No the split in the fan base occurred during the messy initial split between Ed and CCP.
Shinn is inconsequential.

To you maybe, but it shed a light on some of the issues with Live. They continue to make bad decisions. Regardless, I'm sticking around to hear some old, unreleased tunes and maybe the cover song on 717 won't suck.

I'll say it again...In hindsight, Shinn and The Turn should've been a Gracious Few album. At least they could've collaborated again in the future.

Some are going to hate the new stuff and some will dig it and that's perfectly fine.

I loved The Turn. I think it is one of the finest Live albums. Calling Shinn inconsequential is ridiculous. It is possible to appreciate both the original 4 and Chris Shinn.

I somehow don't believe Ed when he says he'll never screw this up again. He's done a pretty good job of it here.

The guitars in this song and Love Lounge are good additions to the Live sound, but these lyrics are absolutely lackluster. It takes two to tango? Little tiny baby? Babies are small, that's just redundancy. I'm sure any of us could write better lyrics. Here's my take:

Like a rolling rock that gathers speed
Like suppressed soldiers in the mud we have a need
If just a blade of grass can find a way
Baby you know that we can only rise
We can sneak around this veil of ancient tears
Take a detour and join us for the minutes of our finest hours here

I believe no man is an island
It takes a damn more lot than that if you wanna rock & roll
And I'm never gonna bring you down
No, I swear I'll never screw this up again
Everybody's gotta hear me now the way ahead is finally crystal clear

I believe that what you give is what you receive
Oh yeah, oh I'll be a giver now
Be a giver, now...

Be a giver in your soul
Be a light where no one goes
Alone and free of fear
Be a giver

I believe that what you give is what you receive
Oh yeah, oh I'll be a giver now

This B effort took about 7 minutes, but it's better than the C effort of the real song. It's odd to think that the same person who wrote lightning crashes is behind this.

Side note - I rewrote it to be about Ed being a dick but ready to move on and rock. I heard some parts of this song that can be interpreted that way.

Sad but true. Your rewrite of the first line made the song better already IMO.

any chance you can add better vocals too?

I really don’t think being so critical of the lyrics of the new music is fair. All throughout Live’s career Ed’s lyrics have been a mix of pristine, average, out there, and subpar.

When I didn’t like Simple Creed I didn’t threaten to quit being a fan. shrug.gif

But to each his own.

On the contrary, I'd argue that it's essential. And I'm not trying to be facetious there, sorry. I genuinely think that in this specific situation you simply have to take a critical look at Ed's contribution to the band's music; lyrics, vocals and all.

The situation is ridiculous. They could release the best song in the world - which "Be a Giver, Man" isn't - and 50 % on here would still hate it. Either because they actively want to hate it or even cognitive dissonance.

Real talk: The music is alright at least, the lyrics are at least alright as well. The only line that irks me a bit is the "rock and roll" one.
To the one that complained that "tiny little baby" is redundant, because babies are already tiny: Well, I guess you are unfamiliar with stylistic devices in poetry then.

What I don't like - just as with Love Lounge: the production. The Turn's production really was better. I don't like what they are doing with Ed's voice. I don't like how they seem to think that the loudness war is still on.

QUOTE(draynoe @ Sep 28 2018, 9:22 am) *

For everyone saying you want to hear 10,000 cups, but also want 90's Live back, you do not need to hear 10,000 cups. It is nothing like 90's Live, or any other Live (even the new music). Let's just say it references dirty water and it is not 'Stage' ...

Just wanted to throw that out there. After hearing these 2 new songs, I'm assuming they abandoned it even for an LP because it is nothing close to Love Lounge or 'Giver' in terms of energy.

Now, if you like a laid back, almost blues type song and aren't looking for 90's Live, you may love it.

Just my 2... Anyone else that's heard it agree or disagree?

I am so bummed it isn't on the EP. I loved how different it was. It's a damn good song!
I was lucky enough to hear it live from the third row of a theater and it sounded amazing. Different? Yes. Laid back? Some of it was. I thought it had the signature build up that a lot of great Live songs have. I will say this, I heard it twice and it got stuck in my head. I've never stopped wanting to hear it again. Can't say the same for either of these two singles. Really hoping the other three songs have more to offer. Love Lounge was very good live and I suspect Giver will be too. Kind of makes me wonder if a recorded studio version of 10,000 Cups would impress me as much as the live version did. I guess that's why they're called Live.

As rare as it is to be a Live fan, none of us share the same opinion on Live's music or direction. Every song, album, and decision from the band splits the fanbase

Couple things:

- I've only had a chance to listen to Giver a few times through my phone speakers. So far I prefer Love Lounge out of the two

- I wish there was more depth to the sound. There is a lot going on in both songs but it seems to all get muddled into a wall of sound. I've always viewed Live as a concert band. To me they never seem to be able to fully capture the magic of their songs in studio.

- Maybe 10,000 Cups is getting released under a new title. Something like Crayons was. Those that heard it will have to let us know.

- There was a point where I thought Live would never release a new song again. There are a ton of bands where that is the case. I'm excited that Live is putting out new music again. I'll take it.
