Ok, I'm gonna start off by saying that I personally believed that Throwing Copper is the most overrated album among Live fans. Don't get me wrong, it's an amazing album (all of Live's albums are...) but it's probably my 4th favorite album by them, behind The Distance to Here, V, and Secret Samadhi (in that order). Sorry for this long paragraph I got goin' smile.gif. Anyways...

1. The Dam at Otter Creek: My favorite opener for an album except for Simple Creed, a great little intro with the whispering, murmurs, and guitar riff. The last minute and a half are taylor.gif rockin.gif rockin.gif to the max, and exercise a formula that is apparent in quite a few of the songs on this album (the formula where the last part of the song just rock out).

2. Selling the Drama: What can I say that hasn't already been said? Of the 4 songs off of this album that can still be regularly heard on the radio, this is the best one, in my humble opinion. Good lyrics, upbeat and catchy.

3. I Alone: This song used to be one of my favorites, until I heard The Dolphin's Cry. I still enjoy this song, the interlude is amazing, but the verses are much better than the chorus. Overshadowed by it's brother song (The Dolphin's Cry) in my opinion.

4. Iris: A real grower on me. The opening strum is really cool, and the DAOC formula pops up again for the first time. The chorus in this song is very good, especially in the last one, the energy takes me to another place.

5. Lightning Crashes: The song that propelled them to rock stars got them there for a reason. As has been said, not the song it once was, but the lyrics and DAOC ending are amazing, and when the drums kick into the song it really gets going.

6. Top: Wonderfully catchy with amazing lyrics, this might be the most underrated song on the album.

7. All Over You: Speaking of catchy, this song has that factor too. The chorus is great "I've often tried to hold the sea, the sun, the fields, the tide..." rockin.gif

8. Shit Towne: A great song, especially in concert. Great solo, and the interlude where Ed sings "do me wrong, don't hold me back," sends shivers down my spine. Great.

9. T.B.D.: Another extremely underrated song, great lyrics. DAOC formula pops up again, and kicks in at the perfect moment. Anyone know what he says in that part?

10. Stage: A quick drum roll kicks you into a rocking song with great lyrics about a "rock and roll messiah". The solo in this song is simple yet effective, and another great interlude.

11. Waitress: A different song, but still very good. Catchy with funny yet surprisingly meaningful lyrics. One of live's few Wah-Wah solos, and a great concert song.

12. Pillar of Davidson: A beautiful song with one of the greatest chorus's ever, and amazing background vocals. Epic.

13. White, Discussion: The perfect closer, and extremely rocky. The ending drags on a bit, but other than that, a great song. Live's best concert song except for maybe Lakini's Juice (a lot better on CD than Lakini's Juice, though).

(Bonus) Horse: Laid-back and extremely different compared to their other songs, probably why it was originally unreleased. Catchy and nice.

In conclusion, an amazing album, but not as amazing as a few others...

ill be the first to say it.....V????!?!?!?! youre joking, right? i mean, i think i like the album more than most people, but to say its better than throwing copper....wow.

when did you first start listening to live? my guess is post-2000.

Lol yep. I'm probably the youngest person here. I don't know, it's just a lot different than their other stuff I guess. I'm not saying Throwing Copper is bad or anything, it's just I guess I'm tired of hearing it at their shows (and I've only been to 4 shows, I'm not old enough for my driver's permit, learners, or license yet!)

Apparently there may be a link between young age reflects bad taste. Why else would people buy Brittany Spears albums? Fact is that if DtM is that young he wasn't actually there for TC, so the impact the album had when it was happening is lost in translation.

I think it's a good thing. We have a huge bias on the album because it was part of our youth. I don't think there is a correlation between kids and bad music because DtM also likes Pearl Jam and REM. There is alot of poor music nowadays but there was just as much back in 1994. Boyz 2 men, Maddona, and Ace of Base were still popular with some of your classmates.

