Alrighty, then ... picture this if you will.

10 to 2 AM, X, Yogi DMT, and a box of Krispy Kremes,
in my "need to know" pose, just outside of Area 51,
contemplating the whole "chosen people" thingy
when a flaming stealth banana split the sky
like one would hope but never really expect
to see in a place like this.
Cutting right angle donuts on a dime
and stopping right at my Birkenstocks,
and me yelping "Holy fucking shit!".

Then the X-Files being,
looking like some kind of blue-green Jackie Chan
with Isabella Rossellini lips, and breath that reeked of
vanilla Chig Champa,
did a slow-mo Matrix descent
outta the butt end of the banana vessel
and hovered above my bug-eyes, my gaping jaw,
and my sweaty L. Ron Hubbard upper lip,
and all I could think was:
"I hope Uncle Martin here doesn't notice
that I pissed my fuckin' pants".

So light in his way,
like an apparition
he had me crying out,
"Fuck me!
It's gotta be
the Deadhead Chemistry.
The blotter got right on top of me.
Got me seein' E-motherfuckin'-T!"

And after calming me down
with some orange slices
and some fetal spooning,
E.T. revealed to me his singular purpose.
He said, "You are the Chosen One,
the One who will deliver the message.
A message of hope for those who choose to hear it
and a warning for those who do not."
Me. The Chosen One?
They chose me!!!
And I didn't even graduate from fuckin' high school.

You'd better...
You'd better...
You'd better...
You'd better listen.

Then he looked right through me
with somniferous almond eyes.
Don't even know what that means.
Must remember to write it down.
This is so real.
Like the time Dave floated away.
See, my heart is pounding
cause this shit never happens to me.

I can't breathe right now.

It was so real,
like I woke up in Wonderland.
All sorta terrifying.
I don't wanna be all alone
while I tell this story.
And can anyone tell me why
ya'll sound like Peanuts parents?

Will I ever be coming down?

This is so real.
Finally, it's my lucky day.
See, my heart is racing
cause this shit never happens to me.

I can't breathe right now.

You believe me, don't you?
Please believe what I've just said!
See the Dead ain't touring,
and this wasn't all in my head.
See, they took me by the hand
and invited me right in.
Then they showed me something...
I don't even know where to begin.

Strapped down to my bed.
Feet cold and eyes red.
I'm out of my head.
Am I alive? Am I dead?
Can't remember what they said.
God damn, shit the bed.

Overwhelmed as one would be, placed in my position.
Such a heavy burden now to be the One.
Born to bear and bring to all the details of our ending,
to write it down for all the world to see.

But I forgot my pen.
Shit the bed again.
Typical.

Strapped down to my bed.
Feet cold and eyes red.
I'm out of my head.
Am I alive? Am I dead?
Sunkist and Sudafed,
gyroscopes and infrared
won't help, I'm brain dead.
Can't remember what they said.
God damn, shit the bed.

I can't remember what they said to me.
Can't remember what they said to make me out to be the hero.
Can't remember what they said.
Bob help me!
Can't remember what they said.

We don't know, and we won't know

God damn, shit the bed.

Well, I can understand that you're not prepared to hear a happy lovesong like The River when you feel as awful as you do.
But believe me: you'll be fine someday.
But you've got a long way to go.
You have to find out (like everybody does) what you want to do with your life, what you believe in, who you can trust and who you can't trust who your friends are and who are not your friends.

It's like "The distance", isn't it?

And I hope for you that someday you find out who you are and that you can be satisfied with yourself and that you will feel as happy as Ed and that you will find someone who eases your pain.

GvB.

Are you for real?

Even though your post was not directed at me, I have to say that I am happier than I have ever been in my entire life. I know who I am, I've become who I wanted to be, I know who my friends are and I know what I believe in. Guess what? The River is still a shit song. For you to imply that a person that doesn't like the song is somehow unenlightened or doesn't know who they are is the single most ridiculous thing I have ever heard. Other than The River of course.

Hella.

And to completely disprove gvb's pathetic attempt at a point, let's look at some lyrics to songs I like quite a bit:

from NIN's "a warm place":

The best thing about life is knowing you put it together.

From Tool's "reflection":

So crucify the ego, before it's far too late
to leave behind this place so negative and blind and cynical,
and you will come to find that we are all one mind
capable of all that's imagined and all conceivable.
Just let the light touch you,
and let the words spill through,
and let them pass right through,
bringing out our hope and reason.

