This is driving me fucking nuts. Ive been playing this version side by side with the older one, pausing one after each line and playing the other...and I'm coming to the conclusion that I'm wrong about everything, that they are indeed both the same performance but the pacing has duped me. I don't like being wrong uhoh.gif

It's funny how tempo/pitch can change the dynamics of a song. In this newest version, Ed sounds so much sadder in the delivery, especially in the versus. Or maybe not sadder but more serious and thoughtful as opposed to the light-hearted vibe of the other version. It doesn't make one better than the other, but just changes the energy of the track and I guess that just speaks to what a fantastic song it really is. I think I can say it is my favourite Live song for this reason, that and the holy-grail nature of it in fan terms. I will stop obsessing and just enjoy it I think. And probably stop listening to it 50 times a day

When you say the "older one", do you mean the one that appears on the TC demo tape? Or the "Attempted Remaster" that someone did? (Or is that one and the same too. I should go listen. Hm.)

We're not talking about the attempted remaster. Nice that a fan would play around with it, but that is just a tweaking of the TC demo tape. When WAM says older one, he means the TC demo.

As far as I can tell, we have 4 versions.

Media Five tape
TC Demo
Clip from Zack and Miri
Clip from Mallrats

And I think the vocals are all the same, but the tracks are all edited differently. But I also believe its very possible that the Media Five demo might be the final version.

I'm hearing 'hopes' at the start and 'horror' at the end. Can't even make a guess at the last one.

Thanks. To me the first one is hard (hold, holds, clothes, hole) can't make it out.

Second one sounds more like horse or whores to me. can't tell.

In this video the last one is definitely "good" and I also kind of hear that in the studio version.

And in this video Ed goes changing the lyrics,

your silent (one) ???

So glad he dropped that "Zedd" nonsense, that was so incredibly bad. Nobody was going to listen to anything he had to say if he kept that crap up.

I don't even know what I mean anymore. what bremang said I think.

I've always heard and still do hear the line at the end as "would do us good today", but Ed is just singing it as "would do us g'haad today", likely with that crazy throwing copper face of his.

And I've always heard it as "your metaphors, your silent calls", but now I'm hearing "silent hauls", whatever the fuck that would mean. And in one of those youtube clips above I'm hearing "silent wars", which kinda makes sense but I just don't hear it in the studio version.

Wouldn't Ed be the appropriate person to ask? Chad has said in the past that he doesn't even know some of the lyrics to Live's songs.

iTunes picked this song up as the same version I already had in their cloud.

Funny (or sad) how we all hope that this is a new re-record of Hold Me Up. Pretty certain this sound is long gone, but threads like this will continue to peak my curiosity.

I was just under the impression Ed doesn't talk to other human beings.
