Maybe they're not ending up with a big promo push cause it's a self produced EP from a band with their own new label. When was the last time Live was actually on late night?

You have a point. I guess if they were with a big time label, I guess that label would do the promoting for them?

The last time I remember them being on late night TV was Dolphin’s Cry on Letterman. Ed wore a beanie with flames on it. Anything after that? I still think this is feasible for them now... Those shows have music bookers who need contacting. If folk singer John Prine and rapper Sheck Wes (“best known for the song ‘Mo Bamba’, his debut album Mudboy, released in October”) can land a spot on Jimmy Fallon in the coming week, so could Live.

... Letterman always had the best musical guests.

QUOTE(Hoodstock @ Oct 25 2018, 10:53 pm) *

Just catching up on this thread and it has definitely gone south.

I recently saw a high school photo that a woman shared of her and Ed going to prom together next to a recent picture of her meeting Ed again. For me it's another reminder that these guys are human just like us.

Sometimes famous people get placed on pedestals because they ended up in cool professions that many of us have dreamed of at some point. At the end of the day the members of Live are just people doing what they love, their way.

The members of the board are also people - people who shared a love for the same music as me. If you never connected with the music of Live you never would have found your way to this board.

Over the years it's been my choice to follow this band and to stick with them. I'm not going to bash other people for doing the same. I'm also not going to fault people for losing that connection or moving on. People change and life happens.

After reading the recent interactions in this thread I'm going to try and be more mindful of any disagreement that I may have with others here. I'm also going to try and be mindful of how I share any criticisms regarding the band. This doesn't mean praising everything, it means choosing the words of any criticisms with sensitivity.

I appreciate the music that these guys have shared with me over the years and I appreciate what it has meant for me. I appreciate that they are still putting themselves out there with every release and show.

I also appreciate that other fans, like me, come together to discuss our passion for this band and the music they have shared. It's great to connect with others who have a similar interest, even if it's only through a message board. I've gotten a lot out of this board over the years.

I'm going to try and make this my everyday philosophy here. I hope some of you consider doing the same.

Nice post.

The last time on late night to my knowledge was Heaven on Leno in August 2003. They could probably get on again given their history and connections. Would they really want to get on with these songs though?

Run Away on Leno in 2004

Lightning Crashes on Leno in 2004

Mystery on Idol in 2006

Forever on Ellen in 2008

There could be others.

I’d love to see Giver on late night TV. guitar.gif It would be way better than Heaven, for sure.

Good memory. I thought of Mystery on Idol, but didn’t think that would count.

Idol and Ellen are not late night, but whatever, still 14 years.

And just curious for the Giver lovers. Do you really think anyone can even hear the song over their laughter after “Like a little tiny baby in the womb”? I mean, seriously, can you really listen to that, the lyrical content, and the eunuch pitch, and not just fucking cringe at how insanely embarrassing it is? I’m asking honestly, because I truly can’t even imagine having any other reaction.

Oh please. You want to talk opening lyrics? How is that any different from

“Everybody’s here, puke stinks like beer.”
Or, “Let him come into the city, let him find his lucky penny” ??

Sure, let’s talk these opening lyrics.

Century has brilliant lyrics, with this line nicely setting up the juxtaposition of the existentialist (hey!) and the modernist.

The Distance has brilliant albeit less brilliant lyrics, with this line describing their rise to fame and setting up a similar juxtaposition.

Giver has absolutely shit lyrics, with this line containing a 3rd grade level simile, an intellectual disability level redundancy of adjectives, and no deeper meaning whatsoever.

If you can’t tell the difference in lyrical content between these, I’m truly shocked. When SS and TDTH came out, I would never have believed I’d ever see someone argue that the lyrics are comparable to “like a little tiny baby in the womb.” I guess the movie Idiocracy truly is becoming a documentary.

Not to mention the fact that Giver is sung at full eunuch pitch, which is just so sad for Ed, once one of the greatest voices in rock. I almost wonder if he’s malingering to cash in on an insurance policy he had on it?

In fairness, though, I have cherry picked the bad lyrics in Giver. Tomorrow I will post my interpretation of the brilliant “you know it takes 2 to tango?” Oh the complexities.

Is that a realistic platform for them at this point? Not a dig, I just genuinely don't know if they could book a show like that even if they wanted it.

Of course LIVE could play late night shows. I mean geez. The suggestion that they couldn't book a late night talk show is pretty ludicrous.

Hey wait, when were we comparing entire songs? You are still being holistic, I can tell. You were saying that no one would be able to listen past the opening line of Giver without bursting into laughter. Well compare that opening line to this or that one, and the typical late show viewer is not going to know the difference.

Any student of Līve’s knows that Ed’s creativity peaked in the 1990’s. Secret Samadhi although bizarre, was still genius. While TDTH had some flashes of brilliance, you have to admit things started going downhill with that album.

Idiocracy is expecting Local 717 to be profound as the 90’s. As I said to you earlier there’s still hope down the road for excellent Līve music, but the 1997 Ed is long gone.

With the exception of Waterfall (in my opinion), Local 717 is by no means excellent, but it is pretty good (especially considering their current work ethic). Sorry you can’t enjoy it for what it is.

I still look forward to reading your further interpretations.

These songs are tough to rank. I'd put Giver and Venus at the bottom.

I would say that if we're purely talking in terms of Ed, TDTH actually represents his peak. I think CT said something similar in his letter response, that if SS represented CCP's ideal sound for Live, then TDTH was Ed's.

There is a big difference in just the first lines.

There is nothing inherently offensive in Century or The Distance, but certainly the simile and redundant adjectives, let alone the huge disconnect between the jamming riff and the weak sauce lyrics, plague Giver.

And again, this is not to mention the fact that it’s sung in the pitch of a eunuch.

Can anyone honestly say that they weren’t jamming to the intro only to be totally taken aback by Ed. It honestly sounds like Nirvana, Foo Fighters or Smashing Pumpkins did a collaboration with a 50 year old woman who writes and sings the intros to cheesy family TV shows. Here’s this sweet jam, with lyrics and pitch by Betty Kowalczyk of Step by Step and Boy Meets World fame!

I realize the Ed of old is long gone, as has anyone who has heard any of his music or read any of his lyrics for the last 18 years.

But, does it have to be THIS bad? Is there not a middle ground?

10,000 Cups is a really, really great song, very reminiscent of when I think Live’s peak was between SS and TDTH before Ed unilaterally remade TDTH into a pop album, so I know it doesn’t. Please, for the love of god Live, release stuff like that.

But I don’t have much hope, because if Love Lounge and Giver are considered better than 10,000 Cups it shows you just how far their heads are up their asses.
