That Ed Dolphin's Cry was painful. Chris' wasn't his best performance, he got better at that song later in his run with Live. That mini acoustic show was pretty bad all together though. From the whole band too. Especially whenever CT tried to sing because his mic was up way too high and he's an awful singer. But BOG from that show was great.

But Ed's, it just makes me cringe. the "ooo00oO0o0oo" shit at the start and just that whole facade of trying way too hard. Desperately wishes he was 20 years younger and on American Idol. This is the sort of Ed I'm worried about coming back to the band because I don't think CCP can carry him sounding like that.

People were trashing whatever new lead singer Live were going to announce before they even announced shinn, so more sad than funny.

This is why I'm trying to keep an open mind about Ed coming back (if indeed that is what is happening of course). My lust for quality material is greater than my desire to dictate what is good or bad, right or wrong for the band's direction. I know I shoot myself in the foot when I voice my fears about Ed not changing and further fucking up Live's memory, but I'm still the eternal optimist. I really am rooting for this to work. If that's what they are doing...

what the fuck are they doing??

Replacement singers are rarely accepted by the majority of fans.

Which is a shame. I love Chris and the only reason I was happy that CCP kept on without Ed was because I didn't like what Ed had become and what he was doing to the band. I love The Turn and still listen to it to this day.

Now if Ed's got his head out of his... bottocks... and is ready to rock on as a part of Live and not as Ed with Live as a backing band, then I surely prefer that, simply because he's a founding member of the band and, frankly, I prefer his lyrics (pre-V) than Shinn's. I have nothing against Shinn's lyrics mind you, it's a simple preference.

being closed minded makes new things difficult to give an honest chance

i gave shinn an honest listen. he was great. i still listen to live albums. ill still give ed an honest listen if he comes back.

some folks shorted themselves a nice album with some killer songs because they decided ahead of time they weren't going to like it.

if u have kids im sure you tell them all the time "try it, you may like it"

I could not get past that part of Chris's performance either. Whoever was running the board that day wasn't listening.

I still feel that CCP are as much to blame for that happening as Ed was. You never lose control of your band, you never compromise yourself like that, especially not after 20 years.

I agree, but the folks on this site often make it wound like its all Ed's fault and that CCP just got screwed by it. Its just not the case, Ed had a vision of what he wanted to do, they went along with it, and it was not great.

If it was great, I bet a lot of people, even possibly CCP themselves, would have a different story.

I voted for Chris Shinn, purely because The Turn is the best album this side of The Distance to Here. And we have no evidence that Ed is capable of making good music anymore. In fact we have close to 20 years of evidence to the contrary.

As has been pointed out before: Old Ed > Chris > New Ed. Our best chance of getting good new music is if Ed largely does as he's told whilst trying hard to do an impression of his old self.

Also, just to be clear: anybody trying to state that Chris is objectively a bad singer is clearly drenched in bias and shouldn't be taken seriously. The idea that he can't sing is a non-starter any way you want to look at it. Now if you want to say you just don't like him / his voice or can't get on board with him because you're too attached to Ed as the voice of Live, then fine. But that's a different thing.

And I know the conversation has moved on, but that thing about the eyes needing to be open. I assume most people will have laughed and instantly dismissed it like the garbage it is. But if not, just go back to MTV Unplugged where Live gave what is pretty much universally accepted as the definitive performance of Lightning Crashes. And that's the end of that.

What a stupid poll. This isn't 2012 anymore.

I agree with this statement 1000%. This isn't even a debate.
