just requested the dolphins cry on the radio. the first verse sounded nice then as soon as the chorus comes in its like someone fucked witrh the levels and turned it right down.

im not a music person but i know its got something to do with hypercompression and the way those older live songs are recoreded. Anyone care to explain this to me?

G'Day Mate,
Did you request that on 96?
Coz I heard it this arvo and I did pick up a bit of a difference.

Leigh.

Well, you're right, it is to do with compression- but it's nothing to do with the compression on the Live album. (in terms of mastering, TDTH is a pretty recent effort- in fact, all of Live's albums, except for MJ, have been pushed to the top in terms of volume. IMO they were mastered nicely until V; BOP and SFBM are horribly overcompressed)

The reason songs like Dolphin's Cry sound different on the radio, is because radio stations have limiters/compressors which push the overall volume of a track to the peak; so any quiet sections of a song will be pushed to a much louder volume than you would hear on the cd. Most current mainstream crap music lacks any dynamics, so it's not as noticable as songs like TDC, which have the whole soft verse/loud chorus thing going on.

I'm not explaining this terribly well- I find it hard without being able to use hand expressions, or graphs or something. If you don't understand, I'll try to explain it better.. or someone else will.

i did assume it was the radio end of it, thats pretty much all i need to know to support my theory that radio is shit thanks. but i know with even the most recent rock songs i dont notice the difference between loud and soft as much as i did with TDC. I guess that, amoung other reasons, is why live isnt radio friendly lol.gif
