Confirming much speculation, Chris Cornell announced in a statement today that he has left Audioslave. The entire release simply said, "Due to irresolvable personality conflicts as well as musical differences, I am permanently leaving the band Audioslave. I wish the other three members nothing but the best in all of their future endeavors."

With the band electing not to tour behind last year's Revelations, both Cornell and Tom Morello working on solo projects and the announcement that Rage Against The Machine was reuniting for Coachella, the splitting of Audioslave does not come as a surprise.

Meanwhile, Cornell's second solo album is ready to go and will be out on May 1 via Suretone/Interscope. Carry On was produced by the legendary Steve Lillywhite and will feature a cover of Michael Jackson's "Billie Jean," as well as Cornell's James Bond theme, "You Know My Name."

Audioslave released three albums in their four-and-a-half year career: 2002's eponymous debut, 2005's Out Of Exile and last year's Revelations.

Tom Morello's first album as The Nightwatchman is titled One Man Revolution and will be out April 24.

Well I can't say I didn't see that one coming. I liked them a lot at first but there last cd just bored me. I also thought it was odd that they didn't even tour behind it. I am really excited to hear Chris's solo stuff except for maybe that whole Billy Jean thing. eh.gif

Plus this news makes me more hopeful for a Rage reunion that might include a new album or a tour.

Epic is plain and simple a band killer.

My god, you blame the label for this too?

Good riddance, I say. The first album showed potential, the second destroyed it, and the third just plain sucked.

Wicked about Rage though, wish I could see them.

Can't say I'm surprised to hear this.

They had a respectable debut, but all kaput since then.

Why are you always blaming the label. Audioslave was never meant to be a long term band. Morello even said that when the band formed, he did not think it would last long. Epic is not a band killer, Audioslave brought them so much income, they were one of the best selling bands for the label. Epic may or may not have screwed Live over but they had nothing to do with Audioslave.

I don't think anyone here is qualified to make that call.

The musical differences were evident anyway, so I guess it's the best for all of them.

I always thought Audioslave somehow couldn't reach it's potential. Tom and the rest obviously were better with RATM, while Chris has seen better days as well.

I think you should try listening to a few more bands then. Audioslave shouldn't even be mentioned in the same sentence as 'best band'.

Agreed. I was secretly hoping they would break up after the 1st album. Chris Cornell hybrid bands should stick to one album, max. Didn't he learn that lesson from his Temple of the Dog work? I love that stuff and it makes me want more. That's exacly how we should feel about Audioslave.

And you know what? I think the label had to be involved somehow. We don't know if their contract was a one-album deal or a three-album deal. These kinds of things rarely come from the band, themselves. Cornell's press statement was probably written by a 20-year old college student working at the label for an internship.

Anyway, here's to no more new Audioslave. I LOVE the first album, but I think it should have stopped there.

What Burd said. *nods*

The first album, the minute i heard it i thought "Oh this is amazing, they'll NEVER be able to do this again!"
There aren't words for how annoyed i was the first (and only) time i listened to the second one all the way through.

I agree somewhat. I have a feeling Cornell wanted to split and the rest of the band wanted to stay on the label. Lets face it. The other three guys probably dont want to keep changing front men or they will just be considered a good house band.
