QUOTE(edstipe @ Nov 30 2006, 10:28 am) *

I could go on for days about this, but in brief: their influence has been infinitely more powerful; the respect they have earned from artists (and others) in the industry is a thousand times stronger; the amount they have given back to their fans (they were the introducers of the "guaranteed best seats in the house for fan club members" innovation and the making every show available on an "official" bootleg idea -- both of which have been copied by a number of other artists in the past few years) and to charitable causes in general (they play a number of benefit shows every year, and donate part of EVERY ticket they sell to charity) absolutely dwarfs what Live has done; and, finally, their music is frankly just better, or at least it has been since Live decided to create (?) the album that we call V.

Get it?

I think Pearl Jam's last two albums have been utter crap. Its great that you love them but I'm sure there are ton of people who would take V, BOP, or SFBM over Pearl Jams latest work. Hell, I'd take V, BOP, and SFBM over Pearl Jams entire catalogue but that's because I'm a Live fanatic. smile.gif

Name one good song on Riot Act besides "I Am Mine." Name one good song period on their latest effort. World Wide Suicide is extemely incoherent and the second single was atrocious. I have been a Live fan since Throwing Copper, but I came a fanatic around the time V was released. To prove the point, I've seen the band 18 times in concert since they released V and only twice beforehand.

I know a lot of people like angry/depressing music, but that isn't me. I was originally drawn to Live due to their messages of love and peace. I was also intrigued by the spiritual overtones of their music. That's what makes Live, for me, the best bands going today. If they never go hard rock again, its cool with me.

while i LOVE pj, there are others here that can argue this point far better than i. and seeing LiVE that many times makes you an expert on pj and their coherentcy?

Good songs on Riot Act besides "I am Mine": "Can't Keep," "Save You," "Love Boat Captain," "Thumbing My Way," "All or None:

Good songs on self-titled: All of them. It is a fucking brilliant album. Listen to it. "Life Wasted," "Gone," the beautiful love song called "Parachutes," "Army Reserve," "Severed Hand," all of them. "Inside Job" may be the greatest Pearl Jam song ever written, and, creatively, far surpasses anything Live have ever done.

If you think seeing Live 18 times makes you any sort of expert on good music, go talk to some of the Pearl Jam fans that have seen them 20+ times on their current tour alone. (By the way, it's much more exciting to do that with a band that changes their setlist EVERY night).

It's kind of pointless to discuss Pearl Jam with someone who dismisses their music without even listening to it, but I couldn't resist responding despite those reservations. And don't even try to claim that you HAVE listened to Pearl Jam's music, because if you had you would know that not all of Pearl Jam's latest release is "angry/depressing music."

Live has as good a chance of getting into the Hall of Fame as the band I played in in college does.

I don't think it makes me an expert on good music. I never said that at all. It just shows that I really like Live's new stuff and I'm just not saying it to be a fanboy. And its great that you like Pearl Jam, but its also okay that I think that most of their songs suck. Live has been mixing up their setlist quite a bit lately, not to the level of Pearl Jam, but more than usual. However, to me Live is the far superior concert act. You don't have to agree with my opinion, but it isn't going to change no matter what is said on a message board. The same goes with you.

Correction:

Pearl Jam's last SEVEN albums have been utter crap.

Ten is the only good thing they've ever done and it only has three good songs on it.
