Man, talk about a downer. I hope the rest of the day went better.

I mean, it’s totally wtf from start to finish but I’ve always had an appreciation for it. Perhaps the circumstances are the reason why.

I had just turned 17 when V leaked. I was still living at home and my parents had both just left for work when I got on the family computer and discovered the leak had just happened. I had a bunch of weed and one hit of acid that I’d been saving for a while and ripped into both and some of my mom’s vodka while it downloaded for over an hour. All I can say is V never sounded better and my how times have changed.

Before the V leak, Live posted 6 clips on their official website. They were 2 minute preview versions of various songs off V. I remember disliking all of them. When V leaked, my disappointment was confirmed. It wasn't until after SFBM came out that I found myself in an altered state one evening and was able to go back and appreciate V and enjoy it for what it was. Great production, good electronic arrangements, and Ed's 90's voice was officially shot.

Oh it was well before that. That’s why there’s so much awful falsetto on TDTH.

Yes! I agree about his voice here. The “Iiiiii” at the beginning of We Walk In The Dream is like nails on a chalkboard. TDTH was the beginning of the end. Less than half of the album is pristine, the other half is where “solo-Ed” started rearing his ugly songs:

The Distance
Sparkle
Run to the Water
Face and Ghost
Feel the Quiet River Rage
Meltdown
We Walk In The Dream
Dance With You

To go from 3 straight albums where I skip no songs, to skipping over 8, was really shocking for me at that time. I actually only recently started liking They Stood Up For Love. I used to skip that one, too. It only took 20 years to grow on me.

I know some people really loved the entirety of this album, and I never understood why.

I think it’s a near perfect album but it definitely has a different feel. I don’t agree that meltdown and FTQRR are more “solo” Ed songs though.

I agree with this.

It's the best music they ever made, with the best lyrics Ed (or most people, for that matter) ever wrote, imo. All of the outtakes too. I would take just about any song from the TDTH sessions over almost every other Live song, with only a few exceptions. It's one of my favorite albums by any artist.

TDTH was a good album that came from a phenomenal writing era. It ended up good because it’s hard to ruin such great material but it certainly didn’t capture the greatness of the writing era. We have talked ad nauseam about the shift in the direction circa late 98 early 99 during which time songs like TDC, The Distance, and DWY appeared, songs like Vine Street, Don’t Wait, Change etc disappeared, and songs like TSUFL were drastically transformed. It’s a shame and even though the album is good it certainly was the beginning of the end.

True, Meltdown is one of my top 5 favorite Live songs and def not the start of Ed solo songs! Go watch that 1998 live recording.

And I agree about the lyrics on TDTH too. Awesome era for their songwriting

TDTH was the beginning of the end for Live.

I definitely enjoyed it at the time but I rarely find myself searching it out in my music library.

It's been almost 20 years since Ed has written a decent song. Can you imagine writing all of those smash hits and then not even coming close ever again? Maybe he was "juicing" in the 90's? Perhaps there was a ghostwriter? Talk about writer's block.

Those “unreleased songs” are incredible, up there with anything Live ever wrote.
