Throwing Copper

I've always said TC plays like a setlist:

Dam
STD
I Alone
Iris
LC
Top
AOY
ST
TBD
Stage

Waitress
POD
WD

Horse (ala the "Dance with You" current close)

I'd break the show into two parts, with a brief intermission in between. The first half would start out heavy. Very driving. The ominous beginning of "top", the driving rhythms of "stage" and "sparkle". The show would open with a few energetic songs to get the crowd going. "iris" would be a transitional track. With some heavy parts and some softer parts, it fits perfectly as the song used to change the tone and feel of the show. "the beauty of grey" serves a similar purpose, in that while still somewhat forceful, there's also an tone of softness in it. "i alone" would then be the first of a series of romantic songs, which get progressively lighter and slower. The last of these would be "overcome", which would be immediately followed by "heropsychodreamer". The quick transition from the stillness of "overcome" to the power and speed of "heropsychodreamer" would jump-start crowd back into madness. This madness would then be harnessed, increased, and developed by the heavy sounds of "lakini's juice". The driving guitar riff would push the audience further into the state of mayhem "heropsychodreamer" sent them into, while the longer, more open tones of the song would ease them into a state of calm. With both of those things going on at once, at the end of the first half of the shoe, the audience would feel both fulfilled and needful.

The second half of the show would begin with "the dam at otter creek", which would both slowly ease the audience back into the atmosphere of performance and set the tone of the rest of the show. The next three songs would continue to portray a feeling of uneasiness. These three songs' darker emotions and their slow, steady flow would weave the audience in and out of every emotion imaginable. After the climactic conclusion to "gas hed goes west", only another sudden shift in mood could serve as an appropriate end to this show. "white, discussion" would end the show on a high energy, positive feel. This would be felt even moreso due to the drastic contrast from the songs preceeding it. This song could be stretched and drawn out, allowing plenty of room for improv solos and the like. When the song finally climaxed, the crowd would be at its highest point.

I put a lot of time and effort into this. I'm not really sure why. I enjoyed it, though, and I do like the way it came out.

Re: people saying TC plays like a setlist..

I agree. I would love to see TC all the way through. I have a Throwing Copper Live mix CD that consists of live mp3s of all the songs on TC, and whenever I listen to it I imagine TC as a setlist... I would definitely not be disappointed if I went to see Live and they played nothing but TC. Of course, that would never happen, but that's what this thread is about, right?

Call it cliché, but TC is and always will be my favourite album. smile.gif

Awesome set list and analysis, pheez and I agree with emobus. I'm a total TC whore and when I saw PoD live, I was so freakin' blow away. What would've kicked my ass even more was to see "top" performed. smile.gif

I must admit this setlist would kick ass (though I might make a couple changes in order). However, there's no way I'm reading all that stuff you wrote after it...just don't have the time.

Come on, that stuff I wrote is the best part. It explains why I put them all in the order that I did. Read it.

see why dont live put that much effort into their setlists?? Ed said once or maybe it was chad that its not that they're lazy but they got so much other stuff goin on like families. What else do they spend their time on?? Its their fucking job! Change the set list, it takes two minutes in Word! And if u dont remember the songs so what, it'll still be fun. Yes, I'm talking TO YOU, Live!

So off you go..

Yeah, a lot of bands don't seem to put much thought into their setlists. Pisses me off.

More people need to read my explanation of my setlist and post similar things. I'd like to know why people put the songs in the order that they did.

Whoa... tough one...

Working on set-lists is tough - I know how much time Sam and I put into his - and he's just playing pub gigs!

Ok... I'm not including anything from the new album - as have only hear The River.
-----------------------------------------------
Where Fishes Go (best opener I've seen)
All Over You
Selling The Drama
The Beauty Of Gray
The Distance
Heaven
Lightning Crashes

(quiet acoustic section)
They Stood Up For Love (slow piano version)
Ghost
Turn My Head
Dance With You

(rock outro)
Freaks/Rattlesnake (one of - not both)
Like I Do
The Dolphin's Cry
Lakini's Juice
White, Discussion

(encore)
Pillar Of Davidson (return with the bass intro of Pillar)
Overcome (solo Ed)
Run To The Water
I Alone (extended ending)
-----------------------------------------------

Overall, I think we're pretty lucky - Live's set-list is generally pretty good. nod.gif

Mother Earth is a Vicious Crowd
Rattlesnake
Graze
Insomnia and the Hole in the Universe
Top
Feel the Quiet River Rage
Herophychodreamer
Lakini Juice

Intermission

Good Pain
Iris
Sparkle
Vine Street
White Discussion

Here is my list. Only spent 5 minutes on this, but this is very close to my dream list. Might edit some sections later. Mother Earth would be the perfect opener to set the stage for the rest of the night. I picked songs that they probably wouldn't play on their usual repetitive setlists. Herophychodreamer and Lakini Juice seem like a perfect match together. And the second half is a bit brighter and happier, but still intense.

(pre-Songs from Black Mountain)

Where fishes go
Brothers unaware
Iris
Stage
Heropyschodreamer
Like I do
We deal in dreams
The beauty of gray
Ghost
The distance (extended with jam)
Overcome (full band version)
Hero of love

Encore No. 1
Good pain
Flow
Dance with you

Encore No. 2
Pillar of Davidson
Selling the drama

Encore No. 3
Dazed and confused (Led Zeppelin cover)

At the request of pheez...

Where Fishes Go has the mysterious intro that sets the tone. It builds into a rocker and slips away as eloquently as it came. Crowd's mellow, time for Brothers Unaware, which is quiet and unassuming and takes its time.

Time to blow the mellowness of out the fucking water. Iris. Stage. Heropsychodreamer. Like I do -- Each an equally hard rocker that captures the crowd, builds excitement. You have our attention.

Change of gears again. We deal in dreams is a few notches down and a nice payoff to fans, and in a way so the Beauty of Gray. But both can be expected.

Enter the changeup: Ghost. Where the fuck did that come from? Haunting, smoldering and passionate -- a stark juxtaposition to Beauty of Gray. Crowd's mellow again, and wanting something else. Give them The Distance, and while you're at it extend it to 10 minutes with some full band jamming and a keyboard solo. Freaky deaky.

That was pretty cool, you say, but then comes the full band version of Overcome and you stand corrected. Why in god's name didn't they leave it this way on TDTH, you wonder aloud. And, then you suddenly remember this album called "V." Oh, yeah, and Hero of Love was a decent ender ... perfect.

OK, you know there's an encore coming. Defeats the purpose, but what the hell. Good pain. Holy shit -- they still remember how to play that song? Flow. Wow -- wasn't that rocker from "V" too? Dance with you. Of course, that's the perfect ending, right?

Nope, a couple more. Remember our greatest album ever, Live psychically says, called Throwing Copper? Here're the two best songs. Damn, what an end.

Nope, one more. What's it gonna be -- Dolphin's Cry, Heaven, Pain Lies on the Riverside, I Alone -- wait a sec, that riff sounds familar... hey, that's Zeppelin! Piss in pants.
