"Call Me A Fool" but I took heart from his uncertainty of whether they'll continue with pop or go back to ROCK next album tongue.gif

Of course he did mention Ed wrote the whole of SFBM before the band recorded, but what was more surprising for me actually was that he said Ed even recorded his parts BEFORE the drums- via a click track. That's pretty far out.

Thanks for the link smile.gif

Yeah, "The next record might go back to the rock sound again, I don’t know. We haven’t decided yet.” , that's all I wanted to hear, the possibility they gonna rock (not only in concert, but also at the record) again.

What Chad said confirmed what I had thought. While I enjoy the new album, it really does sound like separate instruments playing parts. Whereas on Throwing Copper, it came out like one sound - one good sound, I might add.

Much like a lot of people, I'd like to see them write together again. I just prefer that sound.

It is often done, that instruments are recorded seperately. That is a standard, and for some music it works, for other not.
But you're right, it bugs me, that the voice is recorded, before Chad even worked on his part. For a drummer like him (who works for the music), it's not quite as unusual as it seems. But if all the other instruments have done it the same way, it's clearly Ed's record, if we haven't believed it yet...

Eds guitar and vocals would (probably) have just been guide tracks... not final recordings. Makes sense for a pop album to be recorded that way.

Yeah, I understand it's done that way. But for me, it's one o those "a whole is more than the sum of its parts" things. The later Live albums sound more like some parts put together, whereas the earlier ones sounded like a whole.

Yeah, could've been that way!

You're right, but it's more the production and the mix. It's so polished and precise, everything is so clear, that you can hear every instrument (except the bass) for itself. Plus the compression kills much of the dynamics. It's difficult then to get a "whole" feeling, but it's possible. The work of Steven Wilson in Porcupine Tree is a good example.
