i don't remember all that much talk about the powder. definitely way more criticism for other reasons.

I'd go back and look it up but, to be honest, no one here is worth the trouble.

So solid in concert that CCP wanted to basically murder Chris Shinn after his performance at the Anaheim show. Check out the review on ticketmaster.

This famous Anaheim show...even fans of Shinn admitted this was a bad one...he lost a good friend a couple of days before the show. What if the same happened to Ed? Would you be a little more forgiving?

Maybe a new version of Whitediscussion.com will start back up soon. Then you can be reunited with all your like-minded buddies.

QUOTE(Gagball @ Dec 6 2016, 10:44 am) *

I remember reading/seeing an interview with Pat 10+ years ago where he was asked about his transition from his early "slap" style bass-playing to a more traditional style and he said something to the effect of "every fool thinks he can slap" as a reason he got away from it. I don't know anything about playing bass, but maybe "slap" style bass playing is kinda looked down upon by pro bassists (unless you're a master like Flea/Claypool or something). Slap is very distinctive and pronounced, but maybe it's a style that's also limited technically or sonically in some way. Please correct me with a swiftness if I'm off-base (heh) about any of this.

Again, I am totally speculating about what he meant by it, but I always remembered that comment from Pat (if not where I heard/saw it) because I've always loved and missed his funky bass-lines from DOAD and Mental Jewelry. The bass in "Hands of a Teacher" never fails to get my dork-ass up and shakin' it. :-)

Does that quote/paraphrase from Pat ring a bell with anyone else or does anyone else have a better explanation of what he might have meant by that?

Jon

I found the interview I semi-recalled on an old archived Geocities site. Here's what Pat said about the way his bass style changed in the early years:

QUOTE
SOY: Who are your influences? What bass players if any do you feel make you the bassist you are now?

PATRICK:Early on my biggest influence was my first instructor Don Carn, who has become a friend. He turned me on to his own style of thumin' the bass. Other players I really admire are Bootsy Collins, John Entwistle of The Who, and Flea.

SOY: Patrick, on "Mental Jewelry" it seemed that every bass line was deeply funky. What happened to all the popping stuff?

PATRICK: On the last record the songwriting developed to a point where I didn't need to take up as much space, sonically and I found that simple lines worked around the material much better. Besides - everyone thinks they can slap!!

Anyway, sorry to dredge up and quote my own comment, it just kept bugging me that I couldn't find this interview. Here's to hoping Pat breaks out a little funk on some new material!

Edit: Just wanted to highlight the way I added some sass that that quote in my original recollection of it. Heheh.

I always preferred Pat's basswork in TC to MJ. I don't mind the slap style, but I think his finger style is much more refined. Stuff like TBD and Pillar of Davidson stands out as fantastic bass playing to me.

EDIT: And Iris... how could I forget Iris.

Same...slap style is great, but the song has to demand it. And every song can't be a slap bass style song. That being said it's a shame he didn't break it out more often after MJ

Hi Everyone,
Just trying to catch up, but I'm a bit confused. Please forgive me if this was already covered/talked about. But based on vagueness (as typical as it may seem), I'm not clear on whether or not Ed is back 'for good' or not. When I hear 'reunion', it doesnt necessarily say that it's a permanent venture. More like, just for the tour...and then that's it. But when they start talking about recording and doing things slow, it makes is seem like ok, they are testing the waters. So I guess I'm answering my own question, but is Ed truly 'back'?

Also, has there been any word from Shinn on his feelings on this?

Thanks Guys!

Yes, Ed is back for good. Live has been recording new music and are planning a world tour for 2017.