I think there is a correlation between Intelligence and music or Sex and music. A dumber person will drift to top fourty more easily than a more cosmopolitan person and a woman is socially inclined to like certain kinds of music so she is accepted. Being accepted by the popular girls is really important as a teen.

Also, lets try not to direct any kinds of negative feelings to DtM. He is a fairly new poster and we Definitely need some new faces.

Ha, sorry for not liking Throwing Copper that much. And I am much more of a child of the nineties and 70's than todays music. In fact, the only band that's come out since 2000 that I've really really liked are the Kings of Leon. They're cool. That's about it.

Same here man, Did your parents raise you on classic rock too? About 95 was the time I stopped hearing new music but I got to hear live as a kid. I'm 19 years old so I can't be much older than you. I used to hate ALL new music but I've learned about 5% is actually good.

New(er) Stuff I like:

A Perfect Circle
Bright Eyes
Squarewheel (Local band that sounds just like the Black Crows, Myspace them!)
System Of a down

I love all classic rock and can hold my own in a conversation about classic rock. I'll look into these "Kings of Leon" What song should I listen to?

I'll look into the bands too. The Black Crowes rock a lot too. And yep my dad likes pretty much the same bands I do. Some good Kings of Leon stuff, hmmm it's all pretty good. You gotta get used to the lead singers voice first though. Try songs like "The Bucket", "King of the Rodeo", "Taper Jean Girl (gotta love this one)", and "Camaro".

Album analysis is a way cool idea to get back into the material

1. The Dam At Otter Creek
The quintessential opener –the conjuring summons “Be here now” binds a dark, deviant story with its setting to ethereal effect

2. Selling The Drama
A declaration of freedom and wisdom and logic so redeeming as to be resolving by its own device

3. I Alone
My favorite song in the whole world for a time, still and ever among the great loves of my life

4. Iris
The obscurity is so damn attractive, I hope I never think I’ve figured this one out, the mystery keeps turning me on.

5. Lightning Crashes
For the longest time, I was so moved by this every time the response was physical. The experience is no longer consistent, but when it comes back again, capturing me in its poignancy – its just like I remember it and just exactly like it says - I can feel it.

6. Top
I’ve related with this one so much it holds such personal value, both inflictive and healing at once, surreal. I love it like a hard kiss.

7. All Over You
Wham bam thank you man. Exhilarating

8. Shit Towne
F***in’ A - this is as meaningful as universal truth, for anyone from anywhere who’s ever noticed how separated we are in our existence from one another, despite our measurable proximity.

9. T.B.D.
Bittersweet melancholy manifested as genius

10. Stage
This song is on speed. Highly addictive. F***s my brains out. On repeat. Several times.

11. Waitress
I’ve had some fun with this one but in all has had the most practical affect on me, a positive influence to have some compassion where my instinct might be to not.

12. Pillar of Davidson
Mournful but stirring, resentful of all it acknowledges but empowered as well, just a masterful combination of complexity and simplification.

13. White, Discussion
The ultimate apocalyptic finale, nostalgic of MJ anthems and a culmination of TC glory

14. Hidden Track (Horse)
Sobering country-twang, unwinds the intensity of the TC mood

Overall Summary: Epic

This album is THE album. 1 because it was the break through album for LIVE and 2 beacuse for me it summed up all the things that my teenage angst needed.

With paticular credit to white discussion waitress and pillar

That's a completely bullshit theory. The proof is right here on the message board. Plenty of 'older' people here have bad taste in music. I've been posting on Live message boards since I was 11, and most of the bands I loved then I still enjoy today. Even back then my favourite Live album was SS. And what difference does the fact that he 'wasnt there for TC' make? I can understand what you're getting at, but the albums impact or success should have no effect on your enjoyment of it.

There are a lot more good bands about. It's become a trend to say this; to dismiss all modern music. I think it's a mistake. There's a lot of shit in the mainstream, possibly more than there has been in the past, but if you search, there's lots of good music about. How old are you anyway?

14. Been a Live fan since I was 10, back when I first heard Heaven on the radio, and my parents showed me that they had all their albums.
