In order to give an opinion I'd have to listen to Ed Sheeran... so I will never know how much this sounds like Honest Man. tongue.gif

Given that a lot less people buy music (even back when TGF came out), that the band intentionally didn't advertise as Live and Candlebox, and that they stopped touring just when "Appetite" was finally getting some attention (Due to CT breaking his leg right?), 20,000 seems right. Sad though as the album is head and shoulders above anything from Live or Candlebox since.

I feel like there are some TGF cuts out there that I'd love to hear.

You only need to listen to the first 21 seconds. There's no singing, just a yell by what sounds like a woman. You certainly won't need to subject your ears to any Ed Sheeran.

Obviously, the first three bars of the main riff are pretty close. the rest of the song is nothing like it.

That said, I believe it's enough similarity to say it's probably an infringement.

But I do like the song anyway.

It's similar, and while Honest Man is a good song, it's not a standout riff, it's pretty generic rock stuff that you could easily imagine someone else coming up with without having copied it.

In any case I don't believe artists should sue each other over this stuff. If a whole song is obviously stolen that's one thing, but imagine if every blues artist, or every painter or writer sued everytime somebody used their stuff as the inspiration for a new piece of art. We wouldn't have a rock scene at all if musicians had historically behaved like that.

Must admit I've always thought that the Honest Man riff sounds like the kind of thing someone who's just starting out on guitar would come up with.

Does it make it a bad riff though?

No. It serves the song well.

Ok, then the rock music should be full of this same riff. I have not listened to any other songs which have this riff except Honest Man and Blow.

And Believe

Several years later, but I asked this when Chad T was on the podcast with Chad Gracey. He mentioned "they may have signed an agreement that states they cant talk about that" - which implies that they likely cut a deal with the songwriters of BLOW after someone noticed the similarities.
