Live and Commercial Success - Does it Matter? Options

It's different in the states. The only SINGLE ... as in ONE song ... that was released from that entire wonderful album was The Dolphin's Cry. Run To The Water I think was out for about a week ... if that ... maybe. Radio in the states, and specifically in NY is absolutely horrible.

I agree!! 100%. Rock radio is terrible now in NYC even more that we've lost KROCK to a talk radio format. They were the only station in NYC where I heard Live's older, harder stuff played regularly. PLJ plays live rarely and when they do they play Heaven. Now that's all I'm stuck with at work. Bye Bye rock music.

bat your eyes a few times at the DJ and maybe he will play some LIVE, ha. They only play harder rock, but that will get you through your workdays...

I thought he simply met Dre, gave him a copy of Awake, and had a conversation that left him optimistic. I don't think anything was ever "supposed" to happen.

... and commercial success at the moment, for the audience they are trying to hit, is embarrassing. Do we really need another Santana album with Michelle Branch? Do we really need another Goo Goo Dolls album's worth of one chord progression? Do we really need another Maroon 5? blech.

Funny thing about Goo Goo Dolls...did you know the lead singer Reznick or whatever doesn't know how to play guitar? He has his guitar tuned to some freaky tuning where he only has to chord the top two strings... but songs are always catchy and end up hits... for better or worse. true story, he said it in an interview...and its blatent watching him live.

yes, so isn't it ironic they are more popular with the radio stations then LIVE? Someones doing something wrong...or not enough label support.

I think the River is a much better single than Better Days or Give a Little Bit. I personally think the Goo's have slipped in quality over the last few years. They don't even tour except for NYE in Vegas. Lucky for them, there label still pushes them strong after their last album barely went gold.

I just hope Epic starts the big push for Live soon......

But that's not even their song! I can't even begin to explain how much it pisses me off when COVERS are considered new songs. I can't speak for Super Tramp, but I think I would be so pissed if some CRAP band like the Goo Goo Dolls covered one of my songs, and it went higher on the charts than my original version. Same for No Doubt and It's My Life. I wanted to punch Gwen in the throat every time I heard that song because for me, she totally ruined it. I LOVED that song right up until the very second I realized NO DOUBT *blech* was covering it. It was ruined for me forever. There's really too much Gwen Stefani in the world as it is. I don't need her fucking up MY favorite songs from the 80s. Someone really needs to grab her by the shoulders, shake her around, bitch slap her, and say "STOP IT!!!!!". I can't wait to hear the nuggets of brilliance that come out of her gross face once she has that kid.

Does commercial success matter? Ultimately the answer is no, at least not to the fan who listens to the music for the beauty (and not the popularity) of it.

That being said, it does matter to the band (after all, they do want to maximize the money they make). And, in some ways, it does matter to the fans as well. As we all know, more commercial popularity means more shows, promotional apearances, magazine articles, and a slew of other things that makes it fun to follow a band. In addition, any band today who does not meet commercial expectations is in danger of being dropped by its record label, and that can be a very scary thing for a veteran rock act considered to be past its peak...

I don't care if their album becomes a commercial success (as long as they can make a living out of it).
But I would mind if they are gonna do crazy things to sell more.

By the way: last week I've finally heard "The river"!!!!!!!!!!

Okay, the lyrics are, I think, not as spiritual as I'm used to hear from them.
But it sounds so HAPPY, that it makes me happy too!!!!!!!!!!