And from Tool's "lateralus":

I embrace my desire to
feel the rhythm, to feel connected
enough to step aside and weep like a widow.
To feel inspired, to fathom the power,
to witness the beauty, to bathe in the fountain,
to swing on the spiral
of our divinity and still be a human.

With my feet upon the ground I lose myself
between the sounds and open wide to suck it in:
I feel it move across my skin.
I'm reaching up and reaching out,
I'm reaching for the random or what ever will bewilder me.

Following our will and wind we may just go where no one's been.
We'll ride the spiral to the end and may just go where no one's been.

Spiral out. Keep going.

Yeah, I'm totally anti-positivity. ...

The fact is that I don't at all mind the tone, mood, or life outlook made clear in Live's recent work. What I mind is that all of their recent work is completely and entirely uncreative, unoriginal, and uninspired.

but! (as I asked you before mcpheezy) what do you think is the most creative by Live? I'd like to know what things are really good that they've done on record (if they did anything really good at all, in your opinion).

Being a Live fan for a long time, I just recently (since a few years I guess) started to think what part of the Live songs I really like (almost everything in my case), and what part of it would be real good in musicans eyes (not all). Although I can't say exactly what, I think that MJ, TC, SS and TDTH has all a few songs on it, that have good/creative elements. I like V, BoP (and most of SFBM) also really, really much (!!), but i see nothing real creative in it. It is maybe original in it's own way, I think Overcome is made very well to thouch people, I think Like I do is a real good example of how modern mainstream rock can be attractive for the masses, etc etc. Just examples of what songs from the last 3 albums can do....
...but these 3 really creative...? hmm no.

Give you're 2cents on all Live material pheezy, pleazz?

Shit, I hella forgot that you ever asked me about that. I don't have my ipod with me right now (I'm in an on campus computer lab since I don't currently have the internet at my apartment) but I'll try to bring it with me tomorrow and go through their work and find some creative stuff that they've done over the years.

Thanks for reminding me about that.

God fucking dammit. Do you seriously think these lyrics are creative/interesting/innovative/anything? What the fuck are you doing, listening to such genric bullshit? Don't you realize there are a thousand other bands singing about the exact same thing in the exact same way? I don't understand how you can rank live above bands doing the exact same thing as them. What the fuck is going on inside your head that makes you think these lyrics are in anyway special or unique?

Goddammit.

I do! I love this song, I still listen to it every time I get in the car. Haven't gotten sick of it yet.
Ed didn't steal the lyrics from anyone else; they're unique.. don't hear many metaphoric lyics these days.. the melody is totally unique and doesn't sound like anything they'd done before. I honestly can't name more than 3 Live songs that sound simliar to another one, which I can't say about too many other bands with over 100 songs in their catalog.

The River is a fun song to listen to. I'm past the age of caring what the freak or frat boy next to me thinks. It may be cheesy, but if I like it, why not enjoy it. And I like the lyrics too. Personally, I can relate to the lyrics since one of my hobbies is hiking, particularly in the mountains of Sedona. After a long day of hiking, I'm hot, exhausted, thirsty, and out of nowhere I see a flowing refreshing river, just lying there all naked on the floor, then I proceed to get a handful of the pure cold water, splash it on my face, making my lips tremble. Nothing like a refreshing pool of water from a flowing river in the mountains of Sedona. Maybe I'm just a hippie, but I love this song; it's brilliant!

I hate to do this to a fellow White Sox fan, but I hate to break it to you that The River is not actually about a river. It's about sex. And if you like the lyrics la la dah dah or think they are creative, you don't have any idea what creativity is (not necessarily directed at you smile.gif ).

The lyrics can be pretty ambiguous, it can be about sex, love, relief, or even a river, if you want it to be. It's not just about sex, that's just an easy answer Ed gives when he's in those awkward interviews. It's up to the fans to interpret the lyrics anyway they want, that's how Ed writes.

I wasn't a big fan of the la da da da when I first heard it, but it doesn't bother me anymore. I do think the River is relatively creative, and most people who really know me say I'm one of the most creative persons they've met.. and I do have a somewhat idea of what creativity is. It doesn't take a rocket scientist to realize a lot of people would hate the song, but I happen to like it.
