Ed Q and A

You’ve done the acoustic “intimate” tours in recent years. Most of us hard core fans still absolutely love the mid-90s MTV Unplugged session. Any chance the whole band can do a smaller venue acoustic tour like that in the future?
thanks...that would be tons of fun..but we are having way too much destroying our hearing at the moment

do you plan to ever play anything off Death of a Dictionary or rerelease it? Mine is all tore up!
I still have a box of the cassettes! just can't find my tape deck
oh, and you never know...forest Gump quote about the box of chocolates comes to mind

Hey Ed! Hope all is well! You guys have been my favorite band since the age of 13! (1994 ish)
How’s about letting me get up and play a song with you? Haha.

OK

Hey, Eddie, I hope you are doing well! Q: TRUE OR FALSE? Dance With You is the most beautiful song written in the whole history of ever, and can bring about instantaneous understanding of the suffering in the world, all while evoking pure bliss.
I like to think that is TRUE! but the Rolling Stones "Angie" tho

Pat alluded to it yesterday but can you please say whether LIVE will make it to the UK this year or next?
Anything is possible, but I think it's more likely that we will get to London next year

Is there any chance of feel quiet river rage to be played on the this tour or a tour coming in the future. It one of my favorite song in the world
that would be super cool...keep you posted

As you've dug through older Live album deep cuts in preparation for gigs, have there been any "forgotten" tracks that you've really re-connected with spiritually/lyrically? Or is it safe to say that all of your writing remains "top of mind" to this day?
well, we aren't playing anything super deep in terms of older albums cuts...so everything is pretty "top of mind" as you put it...I feel like I've reconnected to the whole entire show in a new way tho, all the songs, since the band is back together

with "Throwing Copper" reaching the 25 year milestone next year, is there a chance you will tour, and play this amazing album in its entirety?.. Red Rocks / Colorado, maybe..
Red Rocks would be great...absolutely love playing there...and yeah, I'm sure we'll get up to something around the 25th of TC

Hi Ed,
Just wondering if you and the guys are as excited about the summer tour as your fans are? I’ll see you in Hershey!!!!

FUCK YEAH!!! sorry I shouted

How do you feel to finally be back with Live? I thought that hiatus would never end. Can't wait to see you in September, Cincinnati!
feels great! see you soon!

Hi Ed, Of all the Venues you have played at what has been your favorite?
And of what Venue that you haven’t played at yet would be your dream Venue to play at?
Thanks.

this music bowl spot in Melbourne on the last tour down there was amazing...got me thinking I'd like to play at the Hollywood Bowl someday..unless they reopen CBGB , then that goes to #1

G'day Ed, what would you say is one difference in your / band's approach to creating / writing new music today; compared to Throwing Copper, SS eras? Secondly if you could do an REM cover, what song would you chose?
Thanks Jerry lol.gif
Its basically the same, some riffs that become songs and then me brining songs that are mostly finished and we put our band stamp on 'em..Begin the Begin! REM

Welcome back!!! Saw you with +LIVE+ a few times and solo most recently. Will we get a new +LIVE+ record soon???
new song coming ahead of summer tour, EP to follow

how’s the set list shaping up? And I can’t wait to see you at the NY State fair.
still working on set list...at least one new one will be in there...any ideas?

What type of music are your kids into, does Dad influence them with their choices?
Ana is a huge Bowie fan,Natasha loves Led Zeppelin, so dad's VERY happy! the little ones, well, the soundtrack to sponge bob squarepants is always amazing..I gotta agree with them on that...I'm sure they will get lots of pointers from me and their big sisters!

Ed what happened to your acting career after Fight Club?
hit the skids bro...but I'll be back

Ed, what's your favorite song to perform live??? And have been mistaken for Andrea Agassi?? lol
I like to play "The Distance" a lot...and yes, been mistaken for him a ton of times...I actually had this guy in Hawaii give me a ton of free crafts he was making cuz he thought I was Agassi...I kept telling him I wasn't him, but he wouldn't believe it..so I took the stuff and gave it to my kids, thanks dude!

