So, if the three cut songs had been put on the album, where do you think they would have gone on the track listing?

We have the demo tape to reference, of course, but do you think the placement of the songs would have changed if they kept them after they added the newer songs, etc?

I know it's basically just an intellectual exercise with no correct answer, so I'm just curious where everyone else would place them...

I've always thought that Hold Me Up would work well between Top and All Over You.

A 17 song album (including Horse) was never going to work, so I think a better question is probably is what songs could these 3 outtakes have replaced? There is talk in the Susquehanna thread about how it could have been an alternate closer. I think Hold Me Up and We Deal In Dreams could have fit in the Stage and Waitress spots nicely.

One thing I'm sure of is how well they are sequenced on this reissue. Hold Me Up > WDID > Susquehanna all flow so well together thumbsup.gif

I can't imagine Throwing Copper without Stage. I'd say you could maybe replace Waitress with Hold Me Up, and Susquehanna would have worked fine as an untitled second closer (better than Horse).

I agree 100% with this.
Someone else mentioned somewhere about Stage being a weak track. Nuh uh, no way. Stage is one of Live’s top tracks, IMO.

I also meant to add, I’ve never cared for We Deal In Dreams. To me, it is “Ed’s solo style” coming out way back then.

You can't replace Waitress, that is a key song on the album. The song I'd drop from TC for something else would be TBD.

I get your point with Waitress. It was very “for the time.” But, no TBD? Those lyrics, though!! -Some of Ed’s deepest. Damn, this is hard.

Yeah, I am not gonna replace anything on TC. That's like asking "which one of Michelangelo's works really sucks?".

The outtakes didn't fit on the album. Hold me up should have been a single off Mallrats and the others on soundtracks or released as B-sides off the ialone and lightning crashes singles and call it a day.

I agree with this - Susquehanna does have a 'hidden track' quality about it and is certainly better than Horse.

I don't think any songs on TC should have been cut, but the outtakes could have been contenders for the spots held by some of the songs I mentioned.

TC is pretty close to perfect the way it is, after playing around with it this is the only way I could think to improve it:

1 The Dam At Otter Creek
2 Selling The Drama
3 I Alone
4 Iris
5 Lightning Crashes
6 Top
7 All Over You
8 Shit Towne
9 Hold Me Up
10 T.B.D.
11 Stage
12 Waitress
13 Pillar Of Davidson
14 White, Discussion
15 Susquehanna [Hidden track]

The album is perfect.

There is no way any song could be replaced by any other song, be it Susquehanna or Stairway to Heaven

There are very, very few albums that I like every single song on and that I wouldn’t change.

Live has two of them.

Indeed. And the second one is not Secret Samadhi.

Back in the 90's record labels would purposely put 3 singles on an album and fill the rest with crappy filler.

Live could have easily put out an album in early 1996 and have the tracklist start - Hold me Up, We Deal in Dreams, Susquehanna, Cheetah, and then throw in another 8 crappy songs and they would have been further cemented as one of the best bands at the time
