iTunes picked this song up as the same version I already had in their cloud.

Funny (or sad) how we all hope that this is a new re-record of Hold Me Up. Pretty certain this sound is long gone, but threads like this will continue to peak my curiosity.

I wish it was a current recording, because Ed sounds great.

The beginning part sounds like recent Ed, but when the instruments really kick in, it sounds like old production like someone else said.

To say I was stunned when I hit play and Hold Me Up started playing was an understatement.

Fucking hell, I bet you were. As if you've gone years routinely searching Youtube and then hit upon this. Amazing. Thanks so much.

This is the same performance of the one that has been floating around. It plays slower, and is a bit cleaner transfer, but its the same recording. The "remaster" you might be referring to is probably the one I did and uploaded a few years ago. It's just a tweak of the EQ and filter with a couple compressors.

I don't think this new MP3 plays at the intended speed, but I actually like it a bit slower

Yeah, I'll tweak the new Hold Me Up and Susquehanna files tonight. I think I can definitely give them both a little more punch. Wish I had lossless copies to work with.

Did a simple resample. Time from 3:04 sped up to 2:53 + pitch shifted higher.

That sounds a closer to the actual speed. I think these recordings can be cleaned up and enhanced, and I plan on working on them tonight. I may actually do it at both speeds because I like the slightly slower take

All the other MP3s in the player sound right. I don't think it makes sense for this one track to be playing at the wrong / unintended speed. Must've been an intentional decision. Otherwise it's just super weird.

Valid point if we assume they were all from the same source. They're MP3's hosted in a web player, and I hear different amount of tape hiss, levels, etc. across the various songs. For example, I Alone is pretty darn clean, and has much better compression than Dreams. My guess is that these are from various tapes during the recording of TC. I doubt that Media Five digitized them all off of a single source. Who knows if Media Five actually did the digitization for all of these. The band could have supplied them with various files.

Without any details, we can speculate until the cows come home. What I'm hearing on Hold Me Up and Susquehanna leads me to believe its just a different transfer of the same studio takes that we heard for years.

Wrong. Just have to read the thread

You still haven't identified "the thread" or said what "the tape" is. All I see is discussion over the tracks provided in the Media Five web player.

My gut feeling is that these are the same take we have always heard. I changed my mind from thinking this earlier in this thread, but i am going back to my original opinion - these are definetely the same original take, just better quality copies.

Notice the difference in the production of the drum

https://soundcloud.com/freaks-talking/hold-me-up

I feel bad for Jerry Harrison, who after tirelessly adjusting the space, reverb, and levels on the final mix, doesn't even get recognized by some of Live's biggest fans. Some can't tell the difference between his masterful production and the early demo...

who claim these careful edits must have been created by a "tape transfer"....

Barring an official release, that's all I wanted.