Hi Ed! We will see you September 1 in cincy!!! Play hero psycho dreamer? Please?
haha, maybe..haven't done that song in 20 years..would be fun!

Not a question:Thanks for the incredible songs.
thank you !

Hey Ed!!!!!! Will there be a new Live album
yep, new song coming ahead of summer tour, then EP to follow this year...LP um following that? I'm confused

What is your favorite hometown show to play?
Hershey, The Strand, Musikfest, etc.
like playing in Hershey..always great

When are you guys coming to Europe?
Next year full Europe thing I think

Saw you at Rock on the Range in 2017. Your voice is still in pristine shape, what is your secret?
a little Jack Daniels before, a little more during the show, and a lot more after

What’s the hardest LIVE song to sing
hmmm...none of em really..but dolphin's cry can be a bitch after a few shows in a row

How great is it to be BACK???
FUCKIN GREAT!

Where fishes go yes or no
si señor

Ed. Feel like grabbing a couple beers?
As long as it ain't miller light...I'm in!

Any chance of adding more Canadian dates? Toronto is too far for me...... missed you on one of your solo dates and have kicked myself since!
I'm sure we'll get around to more Canadian towns next year

Chad G Q and A

Do you still keep in touch with the guy that used to run your fan site? I won an autographed drum stick and a copy of DoaD way back in 97/98. Best album. Love it!
Yes I still occasionally speak to Greg.

Hey chad, what’s the most demanding live song for you to play live. Always a huge fan of your style!
Iris and White D

Lots of different great opening songs throughout the years including, The Damn at Otter Creek, Rattlesnake, All Over You, and Where Fishes Go. Which is your favorite all time intro?
Damn at Otter Creek. I love that way it starts quiet and is fucking off the chain by the end.

How is your mom doing? After meeting you at west York athletic club, I used to run into her occasionally. Haven't seen her in a while?
She is great. Thanks Steve!

What’s your favorite song, as a drummer, to play in concert?
White D and Iris.

Hey Chad, hello from the U.K.! How come you never seem to age???
Ha! Thanks Spencer. Lots of vitamins!

What’s the craziest thing a fan has ever done to you?
Message me on FB....😂😜

what's up brother ! What's your favorite memory from working at Falloons ?
Removing cases of beer and liquor from the basement into your house next door. Notice I did not say" steal" 😂

If you were in the zombie apocalypse, how would you survive?
I would hook up with Rick!

Will where fishes go get added on to your setlist and also what is your favorite song to play
That would be cool but its been a long time.

Chad, what is your favorite, "b-side" from Secret Samadhi?
I'd have to listen to them to remember but I do like Mallrat.

Hey Chad who (musicians) were your biggest influences / inspired you musically as a drummer, growing up? Secondly,Tool's Danny Carey is my favourite drummer, who is yours?
U2 and Larry Mullens Jr. Favorite young drummer. Ben Thatcher. Dave Grohl, Matt Cameron, John Bonham.

What are you guys going to do with the property in Reading Pennsylvania that you purchased a few years back?
We no longer own that property.

Hey Chad!!! Not a love related question but I am curious as to if we are going to hear a new gracious few album?? Ohh and see you in Toronto this summer
One never knows if this will happen...

Hey Chad... What snare(s) did you use on Mental Jewelry and Throwing Copper? Anything interesting you may remember about tracking those records? Such an amazing drum sound, great production... Huge fan! TC and MJ were my first ever Cd's as a toddler... Thank you for influencing me to play drums and produce!!
I was using Pearl free floating piccolo snares back then. I have a maple and a brass!. Thanks Mike!

