As much as I love some of their music, they do have a lot of filler. Especially on In Absentia- though it also has some of their best music on.

swedeguy, do you like Opeth?

I've heard of them but I can't say that I heard any of their music. Are they good?

Yeah, if you like PT you'll probably like Opeth's album 'Damnation'. It's produced by SW from Porcupine Tree, and he does a lot of backing vocals/keys and stuff. It's a beautiful piece of work, check it out. thumbsup.gif

Awesome. You're more into them than I expected. Signify is definitely an incredible album. I didn't get into them early either, until just a couple months before Deadwing (I had never heard them up until that point). Up the Downstair is also a major favorite of mine. And Voyage 34...holy shit that shit's good. Anyway, I'm really surprised (and happy) by all the people here expressing their liking of Porcupine Tree...it's really cool. They're definitely a band that deserves more recognition than they get, but I hope they never become uber-popular. That would just ruin their exclusivity. They are damn awesome.

I disagree that Porcupine Tree have a lot of filler...especially with In Absentia. In my mind In Absentia is alongside such albums as the Dark Side of the Moon and Tommy as one of those "perfect" or "as close to perfect as you can get" albums. Every song just hits home perfectly. You have to search far and wide in PT's catalogue to really find true filler, because most of what they do, IMO, is not. Signify. Up the Downstair. The Sky Moves Sideways. There is no filler on those albums. Stupid Dream, yes. Lightbulb Sun, maybe, but if any hardly at all. In Absentia and Deadwing are filler-less too, if you ask me. I can't think of a bad track on any of these five albums I mentioned. I just hope the next album matches up in quality to the previous two, because from what I experienced from them doing the new material live in concert in October, I didn't find it extremely promising. I'm still cautiously optimistic about the upcoming album though.

Jason, have you checked out Blackfield?

Yes, very. They only have one album, but they're coming out with a new one in January and will be touring to support it in February. Blackfield is composed of Steven Wilson (guitarist/vocalist/main songwriter of Porcupine Tree) and Israeli pop icon Aviv Geffen. Together, the two have made very melancholic, heartfelt rock that is definitely worth a spin for any Porcupine Tree fan. Many Blackfield songs are in some ways even better than most of what PT does. Check them out for sure. Their first album is self-titled, and if you want to download a song or two to sample, go for Cloudy Now and Pain.

Yes it is. But it's a great one at that. As I told Jason, certainly worth checking out for a PT fan.

Both of you's, let me know how you like them. To me, they're equally as special as PT.
