my all-time favorite:

"I am smelling like a rose that somebody gave me on my birthday death bed..."

-STP - from Dead & Bloated

Don't ask me why, it's just fucked up enough that I like it cool.gif

"I wear black on the outside cause black is how I feel on the inside, and If I seem a little strange well that's because I am." ~ Unloveable by the Smiths

I think Morrissey is the greatest lyricist of all time!! He's just genious! I could basically post everything he has ever written.

"I'd rather laugh with the sinners than cry with the saints, the sinners are much more fun." -Billy Joel

"it's the way we sing that makes them dream"

"
Conquer some serenity
Lay yourself in fields of poetry
Close your eyes to all you see
Lay your weary head here with me" -Ed Roland

There are a ton more that I could list but those are the first that come to mind.

And pretty much every line that Ryan Adams has ever written.

Wow, I could go on forever with a topic like this.

Off the top of my head, here's a few:

1. Possibly the greatest visual description of music I have ever heard: "I close my eyes / And I close my mouth / And do this all in time / To the music, that dances like fools set on fire / Flailing their arms in a room full of whores" (Ryan Adams, Goodnight Hollywood Blvd.)

2. For its beautiful imagery: "See how the sky is made of sapphire / The colours flowing through our hands / The moon is fire in your hair / A million miles beyond what science understands" (David Gray, Falling Free)

3. Mandatory +Live+ lyric: "Who is making over, idolizing princes / Banishing the dreamers with
barbed-wire fences / And telling all the children who run to her feet / That they have no vision,
and love's all diseased" (Live, Waterboy)

4. For its simple but powerful personal connection to my own life: "I gather speed / From you fucking with me" (Pearl Jam, Rearviewmirror)

Actually there are far too many Pearl Jam lyrics that blow me away, so I'll just list a few here:

- "Hold on to the thread / The currents will shift / Glide me towards you / Nothings left / And we're all allowed to dream of the next / Ohh, the next time we touch..." (Oceans)

- "I'm not blind, I can see it coming / Looks like lighting in my child's eye / I'm not frantic, I can feel it coming / Violently shakes my body" (Army Reserve)

- "And now my bitter hands, cradle broken glass / Of what was everything / All the pictures have all been washed in black / Tattooed everything..." (Black)

There's a ton more, but my lunch break is over, so I'll come back leter. happy.gif

Great lyric. If I started listing my favorite Ryan Adam's lyrics I would probably just be typing out his entire songs. So I didn't even include him. I really think he is one of the best writers out there. One of my absolute favorites of his is Meadowlake Street, every word in that song from beginning to end is perfection.

Really great lyrics in this whole song. Greater that it was written by a teenager who did not grow up in an urban city.
