynow.gif gorgeous vocals? I like to hear new Eddie vocals, the last new (studio) vocals that were recorded were the one from the Mystery duet with Chris. So I would be interested in hearing this. Anyone knows when Stuart is releasing his new music?

Nice Find! I'll be looking for that song when it comes out.

Sounds Cool!

One question I had was when did Ed's vocals change from what we hear in say: 1997 Secret Samadhi concert broadcast to the higher/softer vocals we hear lately?

I watched part of Woodstock '99 on you tube and Ed was still pretty deep like in 1997 so it had to be sometime after that, anyone know if there was a reason or a particular incident (like an illness or something)?

hi.gif ?

It didn't change. The song material changed. Instead of talking about "freaks" or "burning his eyes" he sings about love and women now. Here, watch part of these videos to see that no change has occurred in the actual singing. Both are All Over You

1999 Rockpalast
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=A24drpWSYa0

2006 Rockpalast

Also, if you listen to some songs out of order it makes sense. Take Ghost and shove it in the middle of BoP and it kinda fits.

eh yeah for the most part it did change, the content changed too. Listen to a song like Operation Spirit, TBD, Insomia and the... to songs like Mystery and Out to dry ... yes the content is different (but then again its different from Operation Spirit to TBD) .. but they still have that roughness and deeper sounding voice. Even heavier rockers from the later years like Lighthouse have that clean higher sound that he's talking about. Hell even when they perform in concert now, songs like Selling The Drama when done back in the day is radically different now where Ed trys to add way too much falsetto shit to it ... the change certainly happened sometime between SS and TDTH but it seems that the pre TDTH vocals would still come out to play at certain times at gigs after TDTH was released.

Actually, a change in voice like this is very common. My wife has a masters in vocal ped., which involves a lot of vocal anatomy. I also do some professional singing. The average age for full voice maturity is about 30. It is not uncommon for a man's tessitura to become higher at an older age. I believe Ed has experienced a similar change. The time period would be about right, as well (post-Secret Samadhi).
I also believe that Ed sings more correctly now than on some of those older recordings. I know alot of people prefer the "old" sound to the "new," but that is a matter of subjective opinion. I actually prefer Ed's singing on the newer albums/concerts. However, that may be because of the music training I have. I also think people need to be careful not to confuse techinque with raw emotion.
Finally, I wonder how much a younger Ed tried to change his voice to reflect what he was listening to, and what was big at the time. When you look at how young the band was when they started, and what was going on on the music scene, I think that is a real possibility. Perhaps as he grew more confident and more skilled, his voice changed as well.

wow, the first time I heard an explanation with anatomy and stuff, when talking about Ed's different voice. smile.gif cool, tnx!

and I think you also made a real good point by hinting to the music Ed is and was listening to than and now. Reading your post makes it all quite logical...

(but..... I prefer the post-grunge voice 1991-1995 rockin.gif)

The two of them sing well together.

With "smoke" I was a bit taken aback by the 'different' type of music it was, but it was cool!

I like Stuart Davis.

Yeah music training really teaches Ed to reach for those high notes, and fail.

Smoke is so good... Other people that overhear it think it sounds terrible but they don't understand tongue.gif

Stuart davis always seemed to me like some kinda leech clinging to ed's success. I mean, I guess he isn't hurting Ed but he is getting alot of free publicity. Also, the fact that he talks in a language he created scares me huh.gif

Like pretty much every rock frontman I've heard, Ed has his moments where he gets carried away and misses. Sometimes, pretty horribly. The reality is that, overall, Ed has a good falsetto. That's whether you like it, or not. Again, subjective versus objective. I'm really not going to argue the point, because it isn't worth it. I simply responded to the question about his voice in an educated manner

*giggles*

Scares me too! But he's done a lot of stuff independent of Ed. He's weird but cool!

Oh that reminds me!

Did you see the interview he did with Ken and Ed about the incident with the song "Bell"??

I laughed so hard I nearly fell of my chair!