Is there any chance of playing a tour in Germany 🇩🇪? Not only Festivals in Netherlands or Belgium... please
Probably in '19

Hi! Thanks for doing this. I love your drumming in all songs but the drums in All Over You really get me pumped up. That has been the opening song almost every time of seen you which has been many times. How do you decide on an order for the setlist?
Its a great opener because it get going right out the box! Usually CT picks the sets

Hi ChadG - how did you come up with your drums in Selling The Drama? (Can I also ask the same about All I Hear) You're the only drummer on my Best Drummer list - none of the others can even come close to reaching you.
Thank you Angela. My parts come when I get a sense of what the guitar and melody is doing in the song. Then I weave it in there.

I hope your arm is better! I saw you guys last year at Arroyo Seco. Cant wait until you come back to Calif this summer! So happy you guys are back together!!!
Thanks Debbie. My arm is all healed now.

Hey!! 😁 As I'm sure you remember Bluesfest in Ottawa last summer getting rained out. Are there any immediate future plans to come back to Ottawa. Not necessarily a festival, but even a private show or something? Thanks!
Yeah. That was a bummer. No plasn as of now but we will for sure be back to Ottawa at some point.

How were your experiences in shows in Brazil? Do you want to go back one day? Can we dream about this possibility? Thanks for ALL 🇧🇷
Brazil is always amazing and yes we want to go back but not sure when at the moment

Great to see you guys back together. Will you be doing meet and greet when you come back to the UK. We need you back here 😎😎😎
Thanks Lee. We always do meet and greets so yes sir!

Did you guys ever think to yourself “Two Chads in one band? That’s crazy!!”
HA! We are so used to it now but it is funny.

Is Live going on another tour after the tour with the counting crows?
Not is the states but we will tour in 19.

Have you played a “hometown” show in York since you reunited? Any plans to?
We played NYE 2017 but that was a private show.

Saw you when you opened for Guns n’ Roses in Winston Salem. You guys are awesome!
Thanks Benjamin. That was a great run!

You are awesome, the best drummer...
Wow! Thank you Déde!

Chad. Would you like to grab some beers with me and the gf when you are in York?
Joe. One never knows what will happen in York, PA!

When can we expect new material?
We are working on stuff.

What won’t the greatest of teachers hesistate to do?
I beat things for a living. The word guy was on yesterday...

Any plans of a solo tour after this one?
Drums Alone coming to a city near you...

Do you still have all of your sets from past tours?
I do. They are in storage in York.

Am I allowed to ask - why were you in your undies in that photo Patrick posted on IG lol
It was after the show and I had just changed out of my wet stage clothes.

How much practice does it take to remember how to play a song ie if you guys were to unexpectedly play a song not on the setlist?
Most of the songs we could probably figure our way through on the spot but otherwise a couple of full passes and we usually get it.
So this might sound crazy, but back in 1993 yous guys did a show at the TLA in Philly, me and several of my friends attended and after the show ran into one of the Chads across the street from the venue getting food or drinks, he was really awesome and signed a bunch of shit for my girlfriend, was that by chance you? I for the life of me can't remember which one it was, my memory for events is awesome, names not so good.

George I can barely remember what I ate yesterday....

Bill Hynes How do you change the Kangen filters ? 😂
Remove the black cover, twist the ring at the bottom of filter clockwise and remove. Make sure you seat the o-rings when replacing!

Hey CG! Drink any good red recently?
HA. No but Im always down!

Other favorite drummer(s)?
Matt Cameron, Dave Krusen, John Bonham, Larry Mullens Jr. Ben Thatcher and or course my man Dave Grohl!

42 shows is a lot for the band. They haven't embarked on a tour like this in quite some time.

Poor babies.

Mötley Crüe did 116 plus shows for their reunion tour, Carnival of Sins, in 2005.
Then they kept it going for round two in 2006.

Chad T Q and A

Wish I could ask u a question but no one ever responds. But live is my fav band
I'm relying right now!
repying

Jimmy Lang - The distance between two towns is 380 km. At the same moment, a passenger car and a truck start moving towards each other from different towns. They meet 4 hours later. If the car drives 5 km/hr faster than the truck, what are their speeds?
huh?
You win the internet!

