From Starpulse:

Check Out Live's "Songs From Black Mountain," Out Today
The latest disc from rock quartet Live, "Songs from Black Mountain," hits stores today. The album marks a bit of a return to the more catchier, melodic material they became known for prior to their two previous, somewhat lackluster, albums.

But if you're looking for the "old" Live (singer Ed Kowalczyk, guitarist Chad Taylor, bassist Patrick Dahlheimer and drummer Chad Gracey) a la "Mental Jewelry," "Throwing Copper" and "Secret Samadhi" you won't find it here. The band has all but dropped it's angry, political ranting in favor of sunnier lyrics. That's not to say it isn't bad. The band has simply matured even more and claim that "Songs from Black Mountain" marks a "new beginning."

Releasing a "Best Of" retrospective marked the end of the band's first chapter; and signing with a new label is the beginning of something new for them. Now grown up and married with children, naturally the focus has shifted inward instead of outward: there's a bit more of a love theme to this one.

Key tracks:
Good: "The River," Better: "Mystery," Best: "Wings." Worth picking up: Yes. Grade: B+

Anyone else surprised that a majority of the American reviews have actually been positive? I was serious expecting an absolute hailstorm of negativity in the U.S. reviews.

Of course, most of the publications these are coming from I have never heard of. I'll be curious to see what Rolling Stone, Blender, the LA and NY Times, etc. have to say.

QUOTE(sandkind @ Jun 5 2006, 8:57 pm) *

sorry, he is just way too political for me. i actually do like some early u2, but i have not liked anything they've put out in years. but that's just me, you certainly have a right to your opinion and i respect that.

First four albums = excellent - everything including and since The Joshua Tree = bollocks. Maybe I'm missing the point of U2?

I found this album review that I thought everyone would enjoy reading. I don't agree that Live is "soft rock", but he does make some good points. Enjoy:

I really thought he was going to give it at least 3 skulls for a second there.

If you all want to see my review, click the link in my signature, as I'm not allowed to repost it anywhere.

Just don't read the other two reviews on that site, because they're rather scathing.

beau99, Just a heads up...

In your review you mention that Black Mountain is in York, PA. It is not. Ed has mentioned in several interviews it is near his home in California. The only thing close to a big, bad hill here in York County is the garbage dump. Don't get me wrong, it is a very tall mound, but I don't think it would inspire anyone to write songs about it.

Ha ha! I wonder what constitutes a rating system based on a skull??

Yeah - no kidding! It sounded like he basically LIKED the CD...but he still only gave it a 2. So, does his skull-scale go negative when he really hates something?

Other than that, I did enjoy the review...I think a lot of Live fans can relate to his sentiments/experiences.

But still…a TWO?!?!?! C'mon now…angry.gif

ACK...

I read somewhere it was in PA. Oh well, I'll fix the error.

It's good to finally hear a positive review. Too bad allmusic.com rates SFBM, Mental Jewelry, and V higher than TDTH though - that's a crock.

Tell me about it. I don't even know how V got a rating. Although I would probably rate MJ just behind TDTH. TDTH mis probably their most complete effort to date and a great cd although my third favorite.

Clearly the wrong tracklisting. But that isn't a review, it's just the press release for the album. He didn't write it. A media relations person at Epic did.

rocksound gave them 5/10. They called the album songs from brokeback mountain and compared the album to counting crows..
