omg.gif What?! Worst song? More like, Simple Creed!

Paper Flowers is in my top 20 favorite Live playlist.

This is not surprising. At least Simple Creed doesn't lull one to sleep. It's practically a Coldplay song in that respect.

Really? Simple Creed comes across as so corny to me. "Back up fool, bet you took a gun to school"; "puppy scruff". eh.gif

Paper Flowers is a sweet song. You also have to admit, "She wears big black boots, get out of the way, she wants to kick tomorrow & punch yesterday" is a cool lyric.

Oh come on, even back then they had to have songs for the chicks.

Let's see, pretty awful would be..."Angel, don't you have some bagels in my oven."

It would be so cool if they just did a surprise drop of an entire new album or EP of kick ass sounding Live music at the end of the year or early next year. Maybe just drop it online for free with a voluntary donation like Radiohead did a few years ago. Nobody would be expecting it and even fewer would expect it to be awesome. Then take the world by storm!

I don't think we will be getting a studio album anytime soon. I could see some sort of release, but not a new studio album next year.

Paper Flowers has a dope baseline. I would love to hear a studio-quality recording of DOAD, but that needed to be done almost 30 years ago.

I'm still hoping we can agree to destroy any material or reference to anything even remotely associated with SFBM. And then MIB neuralize ourselves once the cleansing is complete.

No that's completely awful. Maybe the worst lyric in the whole catalog.

The bass work is excellent, I'll admit that. A lot of great bass lines in early Live, not really sure why Pat's style changed as much as it did.

I've stated before, i think 2018 will be the year for a new studio album, not 2017 as some seem to hope. I would like them to release a complete rarities collection personally. In reality they are probably gonna do something with SS first, i would say.

I remember reading/seeing an interview with Pat 10+ years ago where he was asked about his transition from his early "slap" style bass-playing to a more traditional style and he said something to the effect of "every fool thinks he can slap" as a reason he got away from it. I don't know anything about playing bass, but maybe "slap" style bass playing is kinda looked down upon by pro bassists (unless you're a master like Flea/Claypool or something). Slap is very distinctive and pronounced, but maybe it's a style that's also limited technically or sonically in some way. Please correct me with a swiftness if I'm off-base (heh) about any of this.

Again, I am totally speculating about what he meant by it, but I always remembered that comment from Pat (if not where I heard/saw it) because I've always loved and missed his funky bass-lines from DOAD and Mental Jewelry. The bass in "Hands of a Teacher" never fails to get my dork-ass up and shakin' it. :-)

Does that quote/paraphrase from Pat ring a bell with anyone else or does anyone else have a better explanation of what he might have meant by that?

Jon

As someone who plays bass, all I can say is the MJ era bass lines were inspiring. Thereafter they became much less interesting. Not to say he wasn't still a great bass player, but something that was once there was missing.