What is the bands thoughts on the change of words in operation spirit and selling the drama? Does the fact that the members have different faiths ever cause conflict?
Okay, okay...in fact, the words mean new things over time. they change as we grow older and experience new things.

Are you guys gonna come up to Canada? We need to hear some old cuts from Mental Jewelry up here in southern Alberta!!! I love your playing - NEED to see you guys perform! So much spirit. Thanks for being an inspiration!
I have many great memories of Canada! I've made lots of friends up there and can't wait to return.

My four year old has a Starwars guitar and loves it. What got you into playing the guitar and how old were you?
10-years old

Hey Chad proud york city resident here! I wanted to know now that they parking garage across from the Yorktowne hotel has been remodeled does this mean we'll never hear you guys preform shit towne again?
gotta live...

Hi CT,
What’s your favorite song to play on stage? I always really enjoy to see you perform Lakini’s juice ?? but I’m curious for your answer...
I’m sorry that I will be missing your performance at Bospop in july. Hope I’ll manage to get tickets for your European Tour in 2019. ??
Have a great day!

White, Discussion...although, I've been loving The Distance too

Chad, can you all please come down to El Paso, TX? We're a big rocking city with lots of love for bands like Live, Filter, and more!
Sounds great! i love me some TX!

Your tour with Counting Crows this summer .. are you guys doing new stuff or mixing in some older albums?
I'm looking forward to new songs! but yes, we'll play lots of hits too.

Super excited to see you guys play Hershey on Aug 10th! I'll be in the 3rd row!! It also happens to be my first wedding anniversary that day. Any chance Dance With You is on the setlist??
Hmmm....not sure about that. I'll have to call the boys in the band.

Hi Chad! So happy you guys are back together!! How do we find out about meet and greets for the tour this summer?
There are no package m&g this summer as far as I know. LIVE always tries to find our fans anyway!

Third times a charm! Are you going to headline Hershey since you’ll be back home? You guys were my first solo concert at Hershey when I was 16!
That's not really up to me...I just play the guitar!

Hi Chad! Hope you are doing well. I love that you guys make a point to support nonprofit organizations that do such amazing work. Do you ever get tired of being so awesome? ?? also, if you are still working on the set list for this summer, this is my official vote for FLOW. ????
Setlist: yes, Ed and I are talking about what songs to play. Last year, we focused on some of the early tunes but right now, I'm excited new songs!

I would still love to record a track at Think Loud Studios before I die/the Earth explodes, haha. Is the studio accepting paying customers this year?
Also, do you ever listen back on The Death of a Dictionary? Dropping Saviour for a Day or Ball and Chain into a setlist would freak the Freaks out big time!!

thinkloudstudios.com

G’day CT,
(Thought I’d go deep with the questions, bare with me haha)
You’ve mentioned (2010) that whilst touring London for Songs From Black Mountain you had dinner with Metallica and in particular had a pretty deep and meaningful with Lars Ulrich.
“Metallica had just released “Some Kind Of Monster” and I was fascinated by his willingness to break up his own band in order save their integrity. As we got deeper into the bottle, so did our discussions about my personal discord within my band. Lars told me I had no choice. The only way to save Live was to abort the mission and leave the band. My head was spinning.”
Q: Have you had a chance to speak to Lars since +LIVE+ has reconnected with Ed, and talk about this night. If not would you like to speak with Lars one day again as a follow up?
Looking back now you must’ve had a lot of respect for Lars, to tell it like it is, despite your head spinning. It would seem in (2018) hindsight it was a masterstroke to ultimately disband (despite going though immense heartache, pain, anger) as it’s honestly helped you find your childhood chemistry / magical spark with again Ed, would you agree?
Secondly I asked Ed in his Q&A what was his favourite REM song and he said “Begin The Begin” and looking at my notes that I’ve kept you’ve mentioned your first ever recording as a band (aged 15) was 1986 a session with engineer Mike Couch recording: Pretty In Pink (Psychedelic Furs), Begin The Begin (R.E.M.) and Boys Don’t Cry (The Cure).
Q: What was it about REM that really struck a cord with the band into doing a cover at age 15? Would you ever consider doing an REM cover in your live set to honour them and the influence they’ve had on you over 3 decades? I’d love to hear +LIVE+ do a cover of “The Great Beyond” one day.
It’s a wonderful thing to see +LIVE+ back and sounding better than ever. Speaking from personal experience your USA fans are in for a REAL treat with the CC tour; I hope they really get behind you and get along to a show. 70 mins is still going to provide fans with a kick arse performance!
Can’t wait to hear the new music CT, ROCK ON! ??

