They'll have to sign with a label if they want any real marketing push in the future.... unless they're really contemplating just selling stuff while touring. This may work for another year or two but their fanbase will continue to dwindle.

I think the trouble with Live is that they need to find producers to help push them in new directions. This is how bands like U2 stay relevent. (You know I'm trying to think of "bands" from or before the early 90s that are still relevent, and I'm not sure there are many, R.E.M. doesn't really fit that anymore).

Jerry Harrison seemed to do that pretty well, I think his 3 albums are most Live fans favorites.

Jay Healy, who produced SS was an old friend of the band, V was virtually self-produced, and the producer of their last two albums haven't really pushed them (unless he's the one that suggested the light approach on SFBM).

I've said for a while that there won't be a new proper album in the foreseeable future. There will be new material, though.

well than it's your word against Ed's. He stated several times there will be a 2008-release.

They don't necessairly need to find a "label," but they'd need to sign with a distributor and a seperate PR agency to manage their bookings/publicity. It is becoming exceptionally common nowadays.

He also just said they are looking to release EPs and not a full album.

So does he really know what he wants... or is he just saying something that sounds kinda cool.
I´m hoping for a new album with that Live feeling to it that hasn´t been there since TDTH.
