I agree with Eamon in this one. If an artist is really having fun or supporting the song he's playing the audience will go along in that energy. Especially with a new album most bands play the songs they love most themselves of the album, or the ones with the most hitpotential. Either way the audience will benefit from hearig new songs. Worst case scenario is that one of em thinks...hell yeah.. great song.. I am gonna buy that whole album!!! In which case the band (hopefully) gains a new fan.

And if a setlists includes 7 hits from a band... and the rest is addition... I like those. Fun way to learn new songs by bands. And the audience can sing along the hits. Everyone happy.

In my experience I don't think that is usually the case. If the band went out there and played mostly new stuff that the majority of the crowd doesn't even know, the show would be dead and most of the people in the crowd would be bored. Most people that go to shows want to hear the hits because those are the songs that they know. I don't agree with that way of thinking at all. When I go to a show I want to hear everything that a band has to offer, old and new. I love being exposed to different songs that I may not have heard before. I think the reason Live keeps all of the hits in their set is because they know that they will get a reaction with those songs and it will keep the show exciting. But you would think that if they are so proud of their new stuff they would want to play it because they must think it's so good that everyone there would love it. It does pose an interesting question. At this point Live has to keep playing their hits because that is the habit they have gotten into and that is what most fans expect now. They missed their chance to build a strong and loyal following of rabid fans by mixing up their setlists and playing shows for their real fans instead of their casual ones. Oh well as long as their making a living I guess it's ok.

But the band has been mixing up their setlists as of late. You can no longer predict each song that is coming next throughout the show. They have also expanded their shows to over 2 hours in length. Mixing in classic songs with the hits has given Live some of their strongest shows to date in my opinion. They needs their hits to get their other songs heard by the audience.

Lightning Crashes, I Alone, All Over you, Selling the Drama, Lakini's Juice, TSUFL, Heaven, Dolphins, Dance with you, White Discussion, PLOTR/OS/BOG, Shit Towne, RTTW, TMH/Overcome

All of those with the / ones interchanging are pretty much always staples in pretty much every show .. that's 14 songs right there .. why not even just half that, do 7 "hits" a show and then we have opened up 7 new spaces in the setlist for some real surprises to pop up .. and it doesn't even mean that the 7 from that list that don't get picked in one show can't be interchanged for another one .. but all of them on every single setlist .. argh.
My point being that even if they got rid of 5 of them they could open up 5 new spots for something off their latest album .. but they don't do that, they stick with the same old ones which leads me to believe they don't have as much love or confidence in their new work as their old stuff (rightly so, but that's another argument). So does that mean that half or more than half of the new album in their eyes is ust filler?

When was the last time you attended a Live show Pokey? Turn My Head/Overcome was a staple in 2004 but it isn't surprising to not hear either in the concert today. Operation Spirit was played late 04 to late 05, but not at all now. Beauty of Gray is played on occasion but hardly every show and the same goes for Pain Lies on the Riverside.

Lightning Crashes, I Alone, All Over You, Lakini's Juice, The Dolphin's Cry, and Heaven are the biggest crowd pleasers and aren't going anywhere for the time being. Selling the Drama was a huge hit for Live and is played at most shows but not all. Shit Towne is a huge crowd pleaser and probably the most requested song at shows. As for They Stood Up for Love, Run to the Water, and Dance with You, they are some of the bands favorite songs and excellent to hear in concert.

The band has returned Iris, Rattlensake, Mirror Song and Voodoo Lady to the setlist. They have also played Simple Creed on rare occasion(Ed has trouble hitting some notes on the song). If I said that Live would play any of those songs in 2004, you'd think I were insane. They are trying their best to add some spice to the setlist without hurting their performance. I for one think they are doing an excellent job on both counts.

That's why I had those ones interchanging, for the most part TMH/Overcome was an Ed solo bit for quite awhile, hearing either of those in concert any time soon would really be nother new. the MJ songs pretty much were an "either or" for a long time in concert .. I am glad they dropped them on the latest tour and put Mirror song in there, but I see BOG is back so..

Iris, Rattlesnake, Mirror Song are awesome to hear back ... that's 3 songs, and they just seemed to replace songs from BOP and V .. none of the ones that we hear over and over and over made an exit from the list.
They really did move in the right direction with these ones, however I'm willing to bet that next time they change the setlist up these will be the songs that get replaced, not 3 of the "old faithfuls" also all the SFMB tracks will probably be replaced with album 8 songs except maybe Mystery.

Live have a list of songs as long as my arm to choose from and you have got to admit that compared to a lot of other bands they don't change their list up much and they don't play much from the latest couple of albums. And the only real explanation I can come up with is that they prefer the older material to the new stuff, which would basically be an admission half the new album is filler to them. If I'd just written a new album I was real excited about I'd be playing every damn track off it and sharing how excited I am with the audience. If your casual fan gets 4 maybe 5 big hits in a show, they'd be happy. 10+ is just argh.

I have to agree. Is the omission of newer songs from the setlist a way of LIVE saying "we know it's not the same"? I personally would love to hear more from SFBM or some different songs from BOP/V.

I do understand the whole crowd reaction thing and that LIVE have made an effort to extend their show and change of some songs. But why not replace AOY with Night of Nights for once? They have over 100 songs. Why not use 'em?

I would like to here more songs from BOP and TDTH as well as SFBM. I'd like to hear Face & Ghost and Feel The Quiet River Rage. It would be nice if they threw in a surprise every once in a while. In Orlando they played a couple from SFBM. They didn't play Show which was upsetting.

Now that is surprising!

As usual, I agree with lots of what Heather said tongue.gif

For the record, I would have voted 'Night of Nights' - cause imho it's the only REALLY good song on SFBM, but alas, for some insane reason they never pulled it out.

I voted Wings though, cause it doesn't bug me that much. thumbsup.gif

aww poo... Mystery won... I chose wings because It matched their older stuff a little better than all the others did. I failed to consider the popularity of the songs. I kinda figured if you heard mystery or the river you have heard all the songs on the album before.

I also agree with the person that said it doesn't matter what they play, it just matters about the energy and passion coming out of the performance. I have a good example of that:

I went to go see Styx perform once and they performed all their classics; Renegade, come sail away, and lady. I can't remember any of those now... All I remember them performing was a song called "Snowblind" The performance was awesome and I hadn't even heard the song before! If a band like Styx can play a "B-Side" like that, I'm sure the boys from Live can play anything and it can be good... even Wings nod.gif
