The situation is ridiculous. They could release the best song in the world - which "Be a Giver, Man" isn't - and 50 % on here would still hate it. Either because they actively want to hate it or even cognitive dissonance.

Nah everyone here is hoping to like the new music

Yea, I'm trying and hoping there is a song that connects with me again. One of these days I'll probably hand in my Live fan card.

Got TGF, Church box, and The Turn after I thought I was done with Live so maybe there is more in the pipeline.

I am so bummed it isn't on the EP. I loved how different it was. It's a damn good song!
I was lucky enough to hear it live from the third row of a theater and it sounded amazing. Different? Yes. Laid back? Some of it was. I thought it had the signature build up that a lot of great Live songs have. I will say this, I heard it twice and it got stuck in my head. I've never stopped wanting to hear it again. Can't say the same for either of these two singles. Really hoping the other three songs have more to offer. Love Lounge was very good live and I suspect Giver will be too. Kind of makes me wonder if a recorded studio version of 10,000 Cups would impress me as much as the live version did. I guess that's why they're called Live.

I’m pretty sure, maybe 90% 10000 cups was a working title hehe.gif

I like it better than Love Lounge. The intro guitar riff and drums make it worth listening to and I think it will be a cool song to see in concert. It's not bad and not great. They're never going to replicate the 90's magic. I just want a chance to see a real show in the US. Not some stripped down 13 song set with them opening for a piece of shit band like Counting Crows that we got stuck with this summer. They had some really great setlists overseas last year. It is time the US got some shows like that.

So they announced that they were writing and recording new music 2 years ago, and we are about to get a 5 song EP on which 1 song is a cover, the other song was written by Ed and his solo band guitarist (which I don’t like), and this song doesn’t even include Chad Gracey as the drummer? That follows on the heals of an under-attended tour as an opening act of shortened greatest hits sets with an extra drummer (I guess that 3 drummers who’ve played with the band now) and Ed’s solo guitarist. I may have had unrealistic expectations, but I thought that when they said they rediscovered their old writing process and had the old live back, that we would like - you know - get a song on which Chad Gracey plays drums. And the pop singer voice and lyrics packed with “like a little tiny baby” and “like a lotus in the mud” and the unfortunate fact that “believe” rhymes with receive, put this right in with BoP and SFBM for me. I’d hoped we would get some freaky anti-establishment uninterpretable universally spirituality lyrics, and the classic Live sound with a bass groove and Gracey’s drums. Taylor came up with a great riff but the song that got created around it doesn’t do much for me. I like it much better than Live Lounge, but I’d much rather listen to The Record Company or Rival Sons or Slash than Live now. I just don’t know what they’re thinking, but it isn’t anything that I want as a Live fan. And that makes me really really sad.

I understand your frustration and yes, Robin may be involved in both the writing and recording process, but no need to think Chad isn't there on the new music.

Even here the fake news has started.

Chad is clearly injured. There is no other possible explanation for the rotating drummers.

Omg u guyz! Chad Gracey played on the whole tour, and so did Diaz, he even did percussion while CG played drums! It must be a cover-up and CG can't play or cast a shadow or hide hiz lizzzzzzzarrrrrd tongue anymore. rolleyes.gif

Seriously, this is dumb. Percussion is not the same as drums. And if he was/is injured, and didn't play any drums at all on either song, so what? If he's not and they're bringing in extra musicians for fun, so what? Hopefully liner notes to the EP will clarify a bit.

I can sort of understand if it sounds different, but it's kinda their music to make. If he's injured and they found a way to accommodate, are folks going to shit on them for that too?

I was under the impression that the Janes Addiction drummer did the drums on this new song but if I was mistaken then I apologize. I am certainly not trying to spread fake news. And do not want to come across as hostile toward Live or anyone else. I love this band. So much so that from my perspective (and this is only my personal opinion) I just wanted to see and hear the 4 guys writing and recording and performing all the music without other musicians contributing, which was my point. The Jane’s addiction drummer is at least contributing percussion on this recording. And Zach was on Lopve Lounge. And another of the 5 tracks is a cover. That only leaves me with 2 remaining songs to hopefully hear something written, arranged, and performed by the 4 members of Live. I have been looking forward to seeing and hearing those four guys return to their origins and reigniting the old process and creativity to produce Live music the way only they know how to do.

I don't think you came across as hostile or anything. I do think this board has taken a sharp south today. Anyway, I could be wrong about Perkins role too, I'm going off the word choices in the Consequence of Sound article and watching the show a few weeks back.

I see nothing "south" for this board by saying the music sucks, or that it sucks the guys are bringing in other people.

Fish, I need to wait until you post because you lay everything out there a lot better. I think CG is playing on this track and the drummer from Jane's Addiction just plays on the bridge. Why just the bridge I have no idea, but I think that's what the article says.

CG hated the plexiglass. I'm sure he loves sharing the stage and studio with other drummers.

Maybe our insiders OTD and Nick can shed some light?

I love this band.

Yes!
I recently saw a meme that said, “I love music more than some people” and honestly thought that’s how I feel about Līve. They’ve been there with me through so much in my life. Also, they “left” me for a while, so as Hoodstock mentioned earlier about them actually making new music, something we never thought would happen (well, I did will Ed to come back smile.gif ), I am just so appreciative that they could bang some pots and pans together and strum some rubber bands and I think I’d be happy. So maybe I really am a little jaded.

Also, it’s funny reading two or three times in this thread that some of you guys don’t like the “rock n roll” part of Giver. I laugh, because it’s my favorite part. I was the same way with “shoot that fear” lol.gif

QUOTE(Merica @ Sep 28 2018, 12:43 pm) *

On the contrary, I'd argue that it's essential. And I'm not trying to be facetious there, sorry. I genuinely think that in this specific situation you simply have to take a critical look at Ed's contribution to the band's music; lyrics, vocals and all.

No need to be sorry. Although I don’t agree with it, I can see your reasoning for why you’re taking a critical look. I just still think that the whole band should be held accountable for things and not just Ed.
Lyrics schmyrics, as I’ve made known before, my beef is with the laziness of the band. As Fish said, 2 years and just an EP and no proper U.S. headlining tour is an issue.