No, I've seen Lars since the band reformed BUT I did hang with Dave Grohl (who was also there) and told him the entire story over several rounds of drinks!

i cant wait for the new album, how would you compare it to other also any sneaky clips for us anxious fans
So Ed and I got drunk and posted a tune a few weeks back...then the higher powers pulled it down! We love being sent to the principles office

Hi Chad! So excited for the tour and the Q&A opportunity! I have really enjoyed seeing you interact with Zak on stage during The Distance...are you enjoying having Zak (and Robin) with you and what to they add to the band? So happy LIVE is together again. What a lesson for us all about friendship & forgiveness! Can’t wait to see you guys in Tampa, WPB and Jax!!! PS...is there any chance I can get a ThinkLoud studio tour when I’m in PA? ??
Yes, having Zak and Robin has added an entirely new dynamic to the band. It's been incredible! We've been having so much fun and really isn't that the point of being in a rock band - FUN!!

What is a “must have” for you after a gig? Be it food or drink.
Whiskey

What music do your kids like listening to and have they been influenced by your tastes?
My daughters love music...I got huge props for taking them to Lollapalooza last year! Like all kids their tastes are a bit younger than mine BUT I did have Delilah rocking out to Whole Lotta Love just yesterday morning.

Hi Chad, where does that energy come from SMH
coffee, booze, etc

What is the one piece of guitar gear you couldn't live without?
Ruby Lou Jazzmaster

Favorite alias name at a hotel you have used?

All alias' have been anagrams - with secret meanings

Do you have plans to play on the Tonight show or the like? Is that something you all enjoy doing?
Television is always a rush...who knows when that will happen.

Will you all release a deluxe remastered edition of Throwing Copper anytime soon?
good idea

If you guys could cover one Led Zeppelin song , which would it be?
Greta Van Fleet seems to have this covered! And yes, I like this band!!!

If you weren’t a guitar player, what would you do?
We'll I'm so thankful to have invested in my local community in York....we have tons of amazing employees and friends who work for our various companies...AND most important is being a dad!

Hey, Chad. Big fan of your’s and Live’s! What’s your fave boutique amp?
Diaz CD-100 and I just purchased the new Fender high wattage Twin (Joe Bonamassa)

Greatest gig you have ever played? Woodstock ?
Definitely not Woodstock...how about our very first show in an areana...George Dome - thanks Atlanta!

Hi Chad. Will there ever be a 2nd Gracious Few album?
I loved it so much!

For now, I can barely handle keeping up with LIVE but ya never know.

Any idea on possible release date for the dvd?
hmmm....don't know about this.

Chad, who were your biggest influences? Looking forward to seeing you this summer!!
I would say that entire scene at CBGB's - Television, Ramones, Talking Heads, and on and on. There is a spirit in this music that is missing today AND we're going to jump on bring that rock n roll back.

If you could play one gig in another band, who would it be?
Rolling Stones

Five favorite countries to tour?
how do you pick a favorite?

Who are these higher powers that forced the new clip to come down? Live have been talking on and on about how they don't have to answer to anybody and that they will release music at their leisure.

Whoever is in charge of marketing their new music? They're probably on some sort of label, I doubt their album is coming from Bandcamp, anyway.
